I remember him most for his non-fiction The Dreams Our Stuff is Made of, an engaging, gossipy examination of science fiction in 20th century pop culture, including tropes, Scientology, feminism, politics, and more.

MeFi post: The Cock Mightier than the Dong
It's an example of a clbuttic problem resulting from naive design of swear filters. It backfires on words like "title" and "assassinate", which end up sounding more crude after translation.

Anyone make it to the end of the article without falling asleep? Anything interesting in there?

Nah, tl;dr

I enjoyed Simon Baron-Cohen a lot more in Borat.

Though it did take a while for me to realize that when she asks "Are you thirsty?", she's saying "I'm thirsty; please get me a drink, and you know what I like". Not better or worse, just indirect.

50 insights over 50 years would be even more interesting if they were evenly spaced:

1. You can crawl pretty fast when Mommy's back is turned.
2. If you slam the edge of your bowl really hard, your Cheerios go flying.
3. Infant siblings are high-maintenance, home-wrecking attention hogs.
4. If you wash down that bite of peas with a gulp of milk, the taste is less offensive.

True; and there seems to be even a finer distinction. If someone else is watching TV, it's much easier for me to tune out a drama (where the characters are talking to each other) than, say, the news, or Oprah (where they are talking to the viewer).

Everyone has a passing interest in food, but lately there has been this outbreak of reality TV and food TV, with Top Chef, Iron Chef, Hell's Kitchen, Rachael Ray, the Bam Guy, innumerable dessert-making competitions, and now this movie... and the enthralled fascination with all this stuff doesn't always make it from the couch to the kitchen.

"Hapa" is slang for a mixed-race Asian ("hapa this, hapa that"). See link for photos of celebrities (I'm guessing SFW, but only checked a few) and regular people (headshots).

(@ Thorzdad: mixed-race placement seems to be a higher proportion than the general population... if that's right, is it due to more children being placed, or a higher proportion of children being adopted?)

Using the Google Maps API, you can... last time I tried this, it was labor intensive. You add pairs of (lat, long) to an array and the API will draw line segments between them.

I used it here, for a demo "follow the path of original CT route 8" page. The shaded overlay shows the original route. However, you can see where the line... [more]

Reminds me of Bruce Tinsley's Mallard Fillmore, who's said to be a counterweight for Doonesbury, but the symmetry isn't there. Propaganda isn't going to balance out satire.

The Daily Show targets not only the politicians in power (mainly the GOP since '94 and 2000), but TV news itself. If both Jon Stewart and the media were liberally biased, you'd think he'd have nothing to say. But time and time again TDS points out how the media is kowtowing to those in power, not... [more]

One of the sports sites used to offer pennant race graphs... not animated, but still a compelling view on how momentum could shift over a season.

One example I did by hand was AL West, 2001, here (.gif) Seattle did very well overall, but really pulled away from the pack around game 40. The A's show their habit of starting 40-40 and finishing 60-20.

Are there still pennant race graphs out there?

It had me thinking of grains of rice on chessboards.
