MeFi post: "They gave me a uniform, a little gun and little pistol"
Not a helpful contribution since I can't recall the film's title but this story has an uncanny resemblance to a holocaust film about a Jewish boy who alternately masqueraded as a German and as a Russian depending on which army caught him. In the end he was in German uniform about to be executed by the Russians when his brother recognized him. The last scene is them urinating openly since the hero of the film had spent the war ingeniously trying to hide that he was circumcised.

I love Waffle House -- best part of moving to the south (ok, Maryland).

Its not an acoustic cover, but the Supersuckers have a great cover of Hey Ya too.

MeFi post: You look like a cross between Gary Cooper and Liberace!
I "look" like Chester Bennington (???) despite he being a clean shaven blonde and I a goateed brunette. But worse, my 20 month year old son "looks" like Ross Perot!

MeFi post: Plagiarism and Vice
I briefly read the two articles cited and I'm sympathetic to Brad Vice. I'm a fan of Allan Hollinghurst, and his novel The Folding Star is very much a recasting of Bruges le Mort and Philip Kerr's Berlin Noir has, so far, been a retelling of Chandler's Big Sleep and High Window. I would say I'm not a huge fan of this trend, and feel let down when I find it obvious, but I think it is a legit trend.

MeFi post: Edoardo Agnelli was a moslem
"Why is 'Moslem' incorrect?"

Because, if I recall correctly, in Arabic there is no equivalent for "o" or "e." The general transliteration is, as was noted, Muslim.

MeFi post: Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.
In 1992 I spent the summer in Jordan and saw an episode of the Simpsons on local TV. It was broadcast in English with Arabic subtitles. My strongest memory of the episode was when Homer says "Bar-be-que" and it was translated in Arabic as "Shwarma!"

When Arafat married I think it was the NY Post that ran the headline "Yassir That's My Baby!"

MeFi post: Teresa Heinz Kerry
My take on konolia is that her point was an observation that for (some number of) Americans Hillary was an issue, which is pretty indisputable. I agree with Wulfgar! that she was an asset to the ticket and I've had the privilege of voting for her as Senator.

MeFi post: Images of war in Southeast Europe
Beautiful photos and a great idea but many of the images (that I looked at) were so gorgeous that I think it undermines the goal of demythifying war. On the other hand the images from the Jenin camp at rotten.com were so grotesque that I was shaken by them days later.

MeFi post: Worst Jobs in Science
I disagree with # 10 on the list. I have a two year postdoc which is fantastic. Pays decently, doesn't demand much, leaves a lot of time for reading and writing.

MeFi post: by Joris-Karl Huysmans, 1884. Virtual Reality 19th...
In related readings, Jullian Philippe's Prince of Aesthetes about Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac is a chatty biography. Huysmans modelled Des Essientes on Montesquiou to the latters great dismay.
