I have decided to spend my (non-hypothetical) vacation backpacking alone for the week, in the mid-atlantic or northeastern US. However, I am not sure where is best for me to do this, as I have a number of minor concerns and have not done extended backpack travel on a schedule like this -- at least not as a civilian.
Specific concerns follow, and overlap somewhat, so apologies for that.

Matthew:
For a long time, I have been sad at the loss of HypotheticalFilter. When AskMe was young, such questions would arise. But those days are gone now, as the site matured.
It's simply not done, you'd say. It floods the page with nonsense. It makes the real questions get lost. Still, I thought, I want to know
how to dispose of a body, or
how long we'd survive without the sun. Who would win in a fight? A squirrel, or a squirrel's weight in ants?

So I always have boring haircuts. Standard businessman cut type. Cause I'm lazy and hate having to do anything with it in the morning. And this morning I realized it is now at the point where it needs to be cut as it's looking, well, like it needs to be cut. (How it looks right now:
me1,
me2,
me3, though for some reason in the pics it looks a lot less in need of cleanup than it does in real life.)
So I'd like to do something a bit more interesting, a bit more daring. Not much, but a little. I'm kind of in a turning myself around mentally state, and it's passing over into things like this. And you know what style (roughly) I like? David Tennant-ish messy. Seen
here and
here....

Written in 1967 by Bob Dylan, it was originally
quiet, lowkey... and vaguely menacing. But when Jimi Hendrix
redefined it the following year, even
Dylan knew that the song had changed forever.
Since then, it's been
covered (
over and over again),
praised almost as often,
analyzed,
referenced, and, of course,
found to be encoded in the minds of Cylons.
Originally released 40 years ago, erm, yesterday: All Along the Watchtower.

There's a Batman panel I have a clear, but possibly flawed memory of.. where is it from?
Likely written well after, but taking place shortly after The Killing Joke, I have a clear image of Barbara Gordon, in the hospital, talking to Batman (or possibly Bruce Wayne), realizing she'll never walk again, never be batgirl again, that this incident has derailed her entire planned existence, and essentially saying something to the effect of "I've heard when the police pulled up, you were standing there laughing with the man who did this to me, and I wanted to know.. were you laughing at me?"
Where is this from? It can't just be in my head, can it?

I'm looking for an authoritative price guide for postage stamps, primarily US stamps from prior to 1960, similar to the Overstreet guides printed for comic books. There are a number of such stamps I would like to look up.
Online would be great, physical guides that need to be purchased would be fine too. Thanks in advance.

I find the "7 minutes ago" style of dating found on the "My Activity" to be far easier to parse than the normal way it is listed in threads. Any chance of a profile switch to enable that site-wide with the detail time available on a hover or something?

So I'm putting together a collection of "Rules for Life" as a gift for my 15 year old little brother, that I'll likely put together on one of those one-off vanity book publishery things... and I'm looking for some suggestions as to some good rules.
Looking for real advice for obscure situations one might find themselves in, great quotes that can inspire someone to live their life better, serious thoughts that people have realized later in their life that they wish someone had told them previously, and a good dose of humor. Cliche as it is,
Mary Schmich's "Wear Sunscreen" column gives a decent examples of the general tone I want for most of it.
So.... What else should I put in the book?

Something is really wrong with my ear - It feels very clogged, very stuffed, and I can't hear out of it well at all -
It isn't wax, after a week of trying over the counter wax removal stuff, I went to a Doc who confirmed that my ears were clean and not waxy - so it must be stuffed up on the other side, and she gave me some prescription decongestant. She said it would clear in 24 hours or so - That was Saturday. It's very unpleasant, and with it not going away, it's actually really scary - and with my work hours, I can't get back to the doc until the weekend at the earliest. Anyone have thoughts, suggestions, anything? I'm really quite desperate at this point.

I'd be curious to know if we have numbers on what percent of marriages for, say, last year (the actual span isn't super important, as long as its recent or can be combined with recent to show trends), were same-sex marriages.
Worldwide, for a specific state/province, for a specific country, all of the above, whatever. I'm easy. I'll take what I can get. :-)

Any guidance?

Nowhere in the rhyme about "Humpty Dumpty" is there a reference to him being an egg - least not in any version I ever heard. So why is he always portrayed, without exception, as an egg?

Boogie to the boogie say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie!
What songs use this lyric (or some clear variation of it?) I'm pretty sure it originates from Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight'. At the very least this song popularized it. And it appears in, for example, Kid Rock's 'Bawitdaba', Will Smith's 'Freakin it', and 311's 'Welcome'
So what other songs make some use of this classic hip-hop lyric???

Under the US's 'wet foot, dry foot' policy, Cubans who reach U.S. soil are allowed to stay while those caught at sea are sent home.
Hypothetically (and I mean that), Let's say an American were to: take a boat out between the US and Cuba, drive around looking for refugees, pick them up, brings them back to Florida, and there ends his involvement.
Is the American guilty of a crime? Does it make a difference if the authorities find out after the fact instead of catching him out on the open sea?

For 170 years, crossing the Channel from the UK to France would have brought you 11 days forward in time, and crossing back would have brought you 11 days earlier. Why? Because the Church of England wasn't about to adopt
a new Calendar instituted by
a Catholic pope. After all, if the old style was
good enough for Caesar.... In fact, it took over 300 years for the new Gregorian Calendar to
come into use throughout Europe, causing, no doubt, more than a few missed lunch dates as people forgot to
convert between them as they traveled.
There are, of course,
many other calendars in use around the world, and no shortage of people suggesting that
let's do the time warp again.

DrRichardKimbleFilter:
A man is arrested for murder, and appears absolutely 100% sure to be convicted. He then escapes from prison (assume no one is hurt or property damaged in the escape,) tracks down the real killer, and proves beyond any doubt whatsoever that he is innocent as all hell, and all murder charges were dropped.
How much trouble is this guy going to be in for escaping? What fate awaits him?
Asking both the strictly legal answer, and thoughts on what would actually end up happening.

Yet
ANOTHER Election Night
Question: What network should I be locked into on Tuesday night? I want fairness, either by straight non-partisanship or true balance, good solid analysis of what each state's results mean as we go, and some personality and banter to keep it interesting. ABC? CNN? MSNBC? FOX News? (hah. just kidding about that one.)

A recent viewing of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror with the segment "Genesis Tub" reminds me of (what I assume) is the original short story that inspired it.... but I just... cannot... think of it....
I almost certainly have the nuances wrong, but in the story, a scientist creates microscopic life that begins to worship him as God. At one point, he has them create a forcefield which completely blocks them off from the outside world, but they soon shut it down, because they can no longer stand being isolated from their God. Anyone remember who and what this story is?

I have a meeting upcoming with some of my legislators, on various levels, and I want to be able to make a good 5-minute proposal for Instant Run-off voting. Not that I expect to outright win them over, but hopefully hit a few points up front to make them sit up and pay attention, and maybe plant a few "hmmm" thoughts.
As a more specific sub-question on the same topic, I'd like to make the argument that, since 2004 is too soon for any change, and we cannot tell the future, it would be a non-partisan change. I think it's agreed that Gore would have won in 2000 under Instant Run-off voting. Am I correct in my belief that under IRO, Bush would have won re-election in 1992?
