Ask post: Swim, Walk, Fly?
The reason a lot of people have to get their wisdom teeth removed is because our jaws are getting smaller. Of course, with the orthodontists we've evolved, we've removed the selective pressure for individuals without those teeth.

Ask post: Working from home
If their concession to you working from home is that they'll let you do it if they don't have to pay you that day, then I don't think you're going to make much headway with any argument.

But that said, why should they want you to work from home? "It would be better for me" is not a good reason to them, what's the benefit? Maybe you could make the case that you'll get more done, or maybe you'd be willing to clock an extra half hour every day or something like... [more]

No. Don't underestimate the effect your physical work environment has on your overall well being and peace of mind.

I'm fairly convinced that it's impossible to do quailty work in a cubicle environment.

Ask post: Looking for a homework submission script.
The thing to do is probably make a program (not script) that will accept the files on the command line, copy them to a given directory and email you the event (so you know if anyone tries any funny business). Make the directory readable/writable only to you and make the program setuid.

Ask post: PureVision contact lenses: better than the competition?
I got contacts for the first time ever about 2 months ago, and my doctor recommended PureVision. I have nothing to compare them to, but I have one toric lens, which means it's thicker than normal, and I have had no problems, I can wear them comfortably all day.

Being new to contacts and nervous, I clean them pretty throughly at night and haven't had any tears yet (but then, I'm only on my second set).

Ask post: Intractable math / physics puzzle: Light in a perfectly mirrorred sphere.
I would imagine when the light hits a non-perfectly-reflective surface (you), some of the light will be absorbed as heat. So over time, you will absorb (as heat) all the chemical energy in the flashlight batteries.

Also of note, if we assume the sphere is reflective to all radiation, the heat put out by your metabolic processes will build up inside too. If this is dangerous to you probably depends on the size of the sphere.

As to what you... [more]

Ask post: How do I encrypt my http traffic so my company can't read it?
My reading of those product pages leads me to believe that you make an SSL connection to their proxy, then the proxy makes another SSL connection to your actual destination.

Ask post: In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is team leader
Joel has some thoughts.

Figuring out how long it's going to take you to do something is a skill that needs to be learned. You're going to have to ask your developers for time estimates, and if they're wrong, call them on it. Don't pressure them to work faster, pressure them to get their time estimates right (again, I stress, not by working hard to stick to the estimate, by being right about the estimate in the first place).... Also, should I feel guilty about not writing enough code?
Holy balls no! You're not a developer anymore. You're a lead developer. Your main job (IMO, your boss might have different ideas) is to enable your people to turn out their best work. That means scheduling their tasks and shielding them from all the crap from upper management and other departments. Your motto should be "tell them to talk to me".
(At least, this is the manager *I'd* like to work for)

There used to be one on Yonge, south of St. Clair, on the west side.

Ask post: How do I rearrange my data to make the best use of a new hard drive?
First, are all the jumpers set correctly on both drives?

Second, does your motherboard have a second IDE channel? Try leaving the 80GB as master where it is, and putting the new drive as master on the second channel.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Capn at 9:46 AM on May 2, 2006
The easiest way to see if you have a second channel is to just open up the case and see if there's another socket next to where the drive cable currently plugs in. I really suggest trying that configuration (each drive set as master on it's own cable). I don't know much about Dells, but most motherboards have two channels.

But if you don't want to do that, try changing the jumbers on the drives from cable select to master and slave.

Sorry, but... [more]

Do you have an iPod dock? Try playing through the line out on that. If that play's fine, then you know the headphone jack is the problem, otherwise, it's the innards.

Ask post: Python - Shell Environment
You can do this in bash by "sourcing" the script instead of running it (assuming your current shell is bash too). This means the commands are executed in the current shell, instead of starting a new shell (whose enviroment disappears when the script ends). To source a script, put a period then a space before it, a la:

$ . ./myscript.sh
posted to Ask Metafilter by Capn at 12:20 PM on April 7, 2006
The problem is that, in UNIX each process has its own totally independent set of environment variables. When a shell starts another program, it sets up this new process' environment by copying its own (*), and then that process' if it starts other processes, could in turn pass on any inherited environment variables, but there's no way for these changes to move in the other direction, from parent to child, and there's no way for changes to the parent's environment made after the child is... Ask post: ToothEvolutionFilter: Why are human teeth so poorly "designed"?
The decay thing is directly attributable to agriculture and specifically sugar consumption. We've always had the plaque bacteria, but until we started consuming massive (relatively speaking) amounts of sugar in everything we eat, they didn't produce enough acidic waste products to be a huge problem.

except urllib2.URLError:
print line, ' NOT ACTIVE'

except ValueError:

Spend way too much money on a really good vegetable peeler. "Way too much" is not even that much, for a vegetable peeler, and it is so satisfying to just effortlessly spool the peel off of apples, carrots, taters.

Ask post: Algorithm for file comparison
Ok, so we have list A, and list B. And for two files, x and y, if both x and y are in A and B, and x is after y in A, then x must be after y in B? Correct?

If so I can give you O(2(m+n)):

Using a variation on smackfu's method, stepping down the lists, you can generate a list of all the files in A that are not in B, these are the files that have been deleted. Then do the same thing to get the list of all the files in B that are not in A, this... [more]

Ask post: Is there a mathematical formula relating time and memory?
Yes, you can get a qualatative measure of nostalgias per second (n/s) with the formula
t = 1/m * p
Where p is Proust's Constant, approx 2.14323

Ha ha, just kidding.

What do you mean by "memory" do you mean physical and chemical changes in the brain, or the subjective experience of those changes?

The former is an effect of physics on a physical object, an effect of time, really. The later is a subjective phenomenon.

Ask post: Big moon, little faith...
What you can do to prove this to yourself is this:

The next time you see a big moon near the horizon, stick your arm all the way out and measure the moon with your thumb. Then lean back so your arm's pointing up at the sky, and imagine a moon the same size on your thumb-ruler up there. Hey, it's much smaller now!.

Simpler beasts overall than women, men respond well to consistency because it enhances predictability, and are creatures of habit.
This condescending and patronizing attitude, displayed in a woman, frustrates and repluses me, personally, more than almost anything else.
