I wonder how many people here read the second page of the article. Apparently the girl has self-harmed in jail, to the point of tying a sweater around her neck so she couldn't breathe. She's in jail with youths who are "most violent or most habitual" and it's a "last resort" facility.

It doesn't justify pushing someone (though she claims the monitor pushed her first, which is worth considering). But it's not like she was some wild and reckless youth who was trying to get in the school to cause trouble. Jesus, I've never said it was nobody's fault but hers. No one here's said that. Way to totally fucking misread everything we're saying.

What I'm saying is - she was given a totally bum deal. What she did do, wasn't that bad, and did not deserve that punishment. Yeah, she needs to learn to straighten up but one extremely biased account either way of a push by a girl with no prior history and who happens to be FOURTEEN YEARS OLD is in no way compatible with jail time.... Buying your CalTrain or MUNI tickets from the machine gives back change in a random assortment of Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. It's normal to me, coming from Canada, but I was even at the train station and gave a homeless man a Susan B. Anthony coin when he asked me for a dollar for the train, and he looked at it very curiously and I had to reassure him that it was a dollar, and the machine would take it for a ticket.

Why do they hate the West Coast so much? Couldn't they air the Stewart-Colbert show now at 8 (instead of a rerun from yesterday) and then replay it at 11? Boo.

In other news, where I can find out about propositions and if they passed? I'm a midterm newbie (and couldn't vote anyway as a Permanent Resident) but I'm awfully anxious to find out about 85 (parental notifications) here in California.

This is so fantastic. I just sent it to my husband who's sitting on the other side of the room, and bust a gut laughing when his phone rang immediately after I hit send. He didn't seem to find it as funny, but, man.

Who else to send it to, though - has to be a cellphone or you could hit anyone in the house, and then the joke is toast.

I love the Canadian Tire Guy, sob. I don't own a home, and have no use for almost anything he pitches, and yet I'll watch an ad and think "huh, I could use a new pressure washer." I don't buy it, but no other ads have ever been able to do that to me.

The whole thing has really been the best of the web this week; other people are posting their compositions as well and they're all awesome. The main "Tom Baker Says" site also has awesome (and awesomely bad) DW jokes, like "what goes bang thud?" Must be heard to be believed.

I heard about the BT thing a few weeks ago and was hoping people would play with it and put results online; I can't use the service here, drats.

I have to say I'm a little surprised by the timing of this post to MeFi - because no one was around on Saturday, or what? Anyway, I first saw this story at 4:30am yesterday, when they said only a hundred dead (and my sleep-deprived brain was stupidly happy about that). Last night when I went to bed the numbers had been holding steady at 3000 for quite a while. Now, 9 hours later, it's at 20K. Unbelievably shocking.

I'm in Urban Dead as well, there's a pretty large group of Monkeyfilterites playing, we have a board and a chat and a super-nifty-keen editable barricades map. So that's really fun. We've been protecting Giddings Mall in Pitneybank, where a lot of the PA people are holed up, only we're on the down-low as per the wiki (which was basically cribbed from our popular wiki, damnit!) I too thought that the title of the album was Plans : It takes a measure of bravery—and a bucketload of self-assuredness—to dive headfirst into the big(ger) time with an album full of mid-tempo, mostly gentle songs about death and longing, even if your band is called Death Cab For Cutie. Damnit, that would have been awesome, and the thread would have been worth it to find out that. Pity.

I'm thinking it's a good litmus test. If you say to someone "what do you think of a title called Snakes on a Plane?", and they're all "eurgh, that sucks" then you know they're a bit boring, but if they're all "snakes on a muthafuckin' PLANE!" then you know that person's a keeper.

When I first saw the CBC page, I thought they'd added the wrong photo to the story - dude, I thought she was 28 or so in that photo. She is hot.

That aside, a very neat choice, she seems very interesting, though I have to agree that another CBC person is a bit blah. Then again, we're going to have the hottest head of state anywhere. Go us!

Then there's Hull, Quebec (now rebranded as Gatineau, but we all know better). You can stand and look at Ontario, right across the river, but yet while in Hull everyone (1) speaks French, and (2) smokes. And then when the government offices close at 4:30, the place empties out. Good times.
