The end of Rice-Boy

The end of Rice-Boy. T.O.E, Angel Eye, Calbash (alas we hardly knew ye) and Rice-Boy have ended their adventure. 2 years 1 month and two weeks after the start. Evan Dahm produced one of the most engaging and beautiful webcomics over the past two years and it has concluded. A moment of silence......... Ok now, the good news. Rice-Boy is done, but further Overside stories are likely. YAY.

Council for soldiers?

This is a 3rd party question and as such I am looking more for general information than specific help. It has to do with the military's policy on being gay while serving.

NOT a deletion complaint

I favourited a comment in AskMe that was later deleted. I'm NOT writing this to complain about the deletion, for while I may not agree with it I can understand why it was removed, however the comment was long enough so I can not read all (most) of it on my favorites page and I kind of would like to be able to reread it as I thought it was fairly well written.

Navel wars

Why was showing an exposed female navel considered so taboo in Hollywood films and television shows (and I suppose in culture-in-general), especially in light that cleavage was allowed?

10 (11) interesting/historical recordings. From List Universe. This site uses the term "Top ten" but as with anything when you talk in absolutes people get pretty ornery, so lets just say here are 11 very interesting sound files, from exorcism to castrato.

photography from the source

Sue Carpenter is a photo journalist from the United Kingdom. She has been working with abused and neglected girls in Nepal teaching them photography skills in an effort to give them an expressive voice. Here are 12 examples that will be included in an upcoming exhibit. Related to this, on a wider scope is the notion that the overwhelming majority of photos from developing countries are taken by outsiders, i.e. Americans and Europeans. Dubbed development pornography (SFW) this is perhaps to be somewhat expected because of the levels of income differences. However, there are emerging efforts to address this disparity. Included globally is Majority World and Kijijivision. Regionally - Pathshala, South Asia. Specifically - Out of Focus, Bangladesh.

For want of effort.

Is it worth flagging AskMe questions that seem to have been asked without any attempt by the user to answer the question? They may contain a "legitimate" question, but the user has clearly failed to make the effort prior to posting. I'm asking not in reaction to a specific post, although there was one recently, but just to know if it's worth the effort, and would such questions be likely to be removed?

Unlike the Oscars, this nomination means squat

Nobel Peace Prize nomination database 1901-1955: In general the Nobel Peace Prize Committee does not reveal the nominations for the prize, and they ask the nominators not to do so as well. However, Rush Limbaugh continues the illustrious nomination of people with questionable merit, including Benito Mussolini(1935), Stalin (1945, '48), and you know who else was nominated? Yeah, that's right, Hitler (1945).

In the Jobs section: it would be nice if closing dates for jobs was a field to be filled in and displayed within the post. Barring that, this is a request for job posters to not post something if the closing date is the very next day, as was the first posting in this post (imo, even a weeks notice is difficult, but that's more debatable). This applies especially if you have to dig to find the information.

70 years, Sept 24th 2006

Happy Birthday Jim. Today, Sunday the 24th 2006 would have been Jim Henson's 70th Birthday. (and is the 46th birthday of current Kermit Muppitter Steve Whitmire) Rarely has one person had such a impact with their vision for the world. From Sam and Friends, Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, The Dark Crystal, and on and on and on. Lots of Muppets on Youtube, lots of muppets on Metafilter. Henson died on May 16th 1990 of pneumonia. A Boy and his Frog (mp3) Happy Birthday, and thanks.

black smokers

Hydrothermal vents: More detail on how they are formed. These vents are also known as Black Smokers, undersea hydrothermal vents which contain a mixture of ground water and water that has previously disolved in magma. The water emmited by these vents can be as hot as 400C. The minerals and bacteria found in this water support life in rather extream conditions. They are known to occur in places from from 30 meters to 3,600 meters. Some feel this offers hope of finding life on other planets as there is speculation there are, or where vents on Mars and Jupiter's Europa(bottom of page). Eye Candy: [1][2][3]

White and gooey... no, not Barry Manilow

Consider the Marshmallow, and it’s offspring the Peep. The marshmallow is said to have originated in Egypt as honey-based candy flavored and thickened with the sap of the root of the Marsh-Mallow plant. Recently marshmallow have caused not one, but two deaths by suffocation from playing Chubby Bunny. Clearly this is retaliation from the bunny-like Peep, for the atrocities committed upon them in the name of research and narrative! Will we resort to, guns to solve the struggle? Or just give in and continue our primative and snooty and cutsey and basic way of flaming, making and eating the confectionary?

fire fire

The Cavity Lake Fire: On July 14th of this year a lightning strike in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (previous posts) started a wildfire that has so far burned over 30,000 acres, the biggest fire in the area since 1894. A large reason for the size of this fire is the 1999 blowdown of 400,000 acres of forests, that's 600 square miles of dead wood waiting to burn. Short video of firefighters creating a buffer zone, blogger's pics and comments on the aftermath in an area that was just reopened. Five photo galleries of related images: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5. This is my favorite pic to date, that is the smoke plume from this fire.
