MeFi post: The Palin Mob
But that fact does not make "Booooo" even remotely similar to "Kill him" in any but the most transparently sophistic sense.

No, but it's still junior-high bullshit that has no place in politics. It disgusts me to support any candidate when shit like that is okay. How easy would it be to tell the crowd to quit fucking booing like a bunch of excitable children? Very.

Gun Owners for Obama.

I saw one of those wacked-out Jeeps a couple nights ago--the sort with too many stickers and placards in the windows--with a tremendous sign, covering the back window, reading, "Veterans for Obama." It made me smile.

The "Moms for McCain" sticker I saw, though, just made me furious. May as well be "Moms for Herod."

I don't know why you would fill this awesome, awesome bottle with vodka instead of, you know, an actual beverage. Like whiskey. Maybe some overproof bourbon.

I have had bourbon from a number of novelty bottles, including, but not limited to, football players, basketball players, the Statue of Liberty, and Ben Franklin. Couldn't tell you what kind of bourbon it was, but it survived many years of poor storage just fine.

Particulary if you want to marry that bottle.

Whoa, whoa whoa. I wouldn't go that far without being certain of the inner diameter of the opening.

Don't forget the scene where Chase is about to perform surgery on the patient's penis--without removing the skull, of course--but just as he's about to make an incision, House stumbles into the OR--wearing street clothes, unscrubbed, maybe with a mask hanging around his neck, unworn--grabs the scalpel, instead makes an incision in the patient's abdomen, and removes a teratoma that is, in fact, a perfect likeness of the crystal skull.

MeFi post: 5& 1/2 hour no-knead bread
Which type should I use?

I like 5W30, but you might want to go with canola, or another similarly-light-flavored oil. You're using so little--it's just to keep the dough from drying out--that it really doesn't matter.

suggested using budwieser as the beer in their recipe

You probably do want something light-flavored, though; I suppose something as big as Sam Adams or Fat Tire would be... [more]

(Yes, the chances of getting enough yeast from a bottle of beer to overcome, or even co-exist with, the bread yeast is really small, but it's a possibility you probably want to eliminate in a published recipe.)

I'm suspicious of the claim that 'most' craft beers are bottle conditioned

I think I said "many," but of those that you mention, Rogue in particular certainly are, and I believe most, or all, Stone beers are, as well. Sierra Nevada, too. It's reasonably common for homebrewers to harvest yeast from bottle-conditioned beers (Rogue's "Pacman" strain is particularly popular).

Commercial beers that are... [more]

See, a market crash becomes more entertaining if you've known, and worried yourself sick over, this all along. Also if you can bake bread.

Weird Al, I'll always love you. Even though I made the mistake of letting a friend buy Poodle Hat and then the futher error of copying it, I know you're better than that.

I'm not saying I'll buy the single. But I might preview it.

Guaranteed: he will replace "kissed" with "missed" and write a song about missing his favorite TV show because the Tivo failed.

"Genius In France" is probably the greatest song Weird Al has ever recorded.

It's available on iTunes and YouTube... seems a bit lazy, although I suppose the source material is sort of garbage anyhow. The Hyundai/Sunday rhyme is cute, at least.

Plus, I'd like to point out that White Castle isn't cheap anymore. Fifty-nine cents for a slider? Are you kidding me?

MeFi post: Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants
Okay, so Oasis lifted the first half of the verse, which they repeat what, 32 times? (I skipped around a bit.) I don't want to excuse them for this--they are, as everyone has noted, insufferable as people, and the rest of the song is sort of shit--but it's not as if they lifted the entire song, or even its defining moments (as with Shakermaker).

Plus, She's Electric is one of the greatest songs of all time. Ever. Period.

Poppy tune, sure. Earworm, sure. But man, I just could never bring myself to sing along to it.

Yeah, I'm startlingly easy to please, lyric-wise. But you can't say that, "she's got one in the oven, but it's nothing to do with me" isn't a little satisfying.

I love Halloween. I love horror movies. When I was a kid, I didn't watch Disney movies. I've never seen Snow White, Lady and the Tramp, The Parent Trap. But I sure as hell have seen every Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and dozens, maybe hundreds, of straight-to-video slasher flicks. I don't dig on the new torture porn, though; it's creepy, and there's no joy in it.

Also, Fright Fest at Great Adventure is outstanding... [more]

MeFi post: 17 Years Later Here We Are Entertain Us
I don't really get the "overproduced" claims about Nevermind. I always look at studio albums as just that: a product created in a recording studio. I don't expect a faithful recreation of a live performance, I expect art. Sometimes that means raw, unpolished recordings, but more often, it means carefully-considered decisions at every step. Nevermind is polished, it's got a lot of sheen. But take a listen to Butch Vig's mixes of... [more]

They also probably got a lot of kids to listen to stuff they wouldn't have otherwise

This is exactly it. I can dig on Nirvana, but when they come up in shuffle I'll skip it, except for "On a Plain" and sometimes "Heart-Shaped Box." But in 1990 and 1991, I was listening to Run DMC, to Public Enemy. To Paula Abdul and MC Hammer and god-knows what else. When I taped Nevermind from a CD I rented from the library,... [more]

it didn't feel like it was much more than yet-another rock and roll product

Which is what it was. I don't see how that makes the phenomenon any less important. Just because a tornado didn't mean to take off my roof doesn't mean it didn't. Music doesn't have to be self-conscious art.

For years, I had no idea that the DNA remix of "Tom's Diner" was even a remix. Didn't know "Luka" existed. Turns out Suzanne Vega is pretty cool; all the Measure for Measure blogs are super-neat.

Also, the first MP3 I ever downloaded was, oddly, "Enter Sandman," because it was literally the only song I could find. I couldn't get it to play on my 486 DX/33 without downsampling to 22KHz and playing it in mono. I couldn't... [more]

I love old-timey baseball. That it was acceptable for a player chasing a foul ball to be challenged with bottles, glasses, and a derby hat is mind-blowing. Not that I'd like to see players injured by debris, but come on. These days, you get thrown out of Yankee Stadium for suggesting that Sidney Ponson consider healthier dining options.

MeFi post: Metallica Friday
Do the Metallica covers faithfully recreate all the horrible clipping?

I'd really like to hear a CD copy of this album. Because every clip I've heard is really, really awful. I mean, the music is Metallica, I won't make comment on that, but the audio is just unacceptable. It's like they used the Raw Power remaster as a reference.
posted to MetaFilter by uncleozzy at 6:35 AM on September 23, 2008
I can't be bothered to find the comment right now, but I've made the same argument before, mediocre, and I do believe it. But this album is absolutely not an example of mastering for the device. There's a mile-wide canyon between useful limiting and noise, and from the clips I've heard, this album crossed the gap and then rode about a hundred miles more.

I like this, although I agree it does take far too long to get started. It's also interesting how mundane most of the wishes presented are. Ice cream. Money. More money. It's a long way from Imagine. Interesting that the roughest-looking interviewee wished for an end to violence in New Orleans.
