MeTa post: May Cycling Challenge and 10km Streak
I'm going to second OmniWise on the run challenge. That's just begging for some injuries. Why not most runs of 5k (3.1 miles) between May 1 and August 31?

notsnot, I hope you're going to have a not insignificant number of active recovery runs and rides. I'll be a bit sad if you get injured. You're a bit of a role model. I hope to follow in your footsteps once I am cleared to run.

MeTa post: Central Vermont Meetup to Welcome ThePinkSuperhero and Stynxno
Hrm. The last time I knew TPS was in town, I bailed while on the way. I still owe her a beer, so maybe I'll actually make this one!

Would anyone familiar with the area care to comment on this planned route to the meetup? Strangely, I am already in VT for the weekend and would be cycling to the meetup. Also, can anyone suggest an inexpensive hotel for Saturday night on my proposed route or in the area of the meetup?

Mark me as a definite. I am coming up from Suffield, CT and can give rides from most anywhere. I'm a teetotaler and spent much of my time in the Pioneer Valley, thus making me a super reliable designated driver who won't get entirely lost! Contact me via the email in my profile if you are interested in a ride.

I just finished uploading 300 mb of photos. I didn't finish editing everything, adding tags, or even properly identifying most people, but feel free to check them out.

Yay! A Boston area meetup that I'll be around for. Count me in. My vote is for keeping it simple for dinner and eating at the Middle East.

MeTa post: Try it, see what happens
I agree that a lot of relationship questions can be distilled down into one or two ur-questionsPerhaps this is off-topic. I certainly don't disagree with this statement, even as someone who is probably more guilty than most of asking RelationshipFilter questions. However if what you propose is true then why is there not a simple flow chart of questions that can answer most relationship questions? I ask in earnest, regardless of the fact that such an invaluable resource... [more]

MeTa post: October running & walking challenges
Congratulations on the new arrival, middleclasstool!

I've created Metafilter Burns v1.0 for the month of October. The challenge is who can burn the most calories in 31 days. No device is required, so you can count calories expended any way you want.

I'm also giving the distance challenges a rest for a bit while I focus on preparing to run a half marathon in under 2 hours.

MeTa post: Labels
In Spanish, americanos literally refers to "people from the Americas" and estadounidense, derived from Estados Unidos de América, specifically refers to "people from the United States". In other words, americanos does not literally translate to American as it is commonly accepted to mean in American and British English.

And there's a perfect example of... [more]

MeTa post: Your single monthly running challenge post
For what it's worth, the pace requirement is ridiculous either way you split it. If it's a 4 minute mile, no one from any of the previous Nike+ challenges will actually be able to participate. "The current world record in the mile is 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco on July 7, 1999. The current women’s record is 4:12.56 by Svetlana Masterkova of Russia, set on August 14, 1996."

If it's a 4 mile per hour pace requirement, I'm afraid you've set the... [more]

MeTa post: Cycling challenge, end of week 1
I'd really like to see the the running and cycling challenges run on We Endure, or a site like We Endure. Perhaps I'm a bit jaded by my Nike+ experience that turned a 50+ mile lead in the July running challenge into withdrawing*, but I liked competing with y'all.

May I also suggest we run concurrent monthly challenges for time and distance? I am reasonably sure, and yes, this is a challenge, I can walk further than a vast majority of runners,... [more]

MeTa post: New stuff on MeFi.
Odd style related bug: the close window link in the youtubery is in the same Metafilter blue as the background for me. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.2 with the plain theme.

Not really a problem now that I know where it is, but I spent a few minutes dumbfounded that no one else seemed to notice that there was no way to close it. So I moused around until I saw the hover.

Alternately, I could up the questions per page to 100 up from 50, to ensure that an entire day fits on the front page, but that would tend to promote more questions, wouldn't it?Why not just always show the last 24 hours of questions? Hitting "older questions" goes back 24 hours. Hitting "newer questions" goes forward 24 hours. You could make the RSS feed for the last 24 hours as well.

How out of touch do you have to be to think that cool teenagers of any race listen to Jurrasic 5, Blackalicious, Portishead, Handsome Boy and The Roots? 1997 called.Let me help you out here. Jurassic 5 released a single in 1995, and an EP in 1997. Despite critical acclaim, they languished in relative obscurity and struggled to sell records until, well, after 1997. But the point you've missed is that none of these backback and trip hop acts are cool among teenagers who are into non-chart music in 2007I disagree entirely, but don't feel like it would be productive to argue the point. My anecdotal evidence says otherwise. Yes, I know a bunch of teenagers who are into bands that probably qualify in your taxonomy of the world as "teenagers who are into non-chart music in 2007". "Dropping outta college to cover our mounting debt while the financee fiddles" sounds bad, hence the response from people.
What's your source for that quote, because it doesn't even remotely resemble what I stated:
As a result of this problem, I've dropped out of college to pursue more clients to stem the tide of debt that we started to accumulate. 1

A large portion of the advice in that thread can be summed up by saying that if you look at this quote from the eyes of someone (maybe almost anyone) who's not close to the relationshipI had to check my own writing to be certain I hadn't written something even more ridiculous than I had actually written. I'm okay with being paraphrased, but I'm was not okay with the paraphrasing not even remotely resembling reality. I tried to salvage the question from my own error, but it... [more]
