MeFi post: The Greatest Sideshow Video Ever Made.
I never saw the entire circus, but the Torture King's act came through Anchorage many years ago and performed at the all-ages club I was working at.

After the show -- which culminated with him swallowing a weight on a string, making a small incision just below his sternum, and pulling the string out through the incision, leading to at least a couple kids fainting -- he went upstairs to the club's coffee bar and ordered a coffee from my friend Chad. When he got it, he... [more]

I read this to my girlfriend. Her response: "No. I think 'Herman.'"

MeFi post: There are no Escalators in Wyoming.
I did a search for wyoming escalator on Flickr, and got exactly one result -- though as the single hit is titled Up the Down Escalator, it appears that once again, we're dealing with a declinator and not a true escalator.

MeFi post: A Portrait of the Intertubes as a Child
I used to be responsible and manually archive my sites every so often. Thanks to that, I'm (proudly?) still serving my site as it stood on Feb. 27th, 1996 (and, of course, it's 'Netscape 2.0 enhanced' and best viewed with the window sized to the width of the graphic bars.).

Also still kicking around: Feb. 14th 1997 (pretty slick by '97 standards, though somewhat broken in today's browsers) and March 30 1998, most notable for the sub-site I had for Gig's Music Theater, an... [more]

MeFi post: I Waterboard!
> We don't steal, cheat, lie…as a matter of national security policy.

Quote lightly edited because yeah, I'd be surprised to see adultery as a means for national security (you never know these days, though). The first three, though -- I'd be surprised if those _weren't_ regularly used, on multiple levels both within our government and while relating to other governments, in the name of 'national security'.

Not that that weighs directly on the... [more]

MeFi post: Flickr Tour of Seattle Underground
And suddenly I understand why my shot of the Teller's Cage has had so many views. Heh. Thanks for the link!

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Underground tour. I tend to go on it about once a year, whenever I find someone who hasn't gone on the tour yet. To me, it's a fun and pleasantly irreverent look at some of the odder parts of Seattle history, and I've not yet gotten quite the same collection of information twice. The basics are the same, sure, but each tour guide... [more]

I'm not even a tea drinker, but my self-proclaimed tea-snob girlfriend took one look and declared it very nifty, and something she'd like to have. Perhaps a good Xmas present later on (good thing she's not a MeFi reader...).

MeFi post: Why should dolphins get all the fun?
Going waaaay back to the beginning of this thread...

mathowie: There was a story recently about how well the newspaper handled it -- they were very delicate about it and the small town and the guy's neighbors praised how well the Seattle paper treated everyone with respect involved.

My high school German teacher named her first child, a daughter, 9. Not "nine" -- 9. Her third child, a boy, had the middle name of 7 -- again, the numeral -- only he was very specific about how it was to be spelled: it was the German 7-with-the-crossbar. If the crossbar wasn't there,... [more]

And if that's the case, perhaps there are other alterations to the rest of the set.

Semi-on topic (as far as the commercialization of Christianity goes, that is): there's a great weblog called They Will Know Us By Our T-Shirts that addresses much of the silliness inherent in Christian retail.

MeFi post: Fool's World Map
Mental geography can be a wonderfully screwball thing at times.

I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, where if you're bored and want to go to another decent sized city to do something, your best bet is Fairbanks — a good six to eight hours drive north (at the speed limit, many people do it in far less time) depending on traffic, weather, and how much of the highway is under construction. We'd do that on weekends when we were bored. Sudden impulses leading to pointless drives... [more]

I ran into this a few weeks ago when I had to buy ink for my printer and realized that it's practically cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy ink refills. Obnoxious.
