My mother routinely packed my school lunches all through high school. She added little notes to the lunches periodically, notes about having a good day, how much she loved me, good luck on the test I know you'll do great. It didn't matter what grade I was in, third or 11th, I loved getting those little notes.

My oldest niece is disabled and in a wheelchair. It is extremely frustrating for her mom to pick her up at school when the only two handicapped spaces are filled by people picking up their grandkids. These are grandparents with real and honest disabilities, but they never get out of the car. Instead they wait for their grandkids to come to them. A frozen tsunami crashed into Barrow, Alaska last January, causing all sorts of damage.

These are lovely and make me homesick. One of the men in his pictures, Larry, was the father of my best friend in high school. I was always so sad when their family left to go fishing every summer. My family fished as well, but we stayed near Homer and came home for church every weekend.

Forgot to mention that my father got hundreds of resumes from young men every year hoping to get a spot on his fishing boat. Some of them had cover letters and full-color glossy photos, and others were handwritten on lined paper. As far as I know, he never hired one because, as he told me once, none of them knew what they were asking for and probably wouldn't last.

Here in Fairbanks we had a week between -40&degF and -50°F just a week ago, but thankfully we rarely ever have any windchill; coldest I've experienced is -56°F.

Best temperatures for a dip in the hot springs, though.
