Do I have magnetic superpowers?
Are yours magnetized every time? Do you ask them to try it when yours are NOT magnetized? If yours are only magnetized say, one out of ten times, and you eat with 3 other people, chances are that if you only ask them to test when you've found yours to be magnetized, theirs will rarely be magnetized.

I did it to see if i could, and to play with the jabber libraries for perl. I figured maybe i'd find a use for the account, but didn't. I haven't logged into it in months. Basically if you posted to the live stream during the few hours i was doing that, I am following you.

Burr grinder for home use?
i use a zassenhaus knee mill smiliar to these. I might hesitate to recommend it for someone who's making full pots (tho i use it for that), but for a small french press, they're perfect.

DVD ripping on linux
I'm guessing Mac the Ripper makes an ISO file from a DVD? In k3b, under "copy dvd," theres a checkbox for "only create image."

It...it...flam - flames. Flames, on the side of my car, heaving...breath...insurance.
I think progressive uses the average of kelly bluebook and primark redbook. When I had a to deal with them for a totaled vehicle, they were really great. The only snag was they wanted to deduct because my car didn't have an option that wasn't actually an option on my car, but I argued with them untill they called nissan and confirmed that it wasn't an option. I literally had a check in my hands 3 days after the car was totaled, and one of those days was a sunday.

SWM seeks a simple ultraportable
i have a lenovo x61t, which i love. it's not as small as your examples at 12.1", but it's fast, has gobs of ram, and runs linux perfectly well. If you want smaller, fujitsu has some tiny stuff. No idea how well they run linux, but i'd assume it'd be pretty workable.

Don't be a drip in the drop out bucket
off topic: if it's still below freezing, tie a thread to the end of the icicle and anchor directly below so the drips travel down the line, and it'll quickly form a solid column of ice from your eaves to the ground.

A->B instead of B->A?!?!?
i don't think File Scavenger will do it - "Files can only be restored if the disk areas allocated to the files have not been overwritten by new data." - I expect that if it spent all night syncing the drives, it wrote over ever byte of your data with whatever was on the new drive. Like jrishel says, you're probably screwed, unless possibly you want to spend a lot of money. Even then... i don't know.

Randomize ping speed / size / destination?
declare -a PINGHOSTS=(192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2);
while true;
do ping -s $[$RANDOM/218+50] ${PINGHOSTS[$RANDOM/(32767/${#PINGHOSTS[@]})]} -c 1;
sleep $[($RANDOM/13+500)/1000];
done
seems to work, but i won't be surprised when someone corrects something in there.
Zed_Lopez, smaller sleep intervals can archived in perl with select:
select(undef,undef,undef,0.1); #sleep for 100 milliseconds

My money is doing nothing more than 80% of the time!
Its not "doing nothing" when the market's closed. You're investing in a company, and that company is still doing business and experiencing events that are having an affect on it's value, regardless of your ability to buy or sell.

How can I really play Monkey in the Middle?
i don't think so; picture a dogbone shaped yard, with one end larger than the other. the mower is going to end up somewhere in the large end of the dogbone, but the balance point is going to be somewhere on the skinny part, right?

What is the best sub-compact digital camera du jour
I'm in the panasonic camp now too. After months of research and flip flopping, I decided on the panasonic lumix dmc-lx2. It's possibly a little bigger than what you're looking for, but I'm thrilled with it.
The lumix dmc-fx07 looks very nice too, as jpozadrides mentions above, and it's tiny. One thing he didn't mention: it has a 28mm equiv lens (vs 35 or 38 on most), which doesn't sound like much of a difference but is very nice, and something not found on many... [more]

Which hand is my left one?
I have trouble with left and right.. when i was probably five or so, my mom pointed out a little birthmark on my right side. I'm in my 30s now and still use that to figure out right and left, except when I'm in a car. In a car, its usually no problem. Also, I'm fairly ambidexterous. Not sure if that's related. Holding up my hands to see which makes the letter "L" works fine, but.. I'd have to hold up my hands.

Static electricity and thunderstorm-phobic dogs
I had a dog like this, my vet gave me valium for him. (I think it was valium, it was a few years ago.) I'd give him a tiny tiny dose before a thunderstorm would roll in, he'd still be nervous but wouldn't hide and drool and generally freak out when dosed up. Eventually he didn't really need the valium anymore, except for the first couple storms of the season.

Go for it, manuals are more fun. My daily driver is 20 year old rwd stick shift with no power steering or cup holders, and i sometimes get a coffee on the way to work. I've got an automatic in my driveway that hasn't been used in months.
