Pakore. I made a huge batch this weekend, so it's kinda on my mind. Also, I'm kinda stuffed.

Ask post: Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?
Tandoori paste mixed with nonfat yogurt; marinate the chicken for an hour (or overnight if you have the time). Bake or grill it the next day. You will not need anything else for flavor.

A recipe to make your own: http://www.ochef.com/209.htm
(I haven't tried that recipe, so can't vouch for it -- I always just buy paste in a jar from my local Indian store)

Ask post: What are some non-English words meaning "bastard"?
Solomon, I think you may be thinking of the feminine version of Haramzada , Haramzadi . Even though it doesn't say anything about Punjabi in the article, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same there too.

Ask post: Have you ever tasted your wife/girlfriend's breast milk when she was lactating?
A friend of mine that just gave birth mentioned, very casually, that her breast milk is very sweet. A few of us were in the kitchen together cooking Thanksgiving dinner, and I believe it came up while discussing desserts. So, just adding another data point to those saying that it's not a big deal and curiosity is natural. Give it a try!

Ask post: Give us some breathing room.
I tend to avoid classy places, so I can't offer much advice (though I can't imagine it'd be hard to find what you describe amid the plethora of classy DC options), but I think Eat Bar might be what you're looking for. It rents out its back room for private parties, and while there are (nice) couches if people feel like sitting, there is lots of standing room for mingling. No real tables in the back room. The food is great. Might not actually be classy enough by legal DC standards, but it is... [more]

Ask post: What is a vegan dessert that tastes like real food?
My friend claims she made this for a group of non-vegans, and they were a hit. She says no one believed they were vegan when she told them. I haven't tried them myself but they sound good.

Vegan Snowball Cookies

1 cup margarine (some "normal" varieties are; just check) or soy margarine
2 cups sifted flour
1 cup sifted powder sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups chopped... [more]

Ask post: Another lame medical question
I did something similar to my big toe once. Yes, just keep it clean, and maybe covered to keep it from snagging on stuff. It'll fall off eventually, but you can have a doctor speed things up. I waited until friends insisted that I go to the doctor. When I did, the doctor actually said, "What do you want me to do? Pull it off?" I left it, it came off on its own, and it wasn't even hurting anymore by then.

Ask post: Do I maintain non-owner auto insurance or just cancel entirely?
Sorry, I didn't mention my state earlier; I'm in Virginia, where it seems it does matter. Thanks for all the great input! I didn't realize this was actually a pretty complex issue; I thought I was just naive. I appreciate all the advice and information. I'm still undecided, but I think you all have given me a lot of good points to think about. Off to research current rates!

Ask post: Maggots on my ceiling?
Thanks everyone! You were overwhelmingly right and I'm left wondering what other obvious stuff I don't know about. After reading your answers, I suddenly understood why my mom kept all her dry goods in glass jars.

It had really never occurred to me that something so nasty could be lurking in dry goods. I checked the cabinets, and sure enough, that's where the moths and larvae were coming from. I think it was a bag of almonds that caused it (at least that's what had... [more]

Ask post: Am I deaf?
I have the exact same problem! I've even gone the extra step and had my hearing tested twice, by two different doctors (though both were just general practitioners, not specialists). Both said that I should be able to hear fine and had no advice. I'd resigned myself to the lazy conclusion that my hearing is just "lazy" or that I am mentally lazy and unwilling to differentiate between background noise and pertinent noise. However, you have given me hope (I'm not sure why). I... [more]

Should've previewed. Contraption, you've described it perfectly; it's the competing for attention feeling (maybe that's why I feel lazy? I just give up.). I haven't been diagnosed with ADD, but I've never gotten checked either. That's an interesting correlation that never occurred to me (see? lazy.). I'll stop piggy-backing now.

Ask post: I want a Dyson!
I didn't think this applied earlier on in the discussion, because the question seemed to be "which Dyson?" instead of "is Dyson really a good idea?" -- but since the discussion has ventured that way anyway: this earlier thread might be useful. Lots of discussion about Dysons in general, and comparisons to other brands, including Mieles and Riccars.

And to summarize my comment in that earlier thread (my family has been in the vacuum business for over... [more]

Yay! Smilla, I didn't even realize you were in the area. In this small-world-case, I'm happy to hear that you were happy with your vacuum, and even recommending it. I love mine too. But then again, I'm a sucker for ugly but practical machines.

