Spider-Man and Mary Jane are no more. But what broke up their 20 year long marriage? The stress of being a superhero? An illicit tryst with Ben Riley coming to light? Nope. The
Devil made them do it in order to save Aunt May's life. Comic Book Resources has been running a series of interviews with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada (
1,
2,
3,
4,
5pending) who wrote and penned the issue as its normal writer, J. Michael Straczynski (his take
here) refused to do so. So that distant howl you've been hearing all week is actually the sound of a thousand comic fans
gnashing their teeth and rending their Spidey Underoos.

When they came for the gummy bear, I remained silent; I have cavities. When they came for the red hots, I remained silent; I am allergic to cinnamon. But when they came for the
liquorice allsorts, one man
did not stay silent. And for that Bertie Bassett thanks him.

4th Edition is Coming... Eight years after the release of Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition (and only four years after the release of 3.5), Wizards of the Coast announced today that 4th Edition will be on the shelves in May of 2008. Back in 2000, the release of 3rd Edition launched a boom (and
bust) of secondary adventures published under the
Open Gaming License. Back then, a gamer couldn't swing their boffer sword without hitting a start-up
game company with d20 content. Contrast that to this month when the very
last issues of venerable
Dragon and
Dungeon magazines hit the shelves.

"Prepare to embrace your creators in the stygian haunts of hell, barbarian", gasped the first soldier.
"Only after you have kissed the fleeting stead of death, wretch!" returned Grignr.
I cannot believe that I once considered my life complete having never been exposed to SciFi convention mainstay and possibly Worst Science Fiction Story Ever Written,
The Eye of Argon.
Previously mentioned on Metafilter in comments, it is time for Jim Theis' magnum opus have its day in the Blue. If you can make it through the story without laughing (most can't), there's always the
MST3K'd version to attempt as well! (

In the peaceful Sicilian village of Salem, a dark presence is about to make itself known. For years, the family based crime organization known as the Mafia has been establishing itself in the foundation of the community. Until now, the naive citizens have been unaware of the evil among them. Tonight, however, the Mafia makes its move. Tonight, someone will die, and until the Mafia has eliminated all opposition, the innocent will continue to die. Unless, of course, the Mafia is destroyed(PDF) first...

The
premise of Marvel Comic's
Civil War storyline is that after a hero-related disaster, the government decides to force all superheroes to register, causing a split in the hero community. While heroes debate and decide which side to join, fans
debate whether or not the cross-over series is actually any good. Clearly,
Christopher Bird falls squarely on one side and has attempted to "improve" the story by starting a project to edit the dialogue of the series.

"I shall clasp my hands together and bow to the corners of the world." Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart won the World Fantasy Award in 1985. Set in a China that never was, it tells the tale of Master Li Kao, who has a slight flaw in his character, and Number Ten Ox as they uncover the mysteries of a cursed town, a terrible duke, and a beautiful woman. Originally intended to be the first in a series of seven,
Bridge of Birds spawned only two sequels. The reclusive author explains some of his influences and poor luck
here. Also, for those of you familiar with the story, the original draft of
Bridge of Birds (
PDF version) is available online!

Jack Thompson, well-known anti-videogame violence crusader, recently submitted a
modest proposal to the game industry: Make an ultraviolet game of his creation featuring, but not limited to, urinating on the brain stems of slain fictional game industry members, and he will donate $10,000 dollars to charity. Of course people
leapt at the chance, and of course,
Thompson backed out. So then Gabe and Tycho of
Penny Arcade donated the $10,000 dollars to
charity themselves in Thompson's name. Thompson's response?
Call the cops! No wonder the National Institute on Media and the Family
distanced themselves from him.

Lexicon: An RPG
- The basic idea is that each player takes on the role of a scholar, from before scholarly pursuits became professionalized (or possibly after they ceased to be). You are cranky, opinionated, prejudiced and eccentric. You are also collaborating with a number of your peers -- the other players -- on the construction of an encyclopedia describing some historical period (possibly of a
fantastic world).

Rate My Professor!
A searchable database of student ratings of their college professors. In what must be a wonderful reflection of the current status of the American and Canadian higher education systems, the ratings include entries for how easy the professor is and, of course, how hot they are. So click around, visit your alma mater, and let that jerk who almost flunked you in freshman comp feel your wrath!

Dunegon Majesty!
In what must be an accomplishment worthy of The Gygax himself, this guy found four girls willing to not only play D&D, but brave enough to be filmed while doing so. The fact that they're also willing to dress up as their characters is just icing on the cake. Be sure to check out the
teaser video and learn a little something about courage!

Taphophiles, Rejoice!
Northstar Galleries offers a collection of grave images from around the world. Of particular interest is an
essay and
gallery on "Sensuality in Memorial Art." But if potentially NSFW stone nudes are not your thing, you can search the
Farber Gravestone Collection's archive of over thirteen thousand image database of pre-1800 American gravestones, more than enough for a melancholy afternoon.
