Centenarian Celebrity!
I hate the sound of Frank Sinatra's voice. I can't fucking stand Ingmar Bergman movies. Kafka is boring. Mozart was a no talent pervert. John Ford sucks. Shirley MacLaine is a mad old woman. Orson Welles was an alcoholic show-off. I don't give two shits about Bob Hope.
America at its worst.

Wow. Are you people saying Americans are eager to find fault with anything to do with Bill Gates and Microsoft and Windows, as they secretly hate or envy them; but will go to great lengths to cover up the faults of Steve Jobs and Apple and OSX?
That is so against my impression of American consumers! Why would anonymous readers of Consumer Reports cover up for their Macs' faults? It's neurotic!

Then I read this comment of substrate's in my thread about a destructive rabbit. Something clicked. So I looked into what the web had to offer on this most enchanting of all breeds. And woe was me!
I live in an apartment; have one very large, fat, stupid, pathologically lazy and placid black Persian cat; no children; a lovely wife who likes everything tidy and ship-shape and an abiding desire to get an energetic, intelligent, loyal and tenacious dog. I.e. Nothing... [more]

Sightings of Famous People
In the Gambrinus restaurant in Lisbon, I once saw Sean Connery drink nothing but water all through a big celebration dinner for "The Russia House" cast. He spoke in a very loud voice about golf and fishing. Nobody paid the slightest attention. What a tedious man! And, to make things worse, Michelle Pfeiffer, who I was secretly stalking, had left before I arrived at the restaurant, even before the meal began... What a let-down!

Gough! What about British placenames, shoepal? They're truly inscrutable. Here are some I got from Bill Bryson's book Mother Tongue:
Barnoldswick - pronounced Barlick.
Worcester, Leicester, Chichester - Wooster, Lester, Chester.
Keighley - Keethley.
Wyardisbury - Razebry.
Flawith - Floyth.
Cholmondeston - Chumson.
Wymondham - Windum.
Saint John - Sinjun.

In Okeford Fitzpaine they actually changed the names round, just in case an enlightened foreigner presumed to get it right. You can't get more "local", a la "League of Gentlemen, than this. Damn them.

Bill Bryson also lists some names that, he claims, most Americans think they know how to pronounce but thay are actually pronounced differently by the locals. I'll leave out the local pronunciations to further the confusion:
Boise, Idaho; Gettysburg, Pennsylvabia; Pierre, South Dakota; Quincy, Massachusetts; Monticello, Virginia; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Biloxi, Mississippi; Yakima, Washington; St Ignace, Michigan; Concord, Massachusetts and New Hampshire; Arkansas... [more]

Why is c-o-m-b pronounced comb, and b-o-m-b is bomb?
Exactly, wrench! Is it any wonder we foreigners can't cope? Rexgregbr: Bravo! Bravura performance, in fact. I'm Argentinian, I've lived in Portugal for over twenty years and I still can't speak/pronounce the exclusionist lingo. But when I visit Buenos Aires, my old friends can't understand me either. "Johnny PayCheck, who died on Wednesday aged 64, was a honky-tonk country singer with a reputation for hard-drinking, violence and general wild behaviour; he recorded 70 albums and had more than two dozen hit singles, although he was best known for his cover of David Allan Coe's blue-collar anthem Take This Job and Shove It (1977).

Brigitte Boisselier, Raelians, appearance and credibility
Good points, 4easypayments and biscotti. I posted this because almost all the comments I heard on the cloning story (whether from men or women) were alarmingly predicated on Dr. Boisselier's appearance. And I found myself going along with them. Surely this can't be right?

School lunches; bad food
I don't. I love America. And I like real American food very much. But school lunch menus (a lot online) seem to come from nowhere. I realize they're very cheap but there's nothing fresh, nothing nutritious, nothing that doesn't depend on sauces. Also, for a foreigner (Argentinian) it's strange that the meals are all individual - each kid gets his taco or burger - and that's there's no communal cooking, as is the norm of school lunches everywhere in the world. All the food seems to be pre-made... [more]

Oops, no - I meant cooking for a community; not the community cooking. You know, making big quantities of a nice stew, a side of beef, a savoury rice, bouillabaisse.
As for pictures are normally made to look better than the real thing, I had to laugh when I saw what the school suggests we do with the photographs.

The link I gave to Michael Jackson's website also provides a beer search, which is probably more complete than the Oxford one, but not as systematic. Isn't porn about sex? This isn't about sex. Foot fetishists may find Manolo Blahnik advertisements highly arousing - but it doesn't make them porn.
The danger is if everything which may arouse a small minority of people is deemed "porn" then you risk there being no distinction between child porn (children engaging in sexual acts) and photographs of... [more]
