Recommended auto mechanic near Arlington, MA

Do you have a mechanic to recommend near Arlington, MA? My beloved old Volvo has a bunch of little issues that need addressing. I'm in Arlington Heights, but I will go a bit out of my way if anyone has someone reliable, reasonable and fairly timely to recommend.

Where can I buy Miffy/Nijntje stuff?

Where can I purchase baby clothing featuring Miffy (Nijntje)? I am near Boston, Massachusetts in the United States of America, and have access to the Internet. I will also probably travel to Montreal before I need the clothing, in case there is a shop there that will best satisfy my Miffy needs

Is Wang's name supposed to be pronounced "Wong"?

Can anyone familiar with Taiwanese culture or Mandarin tell me if the Yankees' PR people changed the pronunciation of Chien Ming Wang's surname to "Wong" to prevent penis jokes? Or is it really some fluke of transliteration?

Where can I buy dulse in greater Boston? I'm aware of the Internet ordering sources, but is there someplace I can visit today or tomorrow and just buy it?

does this soviet poster exist?

I have heard several reference to a Soviet propaganda poster that I can't find. Maybe it's a hoax, perhaps you've seen it. You might even know where I can view it.

Someone has made a variant of my "lost cat" poster for their own cat (I think). Can someone help me sort out what's going on here?

Does a 33-year-old in good health need a daily aspirin?

Do I need a second medical opinion regarding an aspirin regimen? I can't figure out if this is minor or something I should look into.

need big pix Stalin pls

Does anyone know where I can find a rather big photo of Josef Stalin online? I'm making an iron-on transfer that will go on a babie's onesie, so it needs to print out at least 4 inches (10cm) wide at 300 dpi. Google image search ain't cuttin' it, but it must be out there.

What's the best packie in the Boston area?

I have lived here for almost all of my adult life and don't know this-- What is the best package store in the Boston area for beer? I want something like Beers of the World outside Rochester, NY and I can't find it: beers from all over the world, and regional beers from the US. I know of some decent places, but nothing that makes me feel like I have just entered Mecca. Lets try to keep it in the 495 Loop, but I will drive further than that if the place sounds really fantastic. Baseball season is here and summer is coming so I am looking forward to some nice beer.

Welshman in GTA3?

Can someone confirm that there's a pedestrian in the game "Grand Theft Auto 3" with a welsh accent who says something to the effect of "Hey! Where are you going?" (emphasis on the "you".) An acquaintance is accusing me of fabricating the story and I don't have a copy of the game handy. I'm know I heard it on the middle island.

Mac video encoding

I ripped a DVD with Mac The Ripper. I have a collection of IFO and VOB files on my hard drive. I want to get a movie file that I can then import into iMovie to cut up. What program do I need and what file type should I shoot for?

What are the best Actionscript courses in Boston?

Work is paying for a Flash Actionscript class. What are the best ones available in or around Boston, Massachusetts USA? I am Straight Outta Newton and work in Allston, so I would like something in those areas, but I am willing to go anywhere in Metro Boston/city if the course is very good.

How do gay rest stops get that way?

How do rest stops along US highways become liason places for homosexuals? I remember a rest stop near my hometown being notorious when I was a child before anyone could somehow blame the Internet.

rejection hurts my mp3s

I have an iRiver h110. Some of my mp3s files behave normally in winamp and Windows Media 10, but are seemingly rejected by the H110 when I try to add them (error message from WMP is something like "may be wrong file type" but they're mp3s, which are supported). I thought that maybe it was corrupt tags and I tried rewriting them, but to no avail.

Why won't my machine post?

I just put together a pc from new parts. It won't post-- fans turn on, but that's it. No video signal, no power light, no beeps, cd trays won't open. Power supply is 400w and tested in another machine. What should my next steps be?

WWJPlay? (The "J" is for "Jack")

I have been reading Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, and I like it a lot. Now I want to play video games set in the era (or thereabouts). Are there any good ones that simulate the Napoleonic Wars or other European and Colonial wars of the general period? Or that have better sailing ship naval battles than the new Pirates!? I liked that a lot at first, but it's too simple and repetitive for me. I have modern computers running windows, OSX, and Linux and a PS2.

what non-roots reggae do you enjoy?

