Ask post: Bonehead left his chinese food out
This might be the first time I have ever thought, "don't eat it" in response to one of these questions. My limit is pretty high, but a whole workday at 80+ degrees? If you do decide to eat it, stop and pick up some Pedialyte and real soft 2-ply on the way home, and maybe a paperback.

MeFi post: People who live without TV
the DVR ... bittorrent-downloaded episodes

Oh yeah. Without these, my TV would only be for watching baseball and playing video games. I really don't understand the "TV is evil! it ruins homes!" worldview--there is entertainment out there that won't destroy your mind--but without the option of timeshifting and ad-skipping, it's completely unwatchable.

I still miss whole innings of... [more]

Music post: Hating music
I listen to it all the time, it comes into my head at all hours of the day and has since I was 11, and I force myself to stay in bed most nights when an idea comes to me just before I drift off.

This.

I don't think I ever hate music, although sometimes music makes me hate myself. Sometimes there's really just too much music in my head and I can't get it out. I've got hundreds of sixteen-bar sketches lying around that I can't... [more]

MeFi post: The Bechdel Test
There's an article linked in the site 3bm links discussing why screenwriters are, essentially, taught to fail the Test. Part of the argument:
According to Hollywood, if two women came on screen and started talking, the target male audience’s brain would glaze over and assume the women were talking about nail polish or shoes or something that didn’t pertain to the story.Whe she dismisses as BS, which would be fine if writers were "allowed" to write interesting female... It's harder than you might think to make a movie with no women at all

What about movies with no men? Before I knew the remake of The Women was a remake whose intent was, in fact, an all-female experience, I saw the trailer (before Pineapple Express, which seems like a very odd choice). Within seconds it struck me that something was wrong.

MeFi post: Diddy needs oil
At a certain point--and with a net worth probably approaching half a billion dollars, Diddy has likely reached that point--a quarter of a million to fuel your jet has got to be worth avoiding the commercial hassle, hasn't it? Even if you're whisked through check-in and security on a rainbow-powered flying carpet that fires freshly-baked cookies directly into your maw, commercial air travel is still a pretty miserable experience. General aviation, you're probably going to leave on time, can... [more]

MeFi post: Boom!
I'm stuck on 42 (which is made difficult by how randomly the boxes fall), but I just did 33 again for kicks. You get so many bombs, it's really not so hard. It should only take 3, maybe 4, to get to the top-right platform. Bomb yourself up and slight-right to get onto the left platform, and then from there, it's only 2 or 3 bombs to the top-right. Then you've got 6 or 7 to play with to get yourself over the ice. Might take a few tries, but it's not so bad.

Yeah, this games is great, but I'm stuck on 47 now, too. There's no rhyme or reason. I can't even brute force my way to the exit (which I've done in more than one previous level).

Hm. Actually, that's not so hard. Just had to think about it differently. This is a fantastic timewaster.
posted to MetaFilter by uncleozzy at 11:21 AM on August 29, 2008
For which one? I hinted at 33 above. In 47, I wound up blowing myself straight up off of the right-side platform with a little help.

MeFi post: I just want your extra time, and your... Mix.
This is fantastic. I don't know how anyone else experiences music, but for me, I've always got a song, or part of a song, running through my head. Not a melody, not the idea of a song, but the canonical, according to my memory, recording. I don't have perfect pitch, but I can tune a guitar to within a few cents by thinking about Dave Matthews' "So Much to Say." So when I read one of these, for a song with which I'm familiar, I get the nice treat of being able to hear the song while... [more]

Music post: Here
Golly, that's great. At first I was distracted by the tile-y reverb on the vocal, but then I stopped noticing because the whole thing is so neat. I love the gentle harmonies and, as always, the harmonica.

As an aside, are you doing something to the vocal track that causes some of the big, sibilant esses to slide to the right? (For example, on "see" at 0'35" and "say" at 2'24".) Have I not fully regained the hearing in my left ear yet... [more]

Picture Ozzy Osbourne--bloated, drunk, unstable 80s Ozzy--dressed in tails and a top hat, stirring a bathtub full of bootleg hooch with a rowboat oar. Uncle Ozzy's Olde Tyme Bathtub Gin will make you lose your mind and, maybe, go blind.

MeFi post: Finally, there's a game that just is a database!
(Also via)

I played this off and on for a few days, and it's fun for a bit, but I feel as though the game mechanics are a little bit broken. I understand making it expensive to wage war and cheap to defend oneself, but at a certain point, it becomes really difficult, if not pointless, to attack a well-defended opponent.

Plus, I realize, the accumulation of wealth and empire-building (which seem to be the... [more]

MeFi post: It tastes like burning
Ten years ago, they still had a plant in East Cambridge, right near the Green Line. It was pretty awesome because you could tell what kind of candy they were making by the way the air smelled. (Necco makes a bunch of stuff other than the wafers, including Clark Bars and those chalky, Necco-like Valentine hearts.) Chocolate days were especially tantalizing.

The Cambridge Candy Co. factory was still on Main St., a few blocks away from Necco, last time I... [more]

Cheerios [...] the smell of those oaty death-rings could turn my stomach from fifteen yards away

The smell of Cheerios reminds me of messy babies in church when I was a kid. Apparently, they're so delicious to babies that they'll stop screaming for three, four minutes before they start gumming a few and throwing the paste everywhere. Seriously, if you eat Cheerios and then breathe near me, I will probably retch. Just thinking about the smell makes... [more]

If you want ridiculous flamewars over cheap gear, go ask at Gearslutz, because that's their forte (you might get some really good recommendations, too; a few guys really love the low-priced KEL HM-1 for drum OHs).

If it were me, though, I'd spend that $400 on blocking out a day or two at a studio. Especially when you're not close-micing the snare, you want to record in the best room you can manage.... [more]

My good ear digs this. (I didn't even notice the buzz until I read chococat's comment; I figured it was just my head.) The repeating patterns and harmonies and off-kilter rhythms and phasey guitar are really nice. Also the bass stabs.

I'll ask the other ear what it thinks when it decides to open up again.

Ask post: When gas goes above 4 bucks a gallon, it's the premium cars who hurt the most...
Try it for a couple of weeks and see if you like it. On that (high-compression, turbocharged, if it's the 1.8T) engine, you'll likely experience considerably worse performance, poor fuel economy, and dirtier emissions. Is it worth the $5 a week?

But yeah, it probably won't void the warranty. My car wants 93, and I use it, but the manual says it'll take 89 in a pinch, and I'm sure it'd survive on 87.

Wines are truly great, but they lack range.

There is far greater variety in wine than in beer.

But yeah, I agree with flabdablet: your salivary glands are kicking into gear hardcore and can't get the saliva out fast enough, so it tingles for a bit. You just feel it more when you're high because, well, you're high.

Music post: The Evolution of a Song
This is a cool idea. I like hearing different revisions of the same song. My workflow doesn't, generally, generate multiple versions (with the exception of one song that I've recorded maybe 4 times since 2001 and still haven't gotten right), but I'd dig hearing others'. I think Jofus' spliced-together post works well (although it'd be nice to post where the cuts are, for skipping-and-comparing purposes; I'm very impatient).
