Do burglars read AskMeFi?
I put my valuables in a box at the bottom of my laundry basket. If I'm on a long vacation, I'll leave extra boxers spilling over the sides with a special pair that I decorated with chocolate syrup right on top.

Atlanta nightlife for a new resident?
Saturday nights, Metalsome Live Rock Band Karaoke.
Dad's Garage is always a great time, anytime. Tonight is the opening of FWD in the Top Shelf of Dad's. It was co-created by Mefi's own clunkyrobot. I'll be there for the opening tonight.
If you want to meet a bunch of people who like to socialize join a local kickball team: WAKA.
Also, you should join the Atlanta People With Blogs Who Get Together To Drink. We meet once... [more]

Call some local churches and ask if they have, or know of, a local program to help people in her situation. Sometimes, churches have sponsor programs where member families help others families in need.

How painful will my tonsil removal be?
I had my tonsils out when I was 30. It was extremely painful.
I stayed on the couch for a week and a half, taking pain medication and slipping in and out of consciousness to watch the Food Network, longing for the day that I could once again swallow without excruciating pain shooting throughout my throat and ears. I lost 15lbs. in two weeks.
However, I would gladly do it over again if it meant avoiding the constant infected tonsils that laid me... [more]

Maui-Wowie
Just got back from Maui. We stayed a few days at the Grand Wailea. Fantastic resort. Right on a beautiful beach. Several pools connected by small water slides. Two big water slides. Swim up bar in a grotto type area. Short lazy river area. There is also an adult pool if you want to get away from children. Beautiful gardens.
Had the breakfast buffet, was just ok. Ate at Humu Humu in the resort. Great food, open air atmosphere, great for sunset dining.

Beard, or no beard for my wedding?
Wow, there are so many compelling arguments both ways. To answer some questions, I’ve had my beard for six months. I’ve known my fiancée for three years. She loves the beard, but also likes me sans beard. Maybe she’s not terrified of making the decision, she’s been thinking about it for days, since I first asked her, but she’s had to make a billion other decisions this past year regarding the planning and I feel like she’s burned out. I probably shouldn't have brought it up to her in the first... [more]

Thanks for all the great answers. After reading the thread several times last night with my fiancée, I decided to shave. I’m beardless and I feel twelve, but she is really happy and that makes me happy.
I’m letting it grow back on the honeymoon, though.
Thanks again.

Ex-Files: Summer Vacation Issue
You are well within your rights to tell him that you changed your mind and are no longer comfortable with them traveling together. As your boyfriend, he should consider your feelings above those of his ex. I can see where you might be scared to discover where he holds his priorities by asking him to make a choice, but you need to tell him. If your are agonizing over this now, it’s only going to feel a hundred times worse if they go on the trip together. Not to mention the nagging suspicions... [more]

Am I a prude because I wanted to date for a month before hittin' the sheets?
If he really wanted to be with you -- You as a person -- he would have waited. Anyone not willing to wait is looking for cheap thrills and is not worth your time.
He continues to flirt in hopes he'll either wear down your defenses, or catch you at the "right" time or in a weak moment. He's done putting any real effort into it, though. That's probably why he's only flirting in emails.

Should we discourage silly child's behavior?
She reminds me of my cousin. Completely batshit annoying, starved for attention type. Her parents placed her in theater classes as an outlet. She became an actress, is now a successful producer and is very pleasant to be around.

Mold in the US.
I've lived in Florida and GA. In both states, I have been required to sign papers at new apartment buildings stating that as the resident, I am responsible for the removal of any mold that grows during my lease. Mold is a big problem, it flourishes in the humid conditions. I'm not sure about the coastal areas.

Take an improv or acting class. Beginning improv classes usually have some teamwork and trust building exercises. The interaction you have with other classmates will go a long way to building relationships outside of the class.

Some men are islands
This happened to me after a very long relationship as well. I was fortunate that I was close to friends. However, I still felt alone even in crowds. I lost my single socializing skills in favor of a couple’s mindset. When that was gone, I felt very awkward. I tried to force myself into situations, but they usually turned out poorly because I wasn’t happy with myself.

Sounds like you suffer from good old-fashioned Hickey Dick. It happens with overzealous oral action from inexperienced lovers. Leave it alone, it should go away. You can use a cold compress, but not too long, that's a sensitive area as you have discovered.
If it gets worse, it's probably something else so don't be afraid to call/see your doctor again.

Comedic writer wants a shot
I recently attended a workshop with a sitcom writer. One of the books he suggested was "Story" by Robert Mckee. I just started it, and while it's billed as a screenwriting how-to, I've found a lot of the principles he writes about are applicable to all forms of writing.

Forgot to mention that he also suggested “On Writing” by Stephen King. As well as starting a blog (which it seems you have) joining a local improv group, writing articles for local magazines and newspapers, writing spec scripts, write, write, write.
I’ve also heard that performing stand-up is a great way to discover your own rhythm. That’s not to say that all comedians are great writers, but that it can sharpen the skills of people who can write.... [more]

Advice on how to get through the holiday season without losing my mind and my temper?
Holidays are not necessarily for spending time with family but with loved ones. I understand that you want to see your nieces and nephews. However, the rest of your family isn’t showing much love for you.
If you do continue to go, I would sit down with your parents and ask them if they really want you around when the family gets together. Tell them how you feel. Let them know what behaviors hurt you. Ask them if anything you are doing now elicits this treatment. If it... [more]

It's like that where I'm from. I always go out because all my old friends are in town visiting their families. It's a good time to catch up with friends and get ready for the madness that is the family the next day.

Seriously, I wouldn't get caught up in this situation anymore than offering advice or just lending an ear. She sounds like she needs professional help. Having her move in sounds like a bad idea, and would probably drag you into a life of drama and codependency. If you do take her in, make sure it’s understood that she has to go to therapy for the duration of her stay. If it makes you feel better, help her... [more]
