All we are saying is give meat a chance.

After 13 years of vegetarianism - my entire adult life - I've decided to start eating meat. Looking for advice in the form of books, websites, and personal anecdotes.

Dan Treacy and his band Television Personalities have had a long and storied history. Here's a nice little documentary (part one, two, three, four) on 'em.

I, Item, would like to be able to view deleted Ask Metafilter threads. I don't see what the harm will be, as long as a minor hoop has to be jumped through to view them ala lofi.mefi.

I'm beguiled by deleted threads and have a hunch others are as well. Any chance of getting a version of lofi for Ask?

Apparently, you can now download music on the internet.

Shareminer is a clownsuit engine that searches for files upped to Rapidshare, Megaupload, SendSpace, ZShare, and other similar one click hosts. A great tool for locating full, rare, and out of print albums.

Wasn't there a new podcast in the works as recently as a few weeks back? If you're still in need of questions & commentary from semi-reliable users, that I'd like to suggest acting now. I am readily contactable in this crazy future age. There will be no difficulty tracking me down, so that to you This Moment in Time is as close as ANYONE can get to the absolute perfect combinations of words, sighs, jokes, and groans that make up the whole of a "Classic Podcast. Soft Focus: Interviews with some damn fine and/or interesting musicians

For the last year, the Vice TV program Soft Focus has presented an assortment of "discussions about art, culture, politics, personal history, personal feelings, fashion, and the like" with a series of noteworthy musicians. Host Ian Svenonius manages to wrangle dialogue with of some of the music world's most colorful and idiosyncratic characters: The Fall's Mark E. Smith, My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, The Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, Crass' Penny Rimbaud, Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV's Genesis P. Orridge, Cat Power's Chan Marshall, Thee Headcoats' Billy Childish, The Specials' Terry Hall, Andrew WK, Fugazi's Ian Mackaye, and Palace/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's Will Oldham.

"She gave me two choices, and five days to decide. Either Britta would leave Luna or I would pack my things and move out."

Dean Wareham (of the bands Galaxie 500 and Luna) writes openly about his affair with Luna's bassist, Britta Phillips (best know in some circles as Jem from Jem and the Holograms).

The unreleased 1998 documentary "Frat House"

In 1997, Todd Phillips and Andrew Gurland created a film documenting the savagely brutal hazing rituals that take place during Hell Week at U.S. college fraternities. Frat House was completed and won the Grand Jury Prize for documentaries at 1998's Sundance Film Festival, an award that was later rescinded. HBO was slated to air it later that year, but pulled it for reasons that remain debatable to this day. It has never seen an official release.

What am I allergic to? I have reactions from the following: bean sprouts, kiwi, bananas, pecans, and lots and lots of raw vegetables such as carrots and raw snap pea pods, though I can eat them cooked with no problem.

Getting across the border to the land of the Bandito with nary a passport...

I want to make a daytrip into Matamoras, Mexico in about a month. I've done this several times in the past (mostly to Neuvo Laredo) but right now I do not have a passport. Has the North American 'passport-only' travel rule taken into effect yet, or does it kick in January 1st like my father says?

Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

"Since bursting onto the scene in 1967, Leonard Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960's. In January, 2005, Lian Lunson traveled to Sydney to film the historic "Came So Far For Beauty" show, a tribute to Cohen at the Sydney Opera House organized by famed music producer Hal Willner. And in a series of candid interviews, Cohen himself reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity, using his own artwork, poetry, and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colorful past and his creative process."

Slumber party in a snaunted snous.

Kevin Blechdom is a girl. Along with Blevin Blectum, she was once 1/2 of the duo Blectum from Blechdom (R.I.P.). Kevin is now a solo artist (as is Blevin) living in Germany. Her website is chock full of fun and embarrassing things, such as dirty comics, her homemade patches for MAX/MSP (an amazing virtual synth program), the Blectionary (in case you need help deciphering her world), and four songs from the hit Broadway and theatrical musical 'Annie' as performed by a (hopefully) preteen Kevin. Complete table of contents here. (note: some links may be NSFW. Please be careful.)

Why did a good whack fix my (assumed) broken hard drive?

So I thought for certain the hard drive on my old desktop G4 was dead. Upon startup, I was getting the "whirr CLICK whirr CLICK whirr CLICK whirr CLICK" sound, followed by the flashing question mark on my screen. Out of frustration, I gave the HD the ol' Fonzie: I whacked it good three or four times. I am now typing this on said computer. What happened?

What to do w/ a bitchin' fast internet connection.

My new apartment in New York City came equipped with a built-in ethernet internet connection. So far, I've maxed out at just over 1 meg a second, though that's only happened a few times. Besides downloading media via bittorrent and p2p, what recreational net activities should I take advantage of? What's the best way that I can 'speed test' my top d/l speed? Also, any guesses on what type of connection I likely have? T1? T3? How would I find this out without bothering my landlord?

There's a 25200, 25199, 25198, and 25197, but no 25196, 25195, 25194, 25193, or 25192. There's a user 25191, but no 25190 or 25189. There does happen to exist a 25188 and that's as far as I'm gonna go. I can only hope you've gotten the point by now, but if not: What's with the missing users?
