It's on Angelfire, so I knew it was going to be good. It's got a very thorough table with Brain Area / Bioelectric Resonance Frequency / Information Induced Through Modulation. Also, a huge list of resources and 'further resources.' There goes the rest of my Tuesday.

I think it could be rephrased as, "Does a new member have to post in threads (respond to other posts) before being able to ask a question him/herself?" Kind of like training wheels or getting the feet wet before the big dip.
I think the answer is no -- they can post a question before giving any comments, but I'm not sure.

People were hardly attacking anonymous for being vegetarian. They were picking up on the fact that anonymous's response to the situation at hand - namely, "he eats meat? at McDs?" - doesn't seem like a decent or kind place to start with this man who has a serious and health-related addiction/disorder/issue. It seemed like it was such an important and deal-breaker issue for her - most were saying that it was simply not the best fight to pick out of all the options at the moment, and... [more]

Usually I'd totally agree. But the thread is ABOUT the reaction of the audience. Seems clear to me that a reaction has to do with the content of the film. If you don't want to know the content, seems difficult to talk about the reaction. Thus, don't click on a thread about a film you've never seen and don't want spoiled.
As for the other films mentioned, sure. Those are random spoilers that have nothing to do with the original topic.

Damn it, I lived by the Montrose station for most of the summer. I miss Brooklyn, but I don't miss the L. That train is the biggest pain in the arse (especially living on the other side of the track-work in the summer...).

The best thing about the Montrose station (which may be the 4th grubbiest in the system) is that it beeps when a train is about to arrive. There's a different sound for each direction. Does it do that in all of the L stations? I lost count how many times we sat there waiting for freakin EVAR for that thing, as the tiles sweated out the exhaust and the drunk guy peed onto the tracks. Good times, good times. It could take about 30 minutes from there to 8th Ave. or, on my favorite trip, it took 1.5... [more]

Hey brundlefly. I'm glad it worked out for you. And, this is a little reminder that we still have funds for those who could use it (and more promised, should we have a need). If you were directly affected by Katrina (or Rita, for that matter) or are hosting someone, please let us know. We would love to help you get back on your feet. I've emailed dozens of people in that area, but the db isn't set up for zip code search, so it's been a slow job after the inital rush of members with... [more]

Yeah, the relationship threads - while at times repetitive - also have some total gems in them. People answering have a bit more distance from the poster than his/her friends, and sometimes see/say things that seem obvious from afar but get mired in complications up close. Also, not all friends have been through specific situations, so branching out for advice can be a pretty useful thing - the threads you listed aren't the same question.
Reading some of the responses... [more]

Let me use this forum to remind folks that we have some dough left in the MeFi hurricane fund. If there are members that could use a little help from the area, let me know. It's hard searching for folks in the database, so let us know if you're in need.

Yes, justgary. Part of our interest is in helping MeFi members who were directly affected, and partly in helping MeFi members who are taking on responsibility and cost in aiding others. As soon as you know more, email me with the details: if you could use specific items (bedding, clothing, toiletries whatever), or if you could use some financial assistance, let us know. If you are in the area and could use a specific tool to help you rebuild or get others out, let us know.... [more]

OK, we've found some MeFites hosting (many) displaced people from Katrina. We could use some help with bedding, towels, clothing donations. We are helping with food and utilities from the general fund, which is now around $1000 but with promised gifts will be around $2000. Please let me know if you have some bedding, towels or unused toiletries that you can send their way.

Ok, there are also kids involved, so we could use backpacks, school supplies, kids' clothing, the works. Let me know if that is a specific interest that you can jump on - everyone's picking one small aspect, which is fantastic and makes a little go a loooong way. The responses from everyone have been amazing. "Yes, I could use a little help, but please make sure others are taken care of too. We have a tent, food and credit cards, which is more than many others in this situation." So... [more]

Thanks Vidiot. I had run out of posts here for a few more days, so he was nice enough to post it for us. The DropCash fund is indeed live. It provides a bit more transparency than me simply connecting money on my own. BUT, if you do not use PayPal, as I listed above, please post in the comments on the DropCash site how much you are sending me, and if you like your username so I can keep track of you. You can send me a cheque or cash (well wrapped) and I will include that in the final amount.... [more]

Yeah, I wasn't aware of that particular case, but I do know that it can be a problem. However, when I posted that first thread, I was open to other forms of collecting, but didn't see an alternate source. Nobody emailed me to suggest another way, or to caution me on not doing this at all. I hadn't seen the Something Awful debacle.
Since we likely won't collect in the order of that magnitude, and are using a DropCash procedure, I think it will work out okay. In the... [more]

It's not a requirement. There are any number of ways to do this, this was the only way I knew, nobody suggested another way, and I'm totally open to other suggestions. Here are the ideas as I see them now:
1) Use the PayPal mechanism through DropCash
2) Send me a cheque, money order, cash, or a gift... [more]

Is there a disadvantage to using Amazon's Honor System? They take 2.9% of the total payment per transaction plus $0.30. Could be a good alternative. I've setup an account there and could make that available.

Matt, is there an easy way for you to get the emails of people listed in particular zip codes? Doing this by hand would take a long time, and isn't entirely obvious (find a person in that zip, find people near them, cross-check lists?). The following zip codes are listed as those in the area: 369, 393, 394, 395, 396, 700, 701 and 704. Those are (obviously) prefixes, so the last two numbers are wildcards. If you could email me the email addresses that are associated with their account, it would... [more]

We're a bit lower than I thought we'd be at this point, but there is a little glitch in the PayPal side of things (it seems to be okay now), and we just got posted to the sidebar on the front page. However, if you know a MeFi member who would be likely to donate and hasn't yet done so, please let them know that it's live. Thanks!

If you are a member, hosting people (especially other MeFites) affected by the hurricane, email me.
If you know people on here that even live in the affected areas, please post them here or email me directly.

As I said in the DropCash thing, it was a problem with my account. It was entirely my fault and is fixed now. It's because I was verified in Canada but not the US, etc., but is all totally normal now. The amount posted is the amount donated. I apologise for the trouble.

What do we think about creating some kind of fund...
It sounds like ColdChef (and Vidiot?) and others are down there and in the thick of things. I'm sure many of us have donated to Red Cross or other humanitarian relief groups. BUT, one of the things that makes MetaFilter special is the community - perhaps we can put this community to good use. I don't know the financial situation of anyone involved in this, but perhaps we can have a) someone set up a Drop Cash fund and b) someone down there to use it wisely. Yeah, you're right of course, that there are many members down there, and how to be fair, etc. How about this: we email the people listed in that area to ask if they need a little financial help to get them through the next little while. Those that respond in the affirmative can be put on the [could be private] list. The pot gets divided amongst them, or something like that.
I think my suggestion at the moment would be a DropCash fund. Those that can't/don't use PayPal,... [more]

These are the zipcodes with alterations to postal service due to Katrina. That would be a start. These are the three-number prefixes for the worst damaged post offices/districts, which might not be the same but is a good guess:
365-366 Mobile, AL.
369, 393 Meridian, MS.
394 Hattiesburg, MS.
395 Gulfport, MS.
396 McComb, MS.
