Home Server: Best Bang for the Buck?
I plan on installing Asterisk on my alix1c pretty soon. From what I've been able to read it should be up to the task and it only draws about 5W. Currently I'm running Asterisk on an Intel D201GLY but I don't like the fan.

The alix1c has a 44 pin IDE connector on it so you can use laptop style components. Right now I have a normal 40 pin IDE DVD drive connected to a 40 to 44 pin adapter and an external power supply. It works fine for installing stuff. The alix1c only has one IDE connector, it's kind of designed to boot from a compact flash card. So if you want to have a 20gb hard drive and a DVD drive one of them is going to be USB.

Please help me decide - do you own a Nokia N880 or 770?
I have no complaints about the audio quality of my N800 or 770, the little speakers on the N800 actually sound pretty good considering how small they are. I am also pleased with video playback, the only caveat being I convert my videos before viewing. In fact lately I've been using my N800 to watch most of my shows. The screen is really nice. I like having an xterm and ssh available and knowing anywhere I have a cell signal or wifi I can get to my machines.
For me the... [more]

Radio Scanner Recomendations
You can get a lot of radio for $500. Your location will be a factor in what kind to buy. Lots of public agency's are changing to trunked radio systems. Search google for your city and "freq" to get an idea what kind of systems are in your area.
I like Icom, I have a Icom ic-r2, the current equivalent model is a ic-r5. Make sure and get the software, it makes programming the device a snap.... [more]

Will I regret a Celeron?
You don't mention the length of the warranty. In my opinion the warranty is one of the most important items purchased with a new laptop. I've had good luck with IBM's warranty department in the past and haven't heard any horror stories yet since Lenovo took over operations.
The R series seem to typically have one year warranties while the T and X series seem to have 3 year warranties. I wouldn't buy an R series personally. My roommate bought an R series (against my... [more]

Unconventional transportation
This guy is circumnavigating the globe without making use of air travel. He crossed the Atlantic on a cruise ship and will be crossing the Pacific by freighter.

Breaker, breaker, tell me what CB to buy.
This doesn't answer your question about a CB transmitter, but I am happy with my Icom R2. It's a "scanner" or wideband receiver. I can pick up CB transmissions with it and a whole lot more. It's a great little radio, you can program it with your computer, it's tiny, sounds good and they go pretty cheap on ebay since it's been replaced by more recent models by the manufacturer.... [more]

How can I get my monitor screen clean without streaks?
Here's how I clean my laptop screen. The first thing I do is fix myself a drink in a clean glass with lots of ice. Then I get a microfiber cloth and dip the corner in some 91% isopropyl alcohol and rub that around the screen trying to get all the oily bits off. Might have to do it a couple of times, the alcohol evaporates pretty quick. Then I wipe another corner of the cloth on the distilled water that has condensed on the outside of my glass and use that to rinse off any residue. Semi-vigorous... [more]

Arthur Murray, where are you?
Not sure if it'll help, but I was experiencing the same error with OS X Finder and my Samba shares. Tuned out to be an ownership issue with the directories I was sharing. They were owned by root, I chowned them to the user I login as normaly and everything worked.

iPod Shuffle Won't Charge
I think you need to have the "use iopd as external drive" option checked while it's plugged in with USB. I have a 30gig photo, and if I stop the USB mass storage device associated with my ipod, it stops charging even though it's still plugged in.
