Why the gender discrepancy?
Can give me a list of why my SUPER SECRET AMAZING MARKETING PLAN is really really AMAZING and will obviously make you A MILLION DOLLARS? There are obviously NO NEGATIVES at all, so can someone tell me how AWESOME I am?

It's "great" !
Since I'm an active member of MeFi, it breaks my heart to see these things.
Why? Seriously, why?
I propose we start a website of like-minded people to, unapologetically, promote our agenda.
What is your agenda? Pedantry for the masses?

His wife has found his username on a porn site. How does this even make sense?
Are there porn sites with comments, or something? As in, there's the porn at the top and people posting "that's some good porn right there" in a comment-thread type situation at the bottom?
I was wondering the same thing. The only conclusion I was able to come to was that someone was using it as a screen name to log into the sites. I... [more]

I've never seen as pure an example of relationship trainwreck tourism as this metatalk thread and the comments in the accompanying ask posts.

s it possible this whole thing is a scam? Just putting it out there, because if so, this is fantastic performance art and totally worth my five bucks. Well played, whoever you are.
I wondered that myself. If the OP was a one-hit-wonder, I'd be inclined to believe it was a scam but this is pretty odd behavior from someone who has been around for a while, participating in lots of drama-free threads.

Great detective work, but I think what's needed here is less detective work andmore compassion. Why are mrleec's ask posts not deleted? Why isn't the comment where his wife posts under his name not deleted?
This stuff is embarrassing and harmful to them and to their relationship, and the compassionate thing would be to delete it, not let it sit out for our amusement and Google's caching.
The OP didn't ask for this question,... [more]

Can we post jobs that we're not actually in charge of? Like, if I know of an opening right now in my industry, but not at my organizaiton (um, and I don't want it), can/should I post the link here?
I think that would be a great use of the jobs section. To keep the poster from being bombarded with questions about the position, it would probably be helpful to have some sort flag indicating that the poster was passing along info, rather than posting an... [more]

Is an Infoviz of MetaFilter copying, stealing, or remixing?
I think if this were a compilation of things found on the net in general, it would be a cool art project. That it is all exclusively from askme, where people spill their guts and expect things to be kept in this venue, it is a little creepy. It seems almost like a way to establish your own known, popular post secret type project off the back of the metafilter network, which is, as said before, kind of creepy and kind of hackish.
So, as a project: cool. Limited to AskMe:... [more]

I don't mind a general sidebar saying happy birthday to (list of mefites w/ bdays that day), somewhere on the site. However, if people start using MetaTalk as a birthday greeting card (this includes posts of birthday greetings to the mods), then it would be annoying.

So the point is to request research on a topic that is of interest to you, but not interesting enough to do the research yourself? I'm guessing any research desire could easily be turned into a question on askme. For instance "can anyone tell me about cool-ass 1970-80's commercial product iconography, bonus points for images," or something like that. Then everyone will scour the ends of the internet to answer your question in hopes of the best answer gold star. It's like a distributed... [more]

I agree with kickstart70. Plenty of people create projects that are metafilterish in nature, or cater to the needs of the metafilter community. I'm sure they'd LOVE the traffic boost and ready-made audience that comes from a self-link post on one of the more active sections of metafilter (blue, grey, green).
It seems like a worthy project and all, but it also seems like an abuse of power to directly go against the rules that apply to everyone else. This really should... [more]

Metafilter collective buying power.
Insurance questions come up all the time, especially ones geared toward the options out there for self-employed/freelancers. I've often thought that it would be an interesting idea to explore the possibility buying health insurance as a group. Anyone else interested in this idea?

ive been going out with ma boy
This is why text-speak drives me to distraction: both "my" and "ma" have two letters. What is the point of writing "ma" instead of "my"? You can't even blame it on the desire to be economical with letters. Why would someone go out of their way to change a two letter word? Also, does anyone even pronounce it "ma"?

I have no idea how much work this would require, but would it be possible to have a comment number indicator like:
comment 10 posted by timeistight at 1:04 PM on November 4 [+] [!]
If it was possible, and if deleted comments wouldn't bump-up later comments, it would be easy to see that comments 2-5 were deleted.
Again, I have no idea whether this is possible or how much work would be involved in doing it.

Brandon Blatcher and Baphomet, I agree. I couldn't care less whether or not comments are deleted, mine included. I can usually tell when an odd comment is really a reply to a deleted comment, and when I can't, I think the commenter is just odd. No big deal.
What would annoy me is a constant break in the thread for a [comment deleted] notice. After that, people would lobby for [comment deleted because it was flagged X times] notices, and since people seem to constantly... [more]

Here is what I don't understand: If someone lurks and participates to some extent and they still don't get mefi, then why can't they accept that it isn't the place for them?
