When there are delays on the Underground due to a suicide, the line status message boards they have at many of the stations list the delay due to 'person under a train.' It seems to happen pretty regularly.

Good dance moves for two right feet
As much as I'm upset by this reversal, particularly since it has dealt a major blow to the rights of Americans, I think the thing I'm most upset about is the fact that Obama had an opportunity to lead and did not do it. This whole thing could have been a time for his ability to lead to shine through: you know that you're on the weak side of perceptions, but you swing people around to your point of view. He could have re-framed this whole debate into we don't need to give up our... [more]

Christmas + Tamales =
For those of you in LA (and coming to Pasadena soon!), I highly recommend Mama's Hot Tamales Cafe. Huge selection of tamales (changing regularly), and all delicious. And they help train people to start their own small businesses, so you can feel good about yourself even when you over-eat (and by "you" I mean "I").

drjimmy11: It should probably be noted that they morphed from Daughter into Another Brick in the Wall, and then added those lines onto the end. Not exactly genius, but they fit the cadence of the song.
FWIW, Pearl Jam's set was surprisingly awesome that night. I wasn't planning to even stick around, but I'm very glad that I did.

Sangermaine: I completely agree, but you left off what may be the best. episode. evar: Deep Space Homer. Our lives are all greatly improved by Kent Brockman's "And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords." Not to mention Barney bouncing along the roof of a pillow factory, only to be run over by a marshmallow truck.

I will almost always stick it out to the very end of a film, even if just to heckle. But Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom was a bit much for me. Might have been the shit eating scene, or one of the many ritualistic killings.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, just more than I could take at the time. And far, far slower than you'd think a movie like that would be.

Thought I'd throw this New Yorker article by Bill Buford on food television into the mix as well. Some good stuff on how the network evolved over time.

Come and get it!
A friend who was in the military told me about some guys in his unit who had been in Somalia. They would proudly tell stories of dragging bags of "food" behind their vehicles while the locals chased after them. Once they had made the Somalis run long enough, they cut the cord releasing the "food". When the Somalis got to it, they found the bags were filled with trash.
Sick.

It was San Jose - I was at the game. It would have been one thing if it was a small group of idiots booing the anthem - you've got idiots everywhere - but it was nearly the entire crowd. Particularly idiotic in this case, considering a large number of the players (and most of their stars) are Canadian.

Siskel and Ebert - Behind the Scenes
I didn't think it was that bad - first off, they're shooting promos, which has got to be the most repetitive, boring part of their week. Secondly, it was probably shot at the end of a day of shooting, so I imagine they just wanted to get the hell out of there.
Don't get me wrong, I know these two had a real love/hate relationship, but all things considered I didn't feel like there was any real venom in this piece. I'm sure all was forgotten the second they hit the... [more]

There's a Tony Luke's in NYC on 9th just south of 42nd. Good eating.
And I have had Jim's, Geno's and Pat's all in one day. And they were damn good. Although I was much skinnier and in much better cardio shape back then. Before that day started, that is.

From what I saw, I completely agree with you about those with physical disabilities: all were go-getters, ready to push themselves and do what it took to win. Their... [more]

I agree that the nightlife can be a bit slow though. Didn't they recently increase last call to 4 a.m. to help that out a bit? Also, do you think it is because of a lack of venues, or are people just too worn out after a full day of hiking/biking/skiing/<insert outdoorsy activity here>? dios, could it not be argued that Fox News should have known that the reporting of the address, whether correct or not, would have had a reasonable chance of sparking violence against the residents? Would that not supersede any intervening causes from this specific case?

I remember being over in London in early '98 and seeing the ads for "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the underground. They were black and white "action" shots of Jesus being led by police through thick crowds of fans and paparazzi. Very cool.

If you know anyone with a green card (or at least one that was issued in the mid-90s), take a look at the back of the card. There's an outline of all of the US with all of the state borders on it. The only thing left off is the UP of Michigan. Apparently they used the same cartographer.

Ogre: Saw that machine on the History Channel. They had video from inside the machine, which was great. You just see this furball fly into a big foam thing, then gently fall onto a pillow and walk away. Looked like a great solution. True for their consumer systems, absolutely false for their PowerMacs. Since the old beige G3s (and even before that) all you had to do to get at your computer's innards was to push a button/pull a latch and open the side of the case like a door. Doesn't get any easier than that.
