"You must have shot an awful lot of Legos sir."
The Italian Job trailer, done in Legos. It's amateurish and it's YouTube, but it's only 50 seconds and it's really charming if you're a fan of the movie. There's a serialized version of the whole movie (
part 1 and
part 2). Part 2 is much better because it has the heist and the aftermath. Lorna, Big William and Camp Freddie are miscast, but otherwise it's pretty good.

Hobby religion considers major change.
The Church of England is considering a motion to dump its patron saint,
St. George, noted for slaying dragons and being a fictional character. You see, he might be offensive to muslims. Next up, "Should 'Jerusalem' be abandoned for 'Peace Train'?"

Pro-prostitution blog.
So you've seen the careful, rational and spell-checked arguments for the decriminalization of prostitution. Now read this instead. And don't forget, the author took time out
on christmas eve to tell you what it's like in a central american cathouse.

Remember Surge?
It was a Mountain Dew knockoff from the Super Wicked Radical days of the mid 90's. Reflecting the times, Surge was the color of radiator coolant and as thick as labrador drool. Inexplicably, it failed (except in
Norway and also may have been the inspiration for
this). The site is a magnificent document of true love for a dead product (and the opposite of Pepsi Blue on so many levels.)

December seventh, nineteen forty one.
64 Years ago today, 2,471 people were killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In response, one of our greatest leaders made one of his greatest speeches. And you can listen to it here.

The Skeldale Boys.
Like the works of
James Herriot? Would you like them better if some failed english major wrote the stories in the third person omniscent and filled them with homosexual longing? Me neither, but it's still interesting to know it exists and ask "why?".

Billy Bragg videos from 1991
I'm not much one for music videos, but Billy's "Sexuality" with Kirsty MacColl was one of my favorites back in the day. Sometime in the late 90's, I just assumed I'd never see it again. But ask and the Internet provides. There is also "You Woke Up My Neighborhood," with Peter Buck and Michael Stipe. I hadn't seen that one before, but it's wonderful, too.
Also enjoy a
greyer Billy playing at a fairly recent Strummerville benefit.
first link may be dodgy in firefox. Worked once for me but not on subsequent viewings.

Welcome to the Alabama of the Northeast.
Andrea Minnon of Lebanon said she had never heard of "The Catcher in the Rye" before she learned that it was on her 14-year-old son Spencer's freshman reading list.
Presumably because reading's not her strong point. But she wants the local school to ban it.

Seminar in Texas.
"Tribute to the Great Visionary." It's a triumph in both graphic design and public relations.

Another EXTREEM! version of christianity.
But this one's funny because it trades in The Clash's imagery and denies it. Contrast the in-your-face, Jesus-to-the-max logo with
Westway to the World, a documentary about The Clash (the title sequence in the film has the "roughened" quality of the church logo).
Naturally, a church this hardcore and bullshit free has to have a way to reach the kids. That vehicle is
Clash Radio, which is not to be confused with
Radio Clash. To be fair, it does look like this radical pastor's done some
hard livin'. Every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world, right?

The Duel.
A Flash feature. Actually, as I write this, I'm worried that it's lame. But I smiled and you don't have anything going on for the next three minutes, anyway.

Retro toys:
I remember using the garden hose to frantically try and dissolve that pink shit. We eventually cleaned the knife, but I remember big blobs of it still on the ground with ants stuck in it. We ended up keep Stretch's head as a trophy.
People reminisce about their old toys. Mostly about topics like how they
tortured GI Joe, made
mrs. beasley look like a victim of domestic violence, and knew that
Steve Scout was living an alternative lifestyle. Not every memory's a gem, but some are a real laugh.

Europe's oldest language?
Kalevi Wiik makes the argument that most of Europe may have spoken a proto Finno-Ugric language before the appearance of Indo-European speakers in the region. It's still controversial a few years after the paper was published (and likely always will be).
Modern European derivitives of the language in question are
Hungarian, the Ugric branch's sole representative in Europe, (although it has relatives in central Asia), as well as the Finnic
Finnish,
Estonian,
Karelian (which is considered by some to be a dialect of Finnish and not a separate language),
Izhora and
Veps (which are both disputed in language v. dialect and are nearly dead),
Vod (which is dead), Liv (which is dead and doesn't Google well), and the
Saami languages, which have about 10 dialects and a sufficiently different grammar and lexicon that it gets the "strange cousin" title.

I want my LTV, brothuh!
Interesting research in the field of trapping lobsters from the University of New Hampshire. Like so many people, I learned about lobsters on the street, so it's nice to see some hard science.

Lazarus would be proud.
Seminal 80's christian Hair Metal band Stryper are still around. And they're touring! And it's the
original line up! And they're
playing Boston tonight! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to find some modest-yet-rebellious clothing to wear and get to the show.
