Ask post: Do your limbs jerk before falling asleep?
Not only do I get them all fairly often, I can will myself into them sometimes, sort of the way you can will a tickle into a sneeze. It has to be there a little, but with focus, you can make them occur & big.

why not simply cut or break them before cooking?

Small datapoint: My Italian-American family does precisely that.

Ask post: Sadly, I'm swimming stupid.
I swim pool races. My first advice, based on what you have said about your swimming and they way so many people look at lap swim is this: take a class or sign up with a Masters Team (if there is one near you that takes beginners--some don't; since you are anon, I can't make any recommendations). Getting someone who knows what they are doing to look at and refine your stoke will make swimming easier and more pleasurable, so you can do it longer and eventually work harder.... [more]

Ask post: Why do female olympic swimmers have the body type they do?
Every study they have done on why swimmers are "fatter" has been inconclusive. If anything, I would guess it is because since that fat doesn't hurt your swimming, people who are more prone to that body type end up in that sport.

Then again, the perception of beefiness has to do with a few things: those suits are so tight that half of what looks like fat is just muscle getting pushed around and swimming gives you big lats and shoulders and triceps, which look... [more]

Ask post: Please reassure us about daycare...
I can definitely throw in as a kid who loved daycare. The only kid of a single mom, I went from three months through junior high after school, with day camp and sleepaway camp all summer. It was awesome. I got to do cool shit. I wasn't bored. I wasn't dependent on my mother's socializing for company. I used to get sad on holidays when I couldn't go.

People who didn't go often worry about spending enough time with their kids or their kids feeling neglected. This comes... [more]

Technically, it is illegal. Practically? Everyone does it, and unless you set the building on fire--well, I have never heard of that happening. Alternative? Electric grill.

Ask post: Designing website mock ups?
I do paper sketches and then use InDesign. But that is because I am stuck on a PC (I might use OmniGraffle otherwise) and I hate the way Visio looks. Plus, having known Quark in my previous life in publishing there was less to learn.

I think, ook, that sets up a false conflict. There are pretty boxes and ugly boxes and you can want pretty boxes without designing or distracting.

Ask post: Leaving New York, Never Easy... Car hire?
If you are going to DC, it makes sense to rent from Jersey. Saves you time and hassle, since it is easier to take a train to Jersey. I would be shocked that if a car would not be cheaper there as well, but I am certainly not a rental expert.

Ask post: Should I confront my friend about their flakiness?
I don't stand for that shit cause it makes me insane: unlike desjardins, intent doesn't interest me. So I am not friends with people who don't come through. That is pretty much your choice. Work around it or let B fade into an acquaintance you just see at big parties.

Ask post: Some nice tennis reading.
I really liked The Rivals by Johnette Howard, which is about Chris Evert and Martina Navritalova's long running rivalry. It also covers the changes in women's tennis in the 70s and 80s.

Ask post: Terms of Endearment
It is definitely a Latin thing; the only blacks I've known to do it are Latin Blacks (eg, Dominicans). In my very Latin neighborhood, strangers call me Mami all the time; usually they are older and very often women. I assume it is cause I am young enough to be their kid and they are nice.

Ask post: There's a freeze up comin' (maybe)
We do ice baths at swim meets to keep our legs fresh day to day. One of my teammates did the research and found that it only has to be down to around 50F, so as long as it is vaguely painful, you should be fine. And yes, it hurts. Here is how we normally do it:

1. Run cold water into the bath high enough to cover your legs completely, but no higher.

2. Add ice. Usually we do 1 or 2 small wastebaskets' worth, so I think a bag of ice from the store... [more]

Ask post: Help my poor cholrine-damaged hair!
Please don't put conditioner in your hair if you don't wear a cap. It makes the pool gross for everyone else. (Likewise, wash off the perfume.) As to a cap, you may really want to reconsider: long term the chlorine will bleach your hair, regardless of color. I have so-dark-brown-it-looks- black hair, and in the back where the cap doesn't cover it is now blonde. I am not sure what you hate about caps, but if it is the way it pulls your hair, look into silicone--much nicer. If it is because you... [more]

Ask post: Why can't Turner be pink?
What paperzach said. It is mocking the assumptions white people make, not black people, and the fact that there is a whole thread of worried white folks explaining why it is racist is hilarious (yes, not all of you are white; plenty of you are). If there is any racism in there it is the whites who are the butt. (Similar to the "hit the floor" elevator joke.) That said, it is not terribly funny.

Ask post: New York City in one post or less
It is very hard to dangle a backpack at ankle level, and either other people will step on it, or you'll trip them with it.

So I keep it on, and if I were a little fatter I would be exactly the same size without any backpack.

