Ask post: Listen again! Why do people listen to music repeatedly?
I don't have a science answer, but my guess is that, with novels and film, we view them for the story first and foremost. Once we know the story, know the twists and turns, we can never enjoy it quite the same way again. Not that we can't enjoy it, but not the same way. So we add distance to allow us to recapture that as best we can.

But music, we don't get an intellectual stimulation from, but an emotional one. Music gives us happiness and sadness. It prompts memories,... [more]

Ask post: Should I say or should I come?
Sort of a me too - but Yes, we want to know. Yes, we want to know exactly what worked and what didn't. And yes, just say what you want using words.

If someone doesn't want to do what gives you pleasure, or doesn't even seem to care, then they are obviously not compatible in the bedroom. But you won't know that if you don't tell them.

LordSludge is correct. Everyone is different, and we need to be (for lack of a better term) retrained for each new... [more]

Ask post: How can I share a single file/folder on my Mac?
For a folder that you'll continually be adding and removing things from, Foldershare is great...

I use it with many friends on a daily basis, but if you're looking more for a one off, it's really not an appropriate option.

Ask post: Why does my 12" Powerbook overheat so much?
That's not a 2-fan machine is it? My MB Pro had an issue where only one fan was spinning. Apple store fixed it up no problem, but make sure that that isn't the issue. Since you can hear a fan so loudly, it could easily not occur to you that one isn't spinning at all....

Ask post: Will XP soon be going the way of the Caribbean monk seal?
In my opinion, having XP instead of Vista is a feature, not a bug. I keep Vista and XP installed on my Macbook Pro, (this is what I do for a living,) and I spend way more time in XP, as it makes me want to murder whoever is around me far less. That said, it'll get better, and you can find as much anecdotal evidence saying "it's wonderful" as you can saying "it sucks".

(actually, that's a lie, but the positive ones are notably less of a minority than... [more]

(p.s. despite being a windows sysadmin, note my choice of laptops above. there's a reason for that. blah blah, alternatives, keep your options open, blah blah. sorry. I think I'm required to do that or I lose my apple card or something.)

puddpunk makes a good point about SP1. It's quite an improvement over the initial release. I seem to recall disliking XP til SP1, and not really liking it til SP2. It is a valid point - Vista is only going to get better, and will likely pass XP before long. Since I have access to both, I'm fine stalling on XP until that point. If you're only buying one comp/os for the next 2-3 years or so - Vista will likely end up the better long term choice.

Assuming, of course, that... [more]

Definitely run to the apple store. As a man with about 19 Apple products, who also happens to be the clumsiest person alive -- well, I'm consistently pleasantly surprised by what Apple will gladly fix for you.

Which is why I keep coming back to them.

Ask post: I need my Spider-Man!
Take the hike and go to Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank. I don't know if they do pull boxes, but - come on, it's Kevin Smith.

They do, and when I lived there, they always treated me swell, but it's a bit of a trek. Closer to Montvale, I definitely remember there being a store with a very good graphic novel collection up around Cedar Grove / Little Falls about 5 or 6 years ago, though I forget the name. Ask post: How to say goodbye to someone already gone?
A friend of mine was trying to help me do something similar with a loved one I lost, and she said that what she does for the people she'd lost, is to basically send a balloon up with a message to them. Not 100% on if she literally attached a note, or if it was more the spirit of it, but I rather liked that idea.

Yeah, I simply called the IRS main number and got several years of them without a problem. Didn't even need to fill out forms, just verify info on the phone that i was who i said I was, and bam, mailed right off. No cost, either.

Ask post: How do I get a definitive answer from a girl I like?
Now for the bad news. Forget her. She already knows that you're interested in her. She is choosing someone else over you (whether they have a connection from the past or not is irrelevent). She either isn't as interested in you as you are in her, or she prefers someone else. Either way, move on.

I'd have to agree with this. It sucks, but that's the way the world works. Your interest is on the record. If she ever want to pick up on it, she has that... [more]

Ask post: Defrag an iPod?
well, As long as all your files exist in iTunes, a simple "remove all music from the iPod and then out it all back" will essentially BE a defrag. If you want to go a little more, restore the iPod to factory first. Quicker, simpler, does the same thing as a defrag (which may or may not do... well.. anything, but whatever.)

Ask post: Seeking stories in mp3!
The Classic Tales Podcast reads stories now in the public domain, from Poe, Twain, Hawthorne, etc. (That's an iTunes link, but you can likely google it if you don't use iTunes)

The Seanachai is pretty much abandoned now, but it was a pretty good storytelling podcast in the day, and you'll find their archives worthwhile.

Not really what you're looking for, but NPR's This American Life also has fiction from time to time.... [more]

Ask post: Where in the NE US can a new backpacker get his backpacking wings?
Definitely some great advice here. I think the part that really made sense is Miko's:

Err on the shorter side - maybe if you just go ahead and plan 5-mile days, you will be sure to make your end point and remove that stress. That doesn't mean you get less out of your trip. With extra time built into the day, you are free to do spur hikes that might take you out and back on a scenic trail. You can add in the extraneous loops that trails sometimes feature. You... [more]

Ask post: I need Dr. Who watching advice.
Mostly a "me too" post, but, as someone who has recently watched every episode of all 30 years (though some only exist in reconstruction form) I would definitely recommend you start with the beginning of the modern show and go forward.

Once you've done so, come back here or message me, and we'll/I'll be happy to recommend some "sample" shows from each doctor, throughout the run, to give you the feel for how the show worked in various eras. You may... [more]

On the other hand.... You could also do an interesting mix and match....

Watching the new show interspersed with episodes from the old that tell related stories.... Especially since, for the most part, there's no harm in jumping around the old series, even though i would watch the new in order...

Start with "Spearhead from Space", which was a "meet the third doctor" story from 1970, with Autons as the villains, then start the... [more]

(because I'm bored, decided to continue with my last thought.)

Okay, here's my suggestion for watching the new series and still learning about the history, seeing its roots, and helping you decide which old ones you'll want to focus on watching.

Watch, "Spearhead from Space (1970)" before "Rose", for the Third Doctor, and Autons,

Then continue on watching the new series in order, but... [more]

You know what? Watch "The Two Doctors (1985)" before you watch "Time Crash". You'll meet #6, see a "two docs" episode, and met Sontarans, who will be showing up soon anyway in a as-yet unaired ep of the new show. There. now you're covered. I should really stop wasting time on this and run my errands now. Damn you, tractorfeed!

The new series is nothing like Dr. Who.

Just as a side note, I disagree strongly.

This new show IS Doctor Who just as much as the old in m opinion. Same Doctor, same history, same man. Just told differently.

And I'd argue that 2005 DW is no more different from 1988 DW than 1988 is from 1963.
To say the show has morphed from one thing to another to another to another over the years is an... [more]

If we're talking Red Bank, NJ (possible. It was once called "Dead Bank" as well,) it's revitalized and has been referred to as "Hip City" in magazines, etc.

Which, although it does have some cool stuff now, is enough of an overstatement that that nickname is now used mainly ironically. So.. sort of what you're talking about.
