Attention SQL gurus. This has me completely stumped. How can I find the index (position) of a row in a table without querying the entire set?

Ultimate DOM Drop-Shadows
A
recent AskMe thread asked about creating cross-browser-happy drop-shadows, and some of the responses got me to thinking I might be able to do it better. So witness my attempt to create the
Ultimate HTML/CSS/JS/ETC. drop-shadow. [+]

Time-zone custom settings don't work properly for AskMe or MeTa, you California-centric bastard.

Public service announcement: There are some MeFi members that may need temporary shelter from the evacuation of New Orleans. If anyone lives in the area and has an extra bed or couch handy, please post here.

TVFilter: I'm trying to identify two TV shows. Both are from the early 90s (IIRC). The first features a teen who secretly works for a spy agency. The second is a gritty film-noir-style detective show that takes place in the 40s-50s.

Here are
two pictures of a kind of rather large (1" long body), nasty spider that I'm finding all over my apartment [scary pictures warning]. Please help me identify it.

Bug: the
recent comments page is grouped again, but it looks like comments for the Blue are in reverse-post order. AskMe are in the correct order.

This is
NOT what AskMe is for. The poster even acknowledges it in defiance.

Additional bounced check fees? I deposited a check that ended up bouncing. Before I figured this out, I wrote a check on the account that subsequently bounced. So, I get a $25.00 fee for the deposited check, another $25.00 fee for the check I wrote,
but now the institution I wrote the check to wants to tack on an additional $25.00 fee. Can they do this?

A question for any male gay mefi members -- or those in the know. It's my understanding that a good percentage of gay men are either exclusively "tops" or "bottoms". My question is this: how can you tell? Are the stereotypical gay mannerisms in fact just a subtle form of communicating this preference? Do you come straight out and ask? Or do you wait until the moment is upon you and hope for the best?

As the Boston Red Sox
are poised to head to the 2003 World Series in a final American League matchup (the first Game 7 featuring opposing Cy Young pitchers) featuring ex-Sox
Roger Clemens (the only person to ever win 6 Cy Young Awards) against
Pedrom Martinez (3 Cy Young's), I thought I would offer a brief glimpse into every Boston Fan's nightmares:
The Curse. [More Horror Inside]

Israel passes marriage law
that prevents Palestinians who marry Israelis to live together. The new law, effective for one year, was inacted today to prevent residency permits from being abused for terrorist intentions. Does any of this
sound familiar?

Will Ferrell's Harvard commencement speech
quotes from the greatest -- "I believe it was Shakespeare who said it best when he said, 'Look yonder into the darkness for knowledge onto which I say go onto that which thou possess into thy night for thee have come with only a single sword and vanquished thee into darkness.'" - Some Sunday humor for MeFolk.
