Is it time for MetaFilter consignment?
I'd sure as hell give this a try if we implemented it, though I wonder if we're dense enough in most of the country (actually, world, come to think of it) for it to be useful to many.
I'd like to find out though.

Thanks!
I'm consistently amazed by how above and beyond some people go here for others on MeFi. This question of mine even resulted in a MeMailed explicit transport offer from someone who I've sometimes vehemently disagreed (and sometimes agreed, for that matter) with on MeTa.
(An offer I won't be needing after all, but how fantastically awesome is that?)
Not to invoke a Haley Joel Osment movie, but this just encourages people to pay it forward.... [more]

Frankly, konolia, I think Brand New Day only goes so far, and I think U.N. Owen is well past that point. As far as I am concerned, she is persona non grata. This is not my decision, obviously, but I think there's a point where someone has disrespected a community enough that they are best shoved out the door for good.
You say, well, maybe she's changed. And you know? You're right, and you are indeed an excellent example of that.

You know, I really have to agree with the point that, while konolia's phrasing was a bit "I have all the answers, kids", it surely got made into a much bigger thing than it would have been had it been posted by someone else.

especially given that your posting history illustrates that your "do unto others" credo has its certain glaring limits.
Well, U.N. Owen is probably straight, so there's a clear difference there.

That's true, but it's, er, a cross she has to bear. If you're going to spend a significant amount of time pissing people off with ex cathedra judgments, you have to take the consequences.
A fair point. Speaking for no one but myself, I guess I just don't see this particular comment as egregious as some others apparently do. Maybe I'm just missing something, but take that as you will. Likewise with Jessamyn's reaction to what, to me, was obviously a... [more]

Actually, I think that hotel looks cool as hell. That second pic in the article is beautiful. Now, in place.. I dunno. maybe it'd just seem like you were in a hole in the ground. But I'm quite impressed by the concept.
And I say, mrzarquon, ask the friend which they'd prefer. Safe or risky. Unless it's a date friend, in which case, take the safe one if it's a new relationship, the riskier one if you're further along.

The return of Lee Adama and company almost makes up for having to go with Captain Jack Harkness' crew for a while.
And obviously not spoilers, merely guesses, but I want them on record when I turn out to be right:
1) Lee is a Cylon.
2) When we reach Earth? It'll be well in the past.

I keep going back to when the Leoben said "Adama is a Cylon." We all just ASSUMED he meant Bill, and then that he was just screwing with people. But why did we assume Bill Adama?
(An obvious flaw there being that it seems that the rank and file cylons wouldn't know who is and isn't, but it could still be a clue from the writers....)
But I'm just spitballing. It's my theory.

Hey John Kenneth Fisher, you maybe should add this thread to your profile page of historic threads (because of the U N Owen business, not the longboatingosity).
You're absolutely right. That list isn't done yet (probably never will bem but you know what I mean), but once I do the next wave, i'll add the UN Owen highlights, plus this one. Feel free to flood this to 2000 with more key history threads I should add :-)

Go to BBQ. It's made for this. AskMe is not. Matt's at the zoo.
True, but with this change, I see no reason it COULDN'T be brought back into the site. All of the objections to it seem to no longer be valid, if we're starting to implement customization (even if it's in basic stages at this point)

Just because the MyAsk interface is there, doesn't mean most people will use it. What you get, then, is still the same problem of crap questions cluttering up the front page.
Hence off by default. Let people select them if they want them. I will, many people will. more probably won't.

There's a long history behind discouraging chatfilter on AskMe, not because we hate what if questions but because explicitly condoning it on the site is a path to a great big messy useless future for AskMe.
Is that still valid though if it's explicitly labeled and opt-in? I can see that when ask me was a monolithic entity, that chipping away at it with goofiness injures the whole, but a specific category seems to contain it quite well, in my opinion,... [more]

Sexism debate, displaced.
Besides, I think the "what if it was about men" test is actually a pretty good way of diagnosing sexism.
Yep. Am I really the only guy who wouldn't be offended in any way if an FPP, posted by someone who found men attractive, mentioned offhand that a specific man was attractive?

I have never seen an otherwise on-topic thread here about a man derailed into a conversation about whether he's hot enough to screw. That's the sexism.
Wouldn't the sexism come into play if they were not allowed to? Go right ahead, neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket.

For everybody cracking out with the "would anybody be mad if they said it about a man?" you need to make the real comparison. How would you feel about the poster if the [more inside] was "And half these programmers make more than 100,000 a year, and they're single! Geek Crush!"?
um.. no, that still doesn't strike me as offensive in any way... Did you really think it would? Cause I'm not sure what would be offensive about that in the slightest.
