The Front Page Post stood on the Blue
And the snarks they were within
And the Talker posts they did accuse
'Not the best of the web'
Then we clicked and shook as we had a look
At the page where the comments lay
So Metafilter made one more 'tempt
To cover this all again
But fifteen minutes later
Some folks... [more]

Tar who with the what now?
I broke down my thoughts about the P/Virt Experiment here. Those four stories that Brandon links to encapsulates the entirety of what I received.
Looking back, it was a frustrating experience. It feels like many of the people who pushed for a certain setting (and did a lot of good work developing said setting on the wiki) didn't actually write anything. Maybe they spent their juices on the setting work (I know if I get... [more]

Pony Request: All-time favorites.
It would be nice to have some sort of trackback/referrer for favorites, though. Every so often, the Wheel story gets a shout-out like above (Thanks, Deathalicious!) and a quick flurry of favorites ensues. I then blush and spend a few minutes trying to find out who's talk'n 'bout me on the internets. Now that everyone has had time to be suitably hilarious, poignant, and wise, it'd be cool to see where people are coming from to get to some of our older gems.
I have no idea... [more]

Metafilter - lessons learned from the BB problem?
When I see this, I like to imagine that my functions are returning an actual void; something without mass, shape, color, or volume. While some may be disturbed to come face-to-face with the void on a daily basis, I find myself to be comforted by its presence. It's as if, by creating code, I'm somehow shaping the void, and thus defining the areas where it is not.
Huh, whenever I think about the word 'void' I start thinking about... [more]

Happy Mefi-day to me!
My new hammock has just arrived. I hope to mount it on rollerskates and be pulled by a team of dogs I have trained just for this purpose. I shall have other dogs that fetch me beer and slippers. Still others shall sing me songs of their native lands. One shall lick peanut butter off my toe. They shall be polite dogs and will never growl or cry. Their collars will be made of brass with small bells made of seashells that they picked themselves. I shall instruct them in an arcane language of my own... [more]

Boston Meetup!
Banjo and I just got back from our SECRET BOSTON MEETUP. How secret was it? So secret that Horace Rumpole never even saw us wave at him! I think he was lost in Hal Sparks' dreamy, dreamy eyes (or ripped, ripped forearms, whicheva).

If you are ever walking the Freedom Trail and are heading from the Old Granary Burial Ground to the King's Chapel Cemetery, stop beneath the giant ONE sign at Beacon Street before you cross over to the graveyard. Turn and face the building behind you. Look to the alcove and wave at the second floor office to the alcove's left.
Congratulations, you've just had a Boston Meetup!

I'll race! To feel the wind in my face! And I'll race! To feel like I own this place!
I just picked up my copy of GTAIV thanks to the help of Mayor Menino's Boston Morality Squad (with an assist from the Petty FYE Powertrip Brigade). I had not pre-ordered or anything, but decided at the last minute that I could use a stout metal box and other swag that comes with the Special Edition.
So I rolled down Beacon Hill to the local FYE. This FYE is one of the closest places to City Hall where you can buy video games. The FYE Line Wrangler on patrol made folks... [more]

I sent off a reminder to CBC that we're enroute. 30 people is way too many to seat, so we'll use superior numbers to grab stools and tables as needed.
I have also updated my profile to contain my horrible visage in a beer-drinking state to hopefully aid recognition.

It's about a 15-20 minute walk I think?
I just walked by on my walk from Beacon Hill to Somerville and it took me 10 minutes tops. But then again, I knew where I was going.
For folks coming out of the T, walk down the street (Main) away from the river. When you see a weird looking Frank Gehry building on your left, turn right (on to Galileo). Turn left at the next intersection. You will cross some train tracks. Stay on the... [more]

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up, I would have missed this due to the long weekend.

If we know how many people are coming, we could always try to reserve the back room at John Harvard's or something.

The food is decent pub food and the beer is pretty good depending on what they have on tap that day (sadly, the Midwinter Imperials will be all gone). I've been in the function room before and its decor is about the same as the rest of the bar.
But the time limit of two hours and the 'sit down dinner' lockdown is hella lame.
I know that people can reserve tables in the bar area, as I have been chased out from beneath the Cam Nealy window more... [more]

Also worth considering is Cambridge Common or Christopher's. Both have good food (Christopher's is pretty veggie-friendly, too) and nice draft lists. I have been part of large parties at Cambridge Common before and things worked well. I expect Christopher's, which has an extra floor and is owned by the same folks, could do the same.

I just sent off a query to Christopher's, which I think satisfies Jess's requirements. It is near the T (Porter Square), within walking distance from Harvard down Mass Ave, has a good beer list and rotating draft specials, veggie/organic options (Buffalo Tofu!), and pretty spacious.

The CBC/Flattop option may be the best option. I'll drop CBC an email about 25 or so people for an informal event.

CBC has responded promptly! It looks like they'd be happy to give us some space by the bar. I'm following up to make sure that includes tables, as 25 standing Mefites milling about may get old, fast. Plus I want to make sure folks can sit and eat as they desire.
One thing, though - what time should I set things up for? That is, if the location meets with people's approval?

Sure, 7-7:30 makes sense. I'd likely be there earlier than that (assuming I'm defacto contact person) so folks not going to the con can swing by earlier.
Do we have an ending time? Or should we just pencil in mysterious '???s'?

Awesome. I hope you all do "Groups of people who walk side-by-side" soon. Nothing gets me enraged like posses of wannabe Reservoir Dogs forcing me off the sidewalk and into the street to dodge out of their way. I'm going to try to comment with a "Thanks for posting this!" in reply to posts that I enjoy. If enough people do that, then it gets a bit harder for the snark to get piled on. Yeah, I know this is what favorites can be used for, but given that people favorite for different reasons, it's nice to have the explicit positive feedback.
On the other hand, I'll just skip replying to threads that are not my cup of tea.

Have someone bring some blue ribbon and some tags. If the party moves on from DT, tie the ribbon to something outside the bar attached to a tag that has the time of exodus and the location moved on to. Tie another ribbon around something near the new location. If the party moves again, attach another exodus tag. Rinse and repeat!
