MeTa post: A question and answer area for people to talk about writing/recording music
(I actually just gave a really long answer to a production question inside a Music thread that probably nobody, including the asker, has actually seen.) I don't necessarily know why this couldn't just be a subcategory or hell, even just a recommended AskMe tag, as mumkin notes. Unless I'm a bit confused about the intent here.

Alright, rockin! I get it. I'll get on this bus, then. Who brought the beer?

MeTa post: suspicious questions?
I noticed a user this morning who seemed a bit suspicious, but there's not much to go on other than his username, unnecessary emoticons, and exactly three rapid-fire comments. Which is why I didn't make a post to MeTa. Or did I?

This thread does, a bit, remind me of my grandma, who spies on her new neighbors constantly. She thinks she's being sneaky, but it must be hilarious to see her peeking out the window all day long. They've... [more]

Mike Mahan has gingivitis

I believe you can also get athlete's foot showering at his place.

Anal Cunt apparently has a song called "Mike Mahan has gingivitis".

They've got a number of songs about Mike, who I believe used to be in the band. I saw Anal Cunt a few years back--2001 or 2002--upstairs at the Middle East in Cambridge. If you haven't been there, it's a reasonably small dive bar with a small stage up front.

As they take the stage, singer Seth Putnam--who is a big dude, and a Jew, if memory... [more]

MeTa post: It's Condiments All The Way Down
So a few years ago, I was staying at a friend's house in Herefordshire, and one afternoon we made sandwiches with some leftover ham. Having never had Coleman's mustard before, I put a tremendous dollop on the bread and spread it all around. Now, this particular jar of mustard was a year or two old and, anyone familiar with the properties of hot mustard stored in a cupboard will tell you that the pungency can decrease greatly over time. So, while I was warned that my sandwich might have been... [more]

You don't have to buy mayo at all. Jarred mayo is about as far from homemade mayo as yellow Froot Loops are from pineapple rings.

I thought the yellow Froot Loops were lemon.

I'm pretty sure all the colors are Froot Loops-flavored. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

MeTa post: Return of the Return of the MeFi Music Challenge
I always meant to participate in a music challenge. Somebody prod me next time, possibly with something sharp. Unless the category is "covers of Norman Lear sitcom themes you dreamed about and then woke your girlfriend up to tell her how sweet it'll be complete with sound effects and dramatic motions," in which case, I'm already done.

Also, I think musical guidelines are a good idea, at least as an option. I think I never participated because the single-word... [more]

Yeah! Perfect.

Wow, I'd never heard that track by cortex. It is fantastic.

A competition that forced all the participants to use old-skool tracker software would be interesting, I think.

Oh man, I have spent more hours working in Scream Tracker and Impulse Tracker than I can possibly count. I don't think I could remember all the neat tricks I used to know, though.

How about a challenge to write a song in the style of a well-known band?

I really like this. I think we've all owned a Weird Al album or two and, if nothing else, his style parodies were usually spot-on. It's something I've done from time-to-time, and it's a lot of fun.

What about AC/DC, though? Every one of their songs is about some combination of booze, broads, and the power of rock, and you'd be hard-pressed (not to mention wrong, and a jerk, to boot) to say that they don't rock.

God, I love AC/DC.

Revisit and re-record the first song you ever wrote.

I don't know if it was necessarily the *first* song I wrote, but a couple years ago, my high school band re-recorded a few of our songs, among which was the first song we'd written together. We were, maybe, 14 or 15 when we wrote it. It was called "Buttfuck Satan." I don't think anybody wants to hear that. I may, however, upload "Jism Omelet," which is, wait for... [more]

MeTa post: Metafilter Music Collaboration #2
That sounds insane. I mean, I'm not gonna say no, but it does sound a little insane. You guys are gonna hate my track of meowing cats.
posted to MetaTalk by uncleozzy at 5:39 AM on April 29, 2008
Oh yeah, why would you print reverb? Unless you've got access to an EMT plate or something, in which case stick it on a separate track. The exception being spring on a guitar or something, when it's part of the "sound."
posted to MetaTalk by uncleozzy at 5:55 AM on April 29, 2008
Oh yeah, I'd definitely like to take a crack at mixing it. (I just took part in a mixing "event" elsewhere on these interwebs, and it was tremendously educational.) Although it'll be a huge job, given that nobody really knows what anybody else has recorded. It still sounds insane. I dig it.

Yeah, as much as organic would be nice, this'd get really messy without a click. Or at least a tone track to line everybody up at beat 1. But a click or percussion bed would be better. An uneven tempo would be okay, but I think some people might have trouble working with it.

So Karlos, what's in this seed track? Percussion? Autoharp? Coffee can full of beans?
posted to MetaTalk by uncleozzy at 8:44 AM on April 29, 2008
Actually, my cats are not very cooperative at meowing on cue. I might have to hang some mics in the kitchen at feeding time. Or, failing that, replace my missing nose whistle and give you all a real treat. Or possibly a chopsticks-on-cookware percussion track.

Also, to the subject of file formats. I don't know how you guys are with FLAC (I haven't tried it, but I hear it's the cat's pajamas), but it ought to reduce the size of the WAVs by half or so losslessly, which... [more]

I've been using mp3 at 128kbps for sharing on e-mail and uploading to MeFiMu with no problems.

Can we please use plain-old WAVs or AIFFs for mixing, though? Pretty please? Passing around low-bitrate MP3s for tracking is fine... good, even. But you really can't mix with them.

Ah, ever the diplomat. "Deliberate." Maybe if we increase rations, we can raise the pace to "moderate" without breaking a wagon wheel.

Yahoo Answers might actually be the worst thing on the web. It infuriates me every time I search the whole of the web for an answer to something. "How do I get rid of cat dandruff?" Marked best answer: "u hav a cat haha ur gay, no taek it to a vetran LOL!" Fuck you, Yahoo.

Do you smell anything right now?
I smell Junior Mints. It is nice.

I used to walk past the factory that made, among other things, Junior Mints every morning on the way to work. I always knew it would be a good day when I smelled Junior Mints as I walked by.

"Answerbag"? Good lord, who thought of that name? Answerbag?

Well, at least they didn't go with their first idea, "Question Quim."

You've got to wonder, though, what would happen if Yahoo Answers were moderated to the extent that AskMe is. Or even half as well. Would everybody just flee, or would the good users (you've got to imagine they exist) hang around, even with the dramatic dropoff in volume? It just seems like such a wasted opportunity to actually help people.

Well, supposedly the JW player is scriptable, but hell if I could get it to work last time I tried. It ought to be possible with a small piece of Javascript that posts back when it starts to play a song and something server-side to receive it, though, no Flash required.
