Mountain View, CA meetup, 20 Apr 2007
Oh. Maybe. I really should since it's right around the corner from my house. I might not be free, though. Anyway, this is me, thinking "huh, that's an idea" and I might show.

This is the second–most prominant story in today's...
I know I don't mind reposting of prominant stories, because such things don't exist. Prominent stories, on the other hand...I don't mind either. I wouldn't have seen a feature story from the NYT because I don't read it, though I do follow American news. I read feature stories in my dead tree copy of the Globe and Mail, or in magazines, or, when people post them to Metafilter.
Newsfilter is less useful as a post, but I don't mind it too much. Opinionfilter falls... [more]

I'd be shocked if this was a self-link; I've met Russell McOrmand before, and he's much, much more web-savvy than this puckersmc-too long name seems to be. At the very least, the actual blog entry by Russell is likely not related to the username here; perhaps the poster is affiliated with digital-copyright.ca generally, I don't know. That would be self-linkish but not quite so bad, I guess.
And it's fun to do Canadian politics here, yay! On the thread's topic - the... [more]

Okay, I know this isn't the point...
I haven't been posting here, but wanted to say that I'm so glad this worked out, and that ColdChef, you've been an absolute hero this whole time. I'm so proud to know you even a little bit. And rachelNOLA, I'm so glad your mom's alright.
We all need some good news at a time like this.

Ah, I wish - I do need to get to Montreal very soonishly so I can visit my grandmother, and I'm only in Ottawa, but tomorrow's no good (leaving aside that we don't have a car right now.)
Have fun! Eat some bagels!

So I'm in Halifax, NS, Canada for work and I...
I used to live there, but we never had a meetup. I'm sure there are a few other Haligonian MeFites but I can't find a thread on it like I thought there was. If you're willing to jump 'filters, MonkeyFilter has a rather sizable Maritime population for such a small userbase, but again, can't find the post. No google-fu for me tonight.

Dreama is on Jeopardy tonight, on now! (I think)...
It was great - she did a really good job, was leading for most of it. And she said "let's make it a true daily double, Alex!" which earns her my eternal respect and awe.
There's a photo of her with Alex on her flickr account.
It was the weirdest ending we've ever seen on Jeopardy, the winner only got $1200! Great show though, very fun to watch.

Mine, and oddly enough, even though I rarely use it, I was at a lecture at school the other day, where Michael Geist was giving a talk on "what's happening online" (groan) and he demonstrated flickr by going to a screenshot of the Ottawa tag - and there were my photos from the February MeFi/MoFi meetup. Got a good laugh out of the crowd by pointing out they were mine. Weird stuff.... [more]

Hey! I'll have you know, amber, that I was the one who suggested a shoutout for you, knowing that you love Canada. This is the thanks I get? Harrumph. ;)
I didn't write that sign, I just volunteered to hold it. Big difference. Plus, I completely disavow the hockey sign, being a die-hard Leafs fan. So, y'know, I'm safe, right?

And some more - a small set, more Monkeyfilter oriented. And since that's my personal flickr account, y'all can see my Mexico trip photos too, if you like. Which at least has more flattering photos of myself than any of the ones taken last night, urgh.
Re Toronto: my folks are in Brampton, I'm allowed to slag Toronto all I want. I still cheer for the Leafs though.

I can't understand why someone wouldn't understand that comment. I mean, it was a bit long and could have probably withstood some pruning, but his point was clear, and I thought quite nicely written.
If that's gobbledygook, well, I'm amazed. Still, not really a big deal. Just thought I'd let hank_14 know that it's not as bad a comment as people are making it out to be. I might not agree with everything you said in it, but it was certainly plainly understandable. Cheers.

Thanks, Matt - I appreciate that you were so thoughtful about it in the first place, and were then willing to reconsider afterwards when you had even more info. It's exceptionally classy.

So yeah, suicide girls. After some teeth gnashing,...
I do have to say something now that I was alerted to the fact that the photos are randomly chosen out of 29. For example, what Arch Stanton says above may be true of some of the photos, but as was pointed out earlier, #6 pretty much shows nipple, and some of the others have girls in lingerie, or quite nude.
Many of these photos are really, really close to the line of having nudity (and I don't think nudity is required for something to be sexual, anyway). I think... [more]

I posted on MoFi, so we'll see how many more we get from there.
7pm on the 18th sounds great, on my part. I might bring my husband too, he's not on MeFi but he blogs; does that count? ;)
On preview: eep, sorry if people don't want the Monkeys...I think there's only 4 or 5 of us, and so I don't think we'll swell the numbers too badly.

And here I was contemplating my first MeTa post to call you out, jonmc. For fuck's sake, would it kill you to lay off for once? You jumped all over tkchrist's first comment when it was really just a forgettable outburst. The only other comments on it were by people who were ignoring the substance completely - as they should.

I'm not saying that he didn't say stupid things. In particular, the aggressive/potentially violent comment was really bad, joking or not. The thing is, if you had just let well enough alone for once, none of that would have come up. He had done nothing specific to you but yet you baited him repeatedly, and refused to back down after concessions.
I'd say both of you are cranky and could use a nice little time-out. My acknowledgement of his role... [more]

What would Jessamyn's profile page have to do with anything? She didn't get to change it because she has admin rights; anyone can do that. (Besides, I think it's really pretty and has a cute photo of her on it!)
Jessamyn's been proven to be a very sober, rational voice on Metafilter and I think she'll do a great job helping out. The different timezones thing is a huge bonus, too. If mathowie had to share power with anyone, I think she'd be my very first choice. Now... [more]

So would zelphi have been banned if he'd said she has her head up her ass?
I'll bet not. I'll bet it wouldn't have even been noticed.
That's because it wouldn't have been about her gender, it would have been about her actions. Saying she has her head up her ass means she's being dumb/blind; saying she has sand in her vagina means she's being an dumb/blind bitch and a dumb/blind bitch because she's a woman. There's no... [more]

The question is which user you think went ballistic. For me, it was 327.ca who seemed to totally lose it. dancingbaptist apologized several times, made some good contributions, and ended up getting hounded out of the place. (Including by you, jonmc, who jumped into the fray late with nary a word on the topic, instead just more hounding of db).

Oh for goodness' sake, without saying anything else on the topic, it's estabished that goatse isn't cool on Metafilter. Not cool. Just because you want to wind up Konolia doesn't mean you can pretend it isn't, or that she's some sort of freak to not want to see it, or is imposing her will on MeFi as a whole. MeFi doesn't tolerate goatse postings; end story.

I think most MoFites these days would argue with your choices, given the good ones we still have there (and the fact that *lots* of us joined in April!)

Probably just fuelling the fire, but one way to get less political posts would be to respond to the non-political ones. I'm probably just bitter because I posted something I thought was interesting lately and it got one freaking reply. I like LJ because it's so easy to keep up with people via friends' lists. And I don't really take it seriously enough to have an actual blog; I just write about this and that and comment in my friends' journals. And avoid quizzes like the plague, don't worry. :)
