Ask post: Please help me find bike friendly routes from CT to NY and PA.
Awesome, Eideteker. That's exactly what I was looking for with regards to the Nyack, NY trip. I promise pictures, at the very least, from the trip.

No, ObscureReferenceMan, I'm not sure I want to go through NYC. Essentially all of NY and NJ are mysteries to me as a cyclist and I need to get through both states.

You devil, mikepop! This is only tangentially related to the Icycle Challenge. I just found a regular daily ride during my work week. I'll ask at Saabnet if this fails.

jon1270, a roof rack is a bit difficult on a convertible. :-)

Ask post: The horror
You can call Clairol, but their advice will almost certainly be limited to Clairol products and you are unlikely to talk to a practicing colorist or cosmetologist. Worse yet, you may get someone reading from a script, which may or may not result in the best advice for you.

Some basic information: Natural Instincts is a semi-permanent product. When used, it does, in fact, lighten your hair a touch.

If you are in a rush, you can use your regular... [more]

Ask post: Please help me find an affordable route to fashionable pants that fit.
dobbs, I'm open to suggestions, but I am saying that I tend to dress more on the casual side of what I've seen for custom tailoring work.

As for my geographical area, I travel the northeast extensively, so anywhere north of Washington, DC and east of Harrisburg, PA covers my weekly range. I'm open to using one of the online tailors, but have no knowledge or experience of the market.

I'm flexible on price range. I have found a single designer... [more]

Joh and Elsa, one of the things I've been repeatedly told is that taking in pants an inch produces good results. Taking in pants 2 inches produces less good results, but it can be done. Anything more than two inches starts to cause problems. My issue is that I'm taking in approximately four inches on my waist if I get pants that fit my seat. That said, I'll go to my local tailor and get her advice before I spend too much on custom tailored pants.

The answer turned out to be a combination of the advice here, trial and error, and altering my perception of what "fits" means.

For starters, most of the pants I had been trying had a higher rise than was appropriate for my body shape. A mid rise or a low rise, depending on the designer, seems to improve things drastically. Wearing the pants lower on my hips also helped.

I also discovered that Kenneth Cole cuts for athletic men. The... [more]

Ask post: Nutrition Tracking Software.
I prefer The Daily Plate to FitDay. Though it certainly has its limitations, finding common foods is exceptionally easy because the database is created by users.

Whatever you use, good luck! At one point Spark People had a large, active community of MeFites. Not sure about these days. I find their website immensely difficult to use.

Ask post: Will a runner with a lower body weight have a lower risk of injury than a heavier person, all other measures of health, fitness, and experience being equal?
Can the heavier runner increase strength, balance, and flexibility training to the stressed areas enough to compensate for the difference in risk of injury or is weight really the determining factor?

Excellent point, ssg. I don't know if I can say definitively that the two can be in equal shape, but let's say they each had the same body fat and proportional amounts of muscle. If they were each 15% body fat, the difference in the amount of fat would be:(180 * .15) -... [more]

Ask post: Please help me learn to run.
I am, in fact, training to be able to compete in sprint and, hopefully, olympic length triathlons next season. Furthermore, I have no problems with completing either length, in terms of stamina. My times aren't back-of-the-pack, even when I walk, but a 40 minute 5k run time does not make me happy. Currently, I bike and swim, in addition to my walking, a total of six days a week. Thus far, crosstraining has not helped with my ability to run.

Can you walk barefoot on a treadmill?

Do any of the footwear suited for barefoot training run in wide widths? I absolutely cannot wear Nike shoes because of their width. Not only do I experience pain wearing Nike shoes, but they tend to last thirty to sixty days before the sidewall fails.

Thanks again, schroedinger.

I just did a little walking experiment. I discovered that my walking shoe works by forcing a heal-toe walk. This allows the New Balance Roll Bar to correct the over pronation.

I also noticed that my regular walking stride (w/ shoes) is quite long and powerful while my fast walk stride (w/ shoes) is quite short and fast. Then I tried walking without shoes and found I naturally walk with a more ball-heal-ball, shorter... [more]

Some of you might not call it running, but I am ecstatic to report that I ran intervals for an hour tonight without shoes. That's a 4 mph walk and a 4.5 mph jog. No shin pain, no hip flexor pain, not even a dent in my HR (maxed out at 134). The realization that, "I can run" was pretty incredible. I'll repeat this drill every other day for at least a week to see how my body adjusts and then begin to increase my speed very slowly (less than ten percent a week, as... [more]

Ask post: Please help me find a place to live temporarily in Austin, TX.
rolypolyman, I'm not opposed to living in a downtown environment. For a point of reference, when I lived in Boston I lived across the street from Fenway Park and loved it. Regarding my desire not to be in the heart of UT, I simply meant I don't want to live in housing primarily composed of students unless it's a quiet neighborhood. In the various college towns I've lived in, this generally means living close to, but not directly adjacent to campus.

Excellent suggestion, Argyle. We had considered the camping option, but since most of our intended stops will be in major cities, we were worried about camping options. Ask post: Do so-called 'upconverting' DVD players upconvert 480p to 720/1080 over component cables?
Should I just have stuck with my old player? In all likelihood, the answer to this question is no. Older DVD players generally sent compressed analog signals over composite cables. Even if your older DVD player had component cables, it likely supported a maximum resolution that is lower than what your HDTV supports and the signal was limited by the source material. Furthermore, this feature often required going into the setup of the DVD player working properly over component.... [more]

Am I dumb expecting this analog source to be upconverted? No, you and your wife are not dumb. HDTVs are excellent at doing one thing: displaying high definition signals. They are generally deplorable at displaying analog signals, which is pretty much what everything going into the TV is other than the few HD channels you get via cable.