Ask post: Muslim Online Forum?
I know a good friend of mine used to spend some time at nefisa. Their forum is linked under "light" in the navigation. Having just checked it out, however, it looks like it has been recently deserted and overwhelmed with spam. If you're looking for old discussions to just browse through, I think you'll find it interesting. It's not exactly what you want (not nearly as big as Ship of Fools, it seems), but it is/was a pretty thoughtful and open-minded discussion.... [more]

Ask post: Drop in dance classes in DC or NoVA?
Thanks for all the great suggestions mefites! I marked sarahsynonymous's as the best answer, because that's what I've decided to go with, but Joy of Motion and the others seem great too. I appreciate all the help! I just knew there had to be other options.

Feel free to keep the suggestions coming in, for future reference.

Yes, it was the Bollywood and Bhangra classes that tipped the scales in DC Dance Collective's favor.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll explain the options to my dad and see what we can figure out. I really appreciate all the help. Please feel free to keep commenting if you have more suggestions.

Ask post: Dust busting
The guys I work with (I work in the vacuum and air purifier industry) recommend the Blueair Digital 250E Air Purifier, which is in the same price range as the Consumer Reports choices recommended above. The replacement filter prices are also comparable. If you're willing to spend more, the IQAir HealthPro Plus was recently rated Best Air Cleaner by Wired Magazine (scroll down), but it comes with an expectably larger price tag. The Wired article also has other ratings for air purifiers,... [more]

Ask post: The Weird and Wonderful World of Chili
I don't know if this will be unusual enough for you, but since chili beer was mentioned: I tasted chili wine at a Virginia wine festival. I think it's the cooking wine at the bottom of this page, called "Kiss the Devil".
posted to Ask Metafilter by sa3z at 1:38 PM on December 1, 2006
From a friend: Chili can also used to replenish iron in women who are on their periods and to clean intestines (not necessarily at the same time). That last bit about cleaning intestines would go along with Kadin2048's laxative finding.

Ask post: Fairfax food finder!
Seconding Tyler Cowen's guide and offering an alternative to Minerva: Saravana Palace. It's newer, but better IMHO. Fairfax DOES have great non-chain restaurants, but I'd recommend sticking to ethnic food if you want to see what Fairfax does best.

Ask post: anti-winter!
Seconding what vytae said (thanks for giving me the courage to admit my naivete): SCARF! So simple, so cheap, so unbelievably effective. Who knew? The first day I wore one (as an adult, I mean), I had to check the weather twice to make sure it wasn't actually warmer outside. I can not believe what a difference it makes. And, get a nice soft one -- it'll make you more likely to wear it. I think the reason I stopped wearing them when I was 4, was because they were so damn itchy. A simple... [more]

Ask post: Hardwood steam cleaner
I, too, would worry about using steam on an unfinished wood floor, but if you were intent on it, this seems to be similar and comparable in price. (Semi-self-link -- that's to my Dad's site, as mentioned in earlier posts) The Eureka model has been discontinued, you're right; there aren't many other steam cleaners in that price range that I know of, besides the Earlex linked. Ask post: Dyson vs. carpet
digitalis, I bet the brand you're thinking of is Riccar. (Self-link disclaimer: That's a link to my father's site, which only has information about Riccar -- they don't sell Riccars online) Riccars are relatively unheard of on the vast internet, because they can't be sold on the internet (manufacturer's policy). Ask post: Where do my curls come from?
Just chiming in: pure-bred Punjabi here (which means heavily mixed with every Indian invader ever, as far as I can tell), with uncontrollable curly hair. I get mistaken for every ethnicity under the sun, yet still get told by Indians that I look very "classical Indian" (whatever that means). Personally, I always associated the stick-straight sheet of jet-black hair with South Indians or girls with hair straighteners. And I agree that the comments along the lines of "India's a... [more]

Ask post: Good *cheap* Ethiopian food in DC
It seems Casa Mia, Lalibela in Arlington is a good bet. It's recommended at Tyler Cowen's Ethnic Dining Guide (that's just the Ethiopian category), and if it's the same place I went to (can't remember the name, but the location seems about right) it's very reasonably priced. A good overall summary of Ethiopian in the DC area in that link.

Ask post: Good books about female sexual health and body issues?
The Big Bang. It's described as an "advanced" book, but I found it to have a lot of good basic information about sexual health, taking care of pink parts (including avoiding and treating yeast infections), loving oneself, STDs and even the emotions involved in the whole scenario. Plus, the tone is way better than some serious scary health book.

Thanks so much WestCoaster. This is exactly the kind of information we were looking for. I had a bad feeling about the kind of service they provided, but no real reasons.
