This question is so similar to what I just went through that I'm almost sure I must have asked this in my sleep.

I'm in pretty much the exact same situation, quasi trust fund, limited funds otherwise, and a therapist that I think would be a good match. Heck, their normal going rate is even $85.

Reading your post I feel like I'm maybe one or two steps ahead of you. I'm 24 now and just starting to pull myself out of the slacker mentality. I attribute two things with helping me start this change.

Just to throw another data point into the mix.

My name is Jason and throughout school it was common enough for teachers and others to call me Josh. This made enough sense as my older brother Josh was a grade ahead of me and we're noticeably similar as brothers. Of course now that I'm out of the homogeneity of K-12, people that have only met me recently will end up calling me Josh. Granted these are at least similar names.

Well, I just looked up my name on a baby name site and apparently Jason is a variant of Joshua. I have no clue if this actually has bearing on why people confuse the two names though.

Perhaps Christian and Francois have some sort of deeper relation that you don't know about?

I suppose this is in line with some of the other anecdotes posted.

Another latecomer, but I'd like to inject my own experience as having recently been a teenager with unbridled internet access in his room.

I feel I would have been better served by having more parental involvement in my life and internet activities. Not so much blocking or monitoring software (as I would have just found a way to circumvent them), just my parents showing more interest in what I was doing and learning about online. I've had problems like you describe in the past when using the most recent version of WinRAR. I'm currently using 3.40 and I've had no problems.

If you're having problems with both extracting and repairing though it may be a larger problem. Like shepd said, check your hardware.

For all my dvd ripping needs, I use Auto Gordian Knot. It installs all the various programs to automatically rip and convert the dvd to the parameters you set. I don't recall it making files that take up a lot of room. For added help, here's a tutorial.
All my rips have come out well with this.

I once had a cashier at a liquor store tell me that there was some sort of pattern as to the winning tickets on a roll. I don't know if there was any truth to that, but it'd be interesting if there were a way to scam them.

My point? freaking' tell her - just be prepared to deal with it like an adult.

From my own experience, this is the way to do it. Especially the whole "dealing with it like an adult" part. If you don't think you can do that then sit on it until you can. Believe me, it's not a good feeling to be freaking out at a good friend.

Lacking multiple computers, I've had to resort to naming hard drives. The computer is called Samus, the system drive is called Mother Brain, and the other two are Ridley and Phantoon. I still need to get a Kraid.

I'm probably addicted to the internet. I spend hours each day reloading MetaFilter or some other page instead of doing things I should be. It interferes with my doing productive things.

I completely agree that it's a replacement for dealing with stressful things. I've let a number of important things slide for too long because I've been pacifying myself with the computer.

My dad would always call me Jase or Space Jase. Still does actually. Oddly enough I get annoyed if anyone but him calls me that.

The thing I'm thinking of was for making an installation cd. It showed how to include applications in it as a way to make it quicker to format/reinstall XP. Or at least that's the benefit I'd like to get out of it.

In my experience, alex_reno has it about right.

I normally see it being used in a sarcastic/mocking way. A sort of cue that what's being said shouldn't be taken as real.
