Ask post: BYOChartreuse
Call ahead. Some places'll allow liquor and will charge you a fee for a 'setup': a glass of mixer & ice. Some places charge outrageous bullshit wine 'corking' and beer bottle opening fees. Some don't. Some don't allow any hard booze at all. It varies from one block to the next in most dry-ish areas. Fun game: bring the rankest wino-approved booze you can find (think:MD 20/20, T-Bird, Steel Reserve, any bottom-shelf tequila with a picture of Pancho Villa pasted on it), then let the... [more]

Ask post: Please help me save someone from dehydration...
Hi well-wishers - thanks for all of the support and kind words. Alive and hydrated. I'm doing a lot better, and the ER wasn't all that bad this time.

So very tired. I'm going to go nap it up.

One semi-related note: I received a job offer today with a great company, which means insurance is just around the bend. Hurray me.

Wow - you guys've pointed me towards some really interesting stuff. I'd never heard the term 'flexitarian' before now and it fits me like a well-tailored suit, though the word itself kind of makes me wince.

Ask post: What's my best option for finding a cheap-as-dirt computer in the Dallas area?
If your job requires you to do PC work from home they really should be supplying the computer. I think the first thing you should do is to ask the boss about supplying a suitable computer.

I guess I should've mentioned we're a restaurant. We've only been open for 3 months, and while business has been amazing (the lines & wait times we experience are every restaurateur's dream, especially for a new establishment) we're... [more]

Ask post: What is the best paid dating website with ACTUAL results?
Thirding Match. I haven't used it personally, but someone close to me is an employee there and I get to hear about and see success story after success story, including ones involving my friends.

Eharmony has a strict 'morals' clause and does not allow same sex couples, which should be reason enough to stay far far away from them.

Ask post: A bottle of vodka?
A bottle of decent ($20 & up - I suggest Tito's, if you can get it) vodka that you've infused yourself with one of his favorite flavors would make a pretty great gift.

Oh. I see you're in Australia. Probably not much Tito's down there.

Nauseous misused for nauseated. Nauseous means that you make someone else want to throw up, not that you feel sick yourself. Nauseated means that you feel sick.

Ask post: What do do in Green Bay WI?
Thirding the Door County suggestion. My family is from the area and I have many great childhood memories of exploring DC's beautiful forests and shorelines. You could drive up to Washington Island, take the ferry to the island, and have a great outdoors time.

I'm strapped for time right now, but I'll try to drop by this thread again later with more specific destinations.... [more]

Ask post: Where can I find an original Polish movie poster for "Dawn of the Dead" (1978)?
I just attended a similar festival in Dallas, complete with 'Night', 'Dawn', 'Day', 'Land', and 'Diary' stars and crews. There were several dealers present that specialized in original overseas posters, and I know I saw at least one Polish 'Dawn' poster for sale. It wasn't cheap.

I'd suggest contacting the folks putting together the fest you're attending to see if they can point you towards dealers, and if all else fails, maybe you can find something when you're there.

Ask post: So what is he on?
From the information you've given, it's impossible to tell exactly what he's using. There's not a lot of pills that inject cleanly, however, and the most common of those is Oxycontin.

When you think he's high, look at his eyes. Do his pupils 'pin' (get really small) or do they dilate? If they pin, it's a downer like Oxy and if they dilate then it's an upper like speed or coke.

I strongly suggest that you talk to a professional... [more]

...and the movie SUPERBAD. I have NEVER known anyone (regardless of ethnicity or origin) to NOT like that movie.

I'm sorry - I just noticed this suggestion. A copy of Superbad? An American DVD will not play in a standard British player and besides, I'm fairly certain that it's been released in Europe.

Ask post: Vegetarian Soul Food
On of the many masks I wear is that of a cook at the only (non-Asian) vegan restaurant & bakery in Dallas.

With a lot of meats used in soul food, more flavor comes from the seasonings instead of the meat. Liquid smoke, which is vegan, works wonders in making proteins taste more meat-like. It's very easy to overuse, though - I add it to dishes one or two drops at a time to taste. Worcester sauce works along the same lines, but is more subtle than liquid smoke.... [more]

Ask post: pawn shop questions
Lastly, don't think of it as a loan. Unless you're back in a few hours, your stuff may get sold.

Methinks you don't know quite how pawn shops work. They're regulated and will not just resell your stuff if you've taken out a loan on it.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Item at 2:25 PM on February 14, 2008
I see what you mean, but a pawn shop's not going to conduct an exchange without asking if you want a loan or if you want to sell the item. I've hocked my share of stuff over the years, and have never had a shop not ask me. Usually, a shop'll give you more money on a loan than if they're buying it from you.

Ask post: What's the thinnest, least "intrusive" condom on the market?
I dated a girl with a latex allergy and we used Durex Avantis pretty much exclusively. During the year we were together, we had two of them rip on us, resulting in one morning after pill and a good deal of worrying. We kept using them because we wanted to keep fucking &, IIRC, they were the only readily available non-latex, non-animal (yuck) condoms on the market at the time. They are definitely the closest thing to nothing at all - they're thin as hell and as someone mentioned upthread,... [more]

I kind of doubt there's enough hash going around any US city these days to justify a delivery service - it's a rare sight pretty much everywhere. A high-end pot delivery service would be much more realistic.

Herradura? Boring. You can get it at pretty much any liquor store in the states.

I love tequila - it's my favorite liquor for a variety of reasons. When I'm in Mexico, I always like to try to get a different kind, something I've never had before. I usually look over the store's stock and talk to the employees about what they recommend in a particular variety of tequila. I like to pick up a bottle that there's not a chance in hell I'll be finding down at the local... [more]

Next time your sibling's birthday rolls around, hire a professional house cleaner as a gift. Pay for the service up front. Sibling will probably be embarrassed as to the amount of mess and won't want a stranger coming in, so don't ask beforehand if he/she wants it - just do it.

I'm a part-time cook at a vegan diner. I could easily tell you 20 great & easy things to make, but it's late & I'm fairly tipsy, so I'll give you one: vegan quiche. I didn't create this dish nor do we serve it where I work, but it's easy as hell and always a crown-pleaser. I stole this particular version of the recipe from one of those obvious vegan food websites, though I originally got it from a cookbook - I forget which one. The following looks just about right and is how I make... [more]

I dealt with a similar problem years ago (my roommate's girlfriend was a 'screamer' in bed) by placing a heavy bookcase in front of the door. You didn't mention if you have to use your door; we didn't, and this method worked really well. Eventually, his girlfriend started sleeping with our other roommate and the noise moved completely to the other side of the house.
