MeFi post: Model T Body Modification
That's one thing I believe is missing from modern high-tech rides, this kind of uber-hackability. You take something like a Tin Lizzie, Deux Cheveaux, an air-cooled Bug, Land Rover, Jeep, etc., and the potential exists for anyone with some relatively simple tools and a big enough stash of ingenuity to convert it into almost anything motorised. Try that with your H2s or your Priuses or what have you...

One of my many regrets in life is not buying a co-worker's old zebra striped boogie van. The best part? When it's officially known as a '69 Econoline, it don't need a nickname...

I find it ironic, though, that the Sesame Street version of "1, 2, 3, 4" actually has less counting than the original.

I guarantee you that the sdk is going to create a legion of cheap-ass homebrew nonsense apps just like it does for windows mobile and palm. For every really spiffy awesome app that makes your life easier, there'll be three thousand crappy "english to klingon dictionaries" and horoscope applications coded in 5 minutes by people who don't give a shit.

That's kinda the point, actually. What matters about it--and homebrew on any platform, from... [more]

In a dark basement somewhere, someone is photoshopping a steampunk version of this.

Steampunk? More like bamboopunk--this clearly calls for a tiki to be carved directly into the melon rind.

Nice. Watching the first ten minutes of Part 2 impressed me enough to search out torrents of the programs, so that I can watch them in a format and resolution that doesn't make me bleed from the eyes.

MeFi post: Attacked by shadows
I've heard other people make that same point about SotC, Malor. I never finished the game myself--I gave up on the giant turtle with the geysers--but a couple of the earlier battles, the ones against the bird/pterodactyl and eel/sea serpent creatures, made me question exactly why I was supposed to be killing them. I mean, they never even attack you until provoked. I think that might have been part of the point, though.

You're either at a job that's cushy enough to let you screw around on the Internet, or in a financial situation where you don't have to work (yet have enough cash for a computer and the Internet).

Yes, those are the only possible explanations. Rumors abound of people whose jobs give them down-time while the white collar world is at work, and who can only think of a monday-to-friday... [more]

Charlie Ryan didn't just (re)write "Hot Rod Lincoln", he built it. From lincoln-club.org::
Charlie Ryan is a musician, songwriter and a car guy. In the late 1940s, he purchased a used 1941 Lincoln Zephyr four-door sedan. After a couple of years, he decided to make a hot rod out of it. He removed the Zephyr body, cut two feet off the frame to shorten the wheelbase and dropped a 1930 Ford Model A coupe body on it. At first, the car was painted black with red wheels. Charlie... Cody Matherson looks like he might be your neighbour in southeast Calgary, who's got a kickass Monte Carlo but it's up on blocks on his front lawn, so he just cruises around on a ten-speed, with the handlebars flipped backwards so he can balance a two-four of Pilsner on them.

Have you ever been to southeast Calgary? That really doesn't narrow it down much, dude.

About a year before his death, Kurt Cobain was asked by Mr. The Human Serviette what his favourite thing about Canada was. His reply? "No Taco Bell."

A year later, Taco Bell was gaining a foothold in the Great White North... and Cobain was found dead. Coincidence? You decide.

Well, Wikipedia sez MS DOS 5 came out in '91... which explains the white guy rapping, as that was the height of the Vanilla Ice era.

In a weird way, I like how achingly awful these vids are--maybe because I feel a little weird for liking their current series of (barely) Vista-promoting virals starring Demetri Martin.

Quirky my sweet ass. All those kids in massed produced "vote For Pedro" shirts are the vanguard of individuality now? Wake me when the shuttle lands, please. The so-called bland mainstream people are a hundred times weirder than those trendy conformists without even trying.

What, exactly, do the T-shirts have to do with anything? If this were about the mindset of the audience, you might have a point, but this is about the artistic worth (or... [more]

jonmc: The popularity of those shirts proves nothing except that those shirts are popular. It's not the audience that's being discussed here, dude. I haven't seen "Napoleon Dynamite" either, for all I know it may be the suckiest suck that ever did suck, but if so it's because of what's on the celluloid, not what's on a legion of 18-year-old chests in Cooper Black on a 50/50 polyester/cotton blend.

When I become insanely wealthy, I vow to own a black-on-black-on-black '66 Corvair turbo coupe with "Unsafe at Any Speed" lettered on the decklid in gold leaf. Take that, Nader.

As for cars that belong on this list instead of the 'Vair, how about that horrible, ugly football-on-wheels Lexus RX350? The "R" is for "retch". While I'm at it, the new Toyota FJ Cruiser is an aesthetic abomination as well--I don't know how you could screw up New... [more]

MeFi post: Comic Sans
Think for a moment. Comic Sans MS is not a Sans Serif font. It's something else. It's handwriting. Remember hand-written letters? Wasn't there something beautiful about them, each stroke specifically crafted for that specific word, delivered quickly or slowly, sharply or softly, with intent or in accident...

Comic Sans MS is a human font. It, unlike Verdana, could concievably have been drawn by a human hand, not deeply versed in the art of calligraphy but just

Eh, so what?

Her job is to be decorative, not insightful. Frankly, I've heard plenty of CEOs and politicians and priests spout platitudes just as content-free, as constructed from a string of cliches. Many people's jobs are not to enlighten, but just to look like they're doing something.

It's important to the USA, and also complete sentences, in the nation of the world, put words in correct the order to learn knowledge helping children. God bless America.