The correct answer is to put it between your feet.

Furthermore, if you were fatter, you would know where your whole body was. Fat people don't wack into others; backpackers do... [more]

Ask post: Neil Simon's - The Odd Trio
Regarding the deposit, use this handy New York trick: If it is equal to a month's rent, don't pay the last month and instruct your landlord to use the deposit. I don't know anyone here who has ever attempted to get the money back from their landlord because it is hopeless. Use the upper hand you still have.

Ask post: Subway ride from JFK to Yankee Stadium and back
I suspect the E is much faster than the A. I think the AirTrain ride is longer, but the E to 7th Ave is shorter than taking the A the length of Brooklyn.

Ask post: What determines a road name suffix?
In Queens, there is great meaning to each designation: on the grid, the bigger roads are numbered streets and avenues, but the smaller roads between each are a road, place, court, etc., in a strict order (that I do not recall at this second). This is because originally streets had names, but then they changed it to numbers. Let me tell you, it makes navigation superawesome.

Ask post: How often do you eat out and how much money do you spend on it?
I live alone in a big city and destest cooking so: all breakfasts and lunches are eaten out and 3-5 dinners a week. At home, I usually have mid-range frozen stuff (thank Jeebus for Trader Joe's). So I spend 120-150 a month on groceries (including beer in) and the rest of my income on beer and food out.

Ask post: Help a guy buy a swim suit.
Seriously? As a swimmer, you look more like a douchebag the further you stray from a nice square leg drag suit (or old-school brief, but with your sartorial prejudices that isn't even a question). Going to swim practice (which is what masters is, not a class) in trunks is like a girl showing up to swim laps in a string bikini: you aren't there to look cute; you are there to work out. Suck it up and wear what real swimmers wear or go back to spinning class.... [more]
posted to Ask Metafilter by dame at 3:24 PM on January 20, 2008
One more note: if you get a mesh suit that doesn't come with a lining, you really should get a brief to wear under it.
posted to Ask Metafilter by dame at 3:25 PM on January 20, 2008
Okay, I am sorry: If you swim for a club with swimmers as opposed to being a "lap guy," wear a real suit. If you are a lap swimmer all on your own, only the ex-swimmers will mock you sliently.

It is crowded everywhere (like you want to go to a movie on Friday night? so do 6 million other people) and there is no fucking Target. You have to walk a lot and wait for trains. But the thing is: some people live here for a while and can't take it; some people love it so much that a dirty A train pulling into Howard Beach at 2 am is the most beautiful sight in the world. I would try to scare you into staying home to keep one more renter out of the market, but fuck it, I own: try it out; the... [more]

Oh, also, you can drink at the Brooklyn Brewery, though I would recommend going for an early afternoon tour and drinking the afternoon away, because it does get crowded, with long lines.

Ask post: How often and how hard do I have to work out to maintain my current fitness level?
If you are put off by Crossfit (I kind of am), its principles as above are still the key: Interval training, fast strength sets, mixed-up workouts. At swim practice, we work out the same amount of time per practice, but still get faster and fitter, because we do intervals and different sorts of sets (short swims / short rest; long swims / short rest; paddle work, which is more about strength; etc.). So: intervals and diversity.

Ask post: What's my name?
I think you can do it however you want. If you make the whole thing you last name, that is fine; if you make it your middle name that is fine. Just be consistent.

I will warn you that my hyphenated last name is alphabetized however people feel like it. You just need to get used to telling people to check both spots.

Ask post: How do secularists deal without the comfort of religion?
I don't know if I feel those holes. Maybe I used to, but never as keenly. I do feel as though there is a lot of ritual in my life, and it is there because I put it there. There is a mornings-at-home ritual. There are certain end-of-day rituals. Perhaps you would call them habits, and I would, but they are also rituals that mark my day as much as any bell or service.

As for meaning, I read a lot of sportswriting. No seriously. The kind of stuff that shows up in the Best... [more]

Ask post: what is tomato sauce really made of?
Here is the thing about sauce: it is really personal. I make sauce like I make it because my mom taught me how to make sauce. Making someone else's sauce is anathema, and all these people's strange suggestions are wrong to me, because this is not how we make our sauce. And even if you make it the same, it always tastes slightly different anyway.

Because honestly, my personal taste is kind of peculiar sometimes. I tend to like things much spicier and more... [more]

Ask post: Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?
If you're in the water in SoCal, there are poisonous sea snakes.

I grew up a beach rat and not only have I never seen one, but no one in three generations of my family have. So I wouldn't worry. Nor would I worry about mountain lions; not that they don't eat people (they do), but seriously, they will take you out at the throat before you have a chance to know what's going on if they plan on eating you, so not much to worry about.
