Account Closing Protocol
I know of only one instance where Matt did a full wipe, and that involved a user who had already irreparably broken relations with the site in a really bad faith manner and then proceeded to, yes, threaten to sue.
Ahh, Foetry Guy, a prince among... not men, exactly. Slugs? Are slugs known to be monarchical?

I, Item, would like to be able to view deleted Ask Metafilter threads. I don't see what the harm will be, as long as a minor hoop has to be jumped through to view them ala lofi.mefi.
Okay.

I just figured out how to view deleted AskMe threads, though (you have to include the / at the end of the address! Wowza!), so all is right in my Mefi world at the moment.
Good night.

Drinks at Trader Vic's Dallas?
You've picked a bad night for Unicorn on the cob & I - Negativland is playing their first ever Dallas show that evening. If you're planning on sticking around TV's past 11:00, we could swing on by after getting our minds screwed with by Contra Costa's finest.

context is for quitters
Is 'labored' American for 'laboured'? Because the built-in spellchecker in my international version of Firefox refuses to recognize 'laboured', yet I swear I once heard it uttered on an episode of 'Are You Being Served'.

Lets not derail obit threads
I guess this would be as good of a point as any to mention that I'm not even a very big Bill Hicks fan. I just hate admen.
Seriously, jessamyn, if you felt that was such a dickish move, I'm wondering why the comment was left intact. I wouldn't have complained if you'd axed it.

As you probably should have. That'll learn you to step away from your duties. I don't make it a habit of commenting in obit threads unless the dead person is either a influence on me or a relative. I regretted the comment as soon as I made it, but the damage was obviously already done. If you guys had implemented the oft requested, timed self edit feature, I would have definitely deleted the quote.
Could I suggest an autobanning of anyone that capitalizes my name?... [more]

Sans quoi?
Doogie Howser went to med school early and still, he managed to figure out stuff like how to rent an apartment and date.
Doogie Howser lived at home with his parents, who may or may not have been stalking him. Also, dating as a homosexual teenaged doctor was probably a complicated mess.

jessamyn, cortex: By u.n. owen's own admission, innocentBystander doesn't use his account anymore - she does. I'm kind of confused as to why his account's still active. Is u.n. owen really deserving of the benefit of the doubt that she won't use IB's account?

I also really wish relationship questions, which are by their very nature unanswerable except through anecdote and handwavery (which may make us feel nice and warm and squishy inside, I know, but still), were deleted on sight. I really do.
I'll never understand the hate for that type of questions - there's definitely been some decent advice tossed around in relationship-related threads. Yeah, a lot of time the best answers are either... [more]

I am a wearer of a mustache that I do not consider to be ironic in any way, shape, or form. They look like shit on some guys, but mine is hot as hell - ask Unicorn on the cob. I did wait until I was nearly thirty to grow my first one, however, as I do feel that a mustache should be earned with life experience. Most guys under 30 that grow them look like they're trying too hard, are trying to prove something, or are funny and ironic. Not me.... [more]
