Crime in Cambodia
Cambodia is this ridiculously beautiful, peaceful, caught-in-time country. It's also heartbreaking to see the level of violence that continues on a day-to-day basis; whether it's through landmines, refusal to try any of the extant Khmer Rouge, poverty, globalisation, AIDS, or one of the more legible forms of overt internal violence, there is an uneasiness not far beneath the surface.
I asked a driver once how he could live in a village, knowing which men were former... [more]

We Had to Kill Our Patients.
In the midst of it all, I seem to remember hearing about a makeshift morgue at the airport in New Orleans. The doctors and nurses were putting those who were still in the midst of dying in the morgue so they could have peace and quiet in their final moments. I think the coverage was first on Oprah but was picked up by the news stations. What a horrible situation, with the workers on the ground trying to do their very best to give their explosion of patients... [more]

A movie about the deaf, but not for the deaf
When did the rear window captioning come into popularity? In college, I used to interpret films for a friend of mine. We'd usually die laughing at an inopportune moment because I'd use the totally wrong sign for a word, which resulted in a translation that either made no sense at all, remote sense (and he knew my signing faults, so could follow anyway), weird sense, crazy sense, or sick sense. If it was somehow comically charged (usually in a sexual sense, since I was new to ASL and didn't know... [more]

So sweet so cold so fair
Bourbon Blues on the street, loose and complete,
under skies all smokey-blue-green.
I can't forsake a Dixie dead shake,
so we danced the sidewalk clean..
My memory is muddy,
what's this river that I'm in?..
New Orleans is Sinking Man,
and I don't wanna swim....

j-dub, look up! This is the one time my encyclopedic knowledge/obsession with them has come in even remotely handy. I think my neighbours are getting annoyed...

Horse trading North of the border
The best part about this whole thing was yesterday's press conference with the PM and the press gallery in Ottawa. He was saying that the crossing had nothing to do with Thursday's vote, and the press gallery started cracking up rather loudly. He told them to quiet down (I'm paraphrasing here) and that it wasn't about politics, it was about morals or something to that effect. They continued to crack up. Best clip I've heard on the radio in ages. The more unfortunate aspect about this is how a... [more]

nkyad writes: fionab writes "calling her a whore among other lame names." One of the linked articles has an undetermined man calling her a "political harlot". That's still quite sexist, but a little better than plain old "whore".
Well, she was a called a political harlot, another said that she was prostituting herself for political power, another that she was whoring herself out, and yet another "a dipstick - an... [more]

The kid probably saw her mom pricking herself to test blood sugar levels. At that age, who hasn't tried to copy the adults around them? And yeah, blood sisters/brothers was a pretty common moment. Expulsion isn't exactly the way to go here; it's a teaching moment for the entire school, not the way to kick the kid out. AMWKE are you the person that does the ledes for 20/20?

I see some Atom Egoyan in there too. This recent Guardian article is interesting, and mentions that commentators like to bring up the fact that his father was a psychoanalyst. Also, this article is about the set and teams for the photographs. Does anyone have a login for Artprice? I'd love to know roughly how much they are going for - here is a list of past and upcoming auctions, but you need a login to access info.... [more]

Jeff Wall, a Canadian artist who makes massive lightbox photos, has a similar aesthetic. Some are staged, like his envisioning of Invisible Man, others are more like suburban landscapes.

But I've heard President Bush describe his record. His record doesn't match his record.
"You're doing theater when you should be doing debate. What you do is partisan hackery." .... "I thought you were going to be funny. C'mon be funny...Is this really Jon Stewart?" "It's someone who watches your show and can't take it anymore." He's relentless until the end. Fantastic.

MTV pipes up with a quick article: "While the audience seemed to be behind Stewart, Begala and Carlson were both taken aback. The hosts tried to feed Stewart set-up lines hoping to draw him into a more light-hearted shtick, but Stewart stayed on point and hammered away at the show, the hosts, and the state of political journalism. [channeling from outside world] Jacob says: I wanted to pass on a recommendation for a book that also shows people how to build their own camera cranes and dollies, for those looking for something even fancier. I haven't bought it myself, but it comes highly recommended. [/channeling]
