MeFi post: Fannie and Freddie under conservatorship.
...Ron Paul, anyone?

Sure! I don't know exactly what I'll do with a crazy old racist, but I'm sure I can put him to work sweeping the steps or yelling at the fleet-footed negros. Freecycle is so great.

MeFi post: Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate
What Michelle Malkin had to say about Obama's statement.

While I'm sure a woman who thinks that sending American citizens to internment camps based solely on their ethnicity is a beacon of rational thought, I'm not really sure what additional insights being a complete nutcase gives her into this strange soap opera of a national election.

You've also never heard of the Tibetan Inquisition or the Tibetan Crusades or Tibetan anti-semitism (not accusing current Catholics of any of these - merely pointing at history).

Some see it a little differently.

MeFi post: WashPost on graphic novels
I have nothing against comics/graphic novels in their own right, but text will always be a more nuanced form for transmitting information than pictures, no matter how they're packaged or formatted.

I don't think that's true at all. Joe Sacco's fantastic Safe Area Gorazde is a perfect example. Yes, he could have written a Big Block O' Text book about it, but by adding in the visuals, he's able to connect the reader even further to what is going on.... [more]

MeTa post: Amazed at no FPP on McCain's epic gaff
I think the suggestion that John McCain, a former naval aviator and prisoner of war, might not be able to remember to put on his pants is, frankly, quite outrageous.

MeFi post: Pastor Rick's Test
Is there a transcript available? I think people should keep their religious fantasies to themselves, but I'm curious how well John McCain managed to con people into thinking that he believes in anything other than money and John McCain.

MeFi post: Aw, and I'm turning 21 in three months!
My favorite part, from another article on the topic:

"It gives me great pause to think of sending thousands of students onto a campus where the person who is most accountable doesn't seem to be devoted to ensuring their health and safety," [Executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving for Maryland and Delaware, Caroline] Cash said.

Why yes, that makes perfect sense.

Ask post: How to get temporary broadband as a foreigner in Germany?
I can fourth the Alice recommendation (they're the only provider I've found that doesn't require a contract and I've not really had any problems with them so far), but with two caveats:

1) They will want a German bank account to deduct the monthly payment from. In order to get a German bank account, you will likely need to have a residency registration (unless you can maybe swing something with Citibank), which in turn means a whole painful trip through German... [more]

Ask post: Custom made pens
I would, actually. I've always wanted a pen that looked like one of those old 50s sci-fi rocket ships. Maybe with a nice stand that looks like an asteroid space war base. And little dudes in space war costumes I could position around it. That'd be awesome but the invisible guiding hand of the free market doesn't want to give it to me because the invisble guiding hand is a fucking jerk who only likes rich people.

MeFi post: Pourquoi tant de haine ?
it is disheartening to follow a blog and enjoy it for months, and then one day fall on the most basic french bashing there is as the post of the day

I've read plenty of stupid French surrender jokes, and while it does act as a good flag letting me know the person making the joke is an idiot, I think you're missing the motivation behind it. The stereotypical American gets 2 weeks of vacation a year, spends a great deal of their waking moments working,... [more]

Ask post: How can I get Wireless internet when i need it
If you purchase a wireless repeater (Linksys, for example, makes one), you can possibly plug it in in your brothers room to increase the signal enough so that you, too, can use the unencrypted network, but they don't always work so well depending on the materials the house is made out of. If I were in your shoes, I'd just get a cellular data plan and a card to connect the laptop to it.... [more]

Yeah, you're going to be disappointed if you set out hoping to recreate the dairy experience, but I think several types of soy yogurt out there taste pretty good, and you can definitely get big tubs of it plain to add fruit to as you like.

Can I make tofu tapioca? Tofu pudding?

I certainly don't speak for butterstick, but I think he or or she is talking about the attempts, mentioned at the end of the article, of the Nixon campaign to "mimic Tuck's pranks". Which resulted in:

3 days in Slovakia is a good option. Bratislava is conveniently a short train ride away from Vienna (and a bit of a longer ride from Prague, but it's still in the neighbourhood), and you can easily spend three days there if you don't feel like exploring the rest of the country.

I'll just stay out of that thread and let them work it out like the adults they are. MeTa post: Musings
I've been operating under the assumption that "muse" is just one of those boxes you tick because sitting down and thinking about the specifics of your relationship as contacts on an internet website is really too much effort so labelling a perfect stranger as your "sweetheart crush muse date" is perfectly OK even if you aren't fucking them.
posted to MetaTalk by cmonkey at 6:54 PM on July 21, 2008
I think if you've even made it to the "contacts" page, you've already jumped the "too much effort" shark and lost claim to any sort of cool, distanced perspective on the internet.

I'd say there's a pretty big canyon between "being interested in keeping up with what people you think are neat are saying because you enjoy reading their perspectives" and "feeling awkward because marking them as a muse might convey romantic interest".

Ask post: Your thoughts on upcoming Amsterdam visit, pls?
I can't remember where else I've stayed, but on my last trip to Amsterdam I stayed at the Hotel Linda. It was cheap and shabby, and the stairs are a nightmare, but there's free wireless and I didn't worry about my laptop getting stolen when I left it in the room.

Personally, I think two days in Amsterdam is enough, and the "not to be missed" stuff is in other parts of the Netherlands.

MeFi post: Tony Snow, 1955-2008
Some say that Abraham Lincoln was a hero, others point to Harriet Tubman, Martin Luthor King, Geronimo, Patrick Henry and George Washington. But Tony Snow proved himself to be a true American hero in a class above all of them. A man who believed that telling the truth, the whole truth, painful though it may be for the public to hear, was the most important part of being the public spokesman for what might be the most transparent and law-abiding government in the history of North America.