I have come to be interested in classic reggae (in a suburban, lame-o, non-stoner fashion). Whose work should I look for? I generally prefer secular (not roots) songs (like most of The Maytals's songs) to religious stuff (like Junior Murvin's). Who else should I look into? Don't be afraid to be obvious, because I've covered about half of the artists that I am familiar with in the above comparison.

Zoo story.

I am in Philadelphia. My wife and I would like to travel from Reading Terminal Market to the zoo by public transportation. How do we best do it? Also, we would like to get to Citizens Bank Park via public transport today. Is this possible? The web site has a lot of information about parking but nothing about getting there by public transport.

My old volvo doesn't blow!

My 1994 Volvo 940 wagon seems to have minor, intermittent electrical problems. The cruise control went a few months ago. The illumination on the transmission indicator went for a while and now it's back. The sunroof was a bit testy for a few days. Now the blower for the climate control is out. What's going on, you think? This last one's a pisser, and it might be fixed with a fuse, but it's been too cold and wet to try. But something sinister is going on even if I just need a fuse.

Can I suffer through a fever and expect to get better sooner?

If a fever is the human body's response to pathogens, does taking medicine to bring down one's fever increase recovery time? If this is true, is it true of all medicines that treat cold/flu symptoms?

best carwash in metro boston

I want personal recommendations for carwashes in Boston/Metro West. I like the kind where I put money in and get to soap up my car myself. But I will consider other kinds as long as you tell me that they are very effective. (I have been dissatisfied with conveyor/brushless carwashes in the past and I hate to waste money.)

Is my vet gouging me?

1. Am I wrong to think that $110.00 is too much to pay the vet for a 10-minute appointment to look at my cat's eye and hand me a 3.5 gram tube of erythromycin ointment? 2. If the answer to 1 is "yes," can you recommend a good vet near Newton Upper Falls, MA, USA? 3. What's the etiquette for changing vets when you think that your vet is more than competent but you don't want to pay his prices anymore?

PVR/video card question

For a friend who is also doing a PVR project with an old machine:
I have a home made PC with an XGI Volari V3 128 mgb and a Magnavox (27MT3305/17) and I am trying to connect them through S-Video. The TV shows nothing but rolling grayscale ghosts of my desktop. I cannot find any means of configuring the video card to s-video, so I assume this is automatic.

QuarkXclusive help

QuarkXclusive (variable data publishing)-- does anyone know of a good tutorial or guide? The offical documentation is longer than Ulysses and harder to understand. Alternately, does anyone know a different extension that does similar tasks but is easier to master/not linked to HP stuff? Or an InDesign plugin that is similar?

get the ink moving

I have an Epson CX5200 multipurpose printer. It needed ink cartridges, so it sat idle for a while. Now I need to use it and the color of the ink catridge that I replaced (yellow) is only appearing in thin bands.
I've tried cleaning the jets, printing page after page of a 75% Y block from Illustrator and so far no change. Anyone have any fantastic tips?

black box in OSX

Using Mac OSX. I'm getting an annoying black outline around random stuff in the GUI-- like it was highlighting something, but it seems random and I can't control it. For instance, it's around the entry field of "short title for your question" as I'm typing this. It shows up around the "back" button of the file browser if the browser is active. And most annoyingly, it shows up as a thinnish column in QuarkXpress that is the height of the display. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

We are considering buying Martinique Yellow dinnerware from Crate and Barrel. Some friends told us that they were less than impressed with the durability of Crate and Barrel plates. car accident insurance advice

My girlfriend was rear-ended a few days ago and the rear of her car is damaged. It's still very driveable, but she has to do a ton of little things like meet with the adjuster, get estimates for repairs, etc. The insurance company of the guy who hit her has been decently accomodating so far, but I'm wondering if she's eligible for compensation for the time it will take to comply with their procedures? And how do we go about asking for that if indeed she is?
