MeFi post: Get bombed, 67% of the time.
I can see that the discussion has moved away from the specific incident in Istanbul, but I wanted to mention my experience just for the sake of accuracy. I was born and raised in Istanbul and came to the US for college. I am also Jewish. This sort of violence has never happened in Turkey in my lifetime. Neve Shalom was attacked once when I was around 12 and it was terrifying then, too. But my religion has never been a serious issue in the country in my lifetime and my experiences are wonderful... cnn isn't reporting anything new anymore. people have been to stay at home unless they're downtown were they're being evacuated out of workplaces and homes and being asked to move uptown. and yes the subways and tunnels are shut down.

as much as i hate to change the subject from zeldman-bashing, which is really what this is all about, i want to bring up something that people have been nonchalantly mentioning.

to many people, the sites they create are not 'just a web site.' to me, my web site is just that and i write it cause i enjoy writing it. if it disappeared tomorrow no one's life would be majorly affected and most likely neither would mine.

but there are people who've... [more]

MeFi post: Sad news from the makers of Blogger....
in the years i've been using the web, many services have come and gone. some of the disappearances made me sad cause their service provided a convenience that would no longer be available. others i wasn't sure should have been around to begin with.

the unusual thing about blogger is that even though i didn't actually know any of its employees, i can empathize. i think this is the magic of personal webpages and the product that allowed you to create them easily.... [more]

MeFi post: Fairvue presents the Bloggies for 2001....
I see this more as an opportunity to find out about new places. If all those people who've been whining about how 'the same people who always get recognized will again be the winners' would take the time to enter one or two of their favorite-but-not-so-well-known sites, we might get to find some new and neat pages. Maybe Nikolai can also compile a list of all sites that get more than three nominations (categorized) and this way other sites can get recognized, too.

I... [more]

WHY don't we help others who have stories to tell and socially responsible causes to promote to find their voice if we have nothing to talk about but the medium or ourselves?

While I'm not a web designer or a web anything (which I gues would make me an 'ordinary person' in this context) and I am all for helping others in the world, I also recognize that there are many people who choose not to do that and I don't think that it automatically makes them... [more]

webchick,

I knew you were going to pick on that. :)

My apologies, I didn't mean to imply that you said that made them bad people. My point was that while you really care about the Internet's potential as a medium and want to use your knowledge to help others (which is wonderful) there are many people who don't and won't care to. Not that I'm trying to say that people shouldn't try to. I think the fact that you're concerned and choose to be... [more]

The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–1999 list contains some of the greatest books I've read, such as: To Kill a Mockingbird, Flowers for Algernon, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, and Lord Of the Flies. I really don't understand the point of banning books. Then again, Satanic Verses and the movie Midnight Express was banned where I came from...

Dave,

I spoke to a TiVo customer service person about that yesterday and they said that, yes, you might be paying a two-month minimum if you want to actually use the service. Cause it takes up to a month for you to receive the unit but they start charging you for the service right away.

I think there is a distinct difference between being inspired by someone's layout/design/photos and just taking them. Replicating someone's exact design only shows your lack of creativity. Especially since this guy claims he's interested in doing web design, I don't understand why he felt the need to just copy the code instead of trying to think of a way he could create a 'seasonal feel' in his own way.

The thing about copying Van Gogh is that you probably can't. It's... [more]

MeFi post: Dr. Laura fans speak. Jeeeze what 'fruitcakes'....
While I agree that everyone has the right to have and opinion and also the right to express it, I think what makes these people lunatics or fruitcakes is not the opinion itself (with which I personally disagree) but the petty way in which they choose to voice it.

I think most intelligent and open-minded people would be willing to listen (and I mean listen, not agree with) to even an extremist's point of view if he were to articulate it intelligently instead of making... [more]
