Another potentially huge settlement day for CDS contracts ...
Honestly, if someone was financially prudent over the past decade, beyond not being able to get a boost on their credit card limit what are they going to suffer? Obviously, if they work in the financial industry they might lose their job. But guess what? That happens to people every day. It's a part of life.
Yes, and wide-ranging economic collapses are a part of life as well. To think that the credit crisis is going to be confined to the financial... [more]

I think the fundamental assumption concerning the credit cards is that we will be entering a period of deflationary pressures, ie the money that you borrowed now won't be worth as much "stuff" as it is in the future. Basically you might be borrowing a $1 today and be paying back the equivalent of $.80 or something like that.
The value of a dollar goes up with price deflation. In a deflationary scenario, borrowing dollars today would mean... [more]

Why are multi-hundred-million dollar annual salaries necessary?
Well, only yours and mine are. And mine is due to a rounding error, by several decimals.
But shhhh! I won't tell if you won't!

God, those "yes on prop 8" commercials are some of the most vile, misleading, homophobic and disgusting political ads that I've ever seen. I'm ashamed to live in the same state as these people.

Canary in the coal mine...
Be honest. How many people here secretly want the market to fall to some ridiculously low level just to see it happen?
I would have preferred to have just bundled the last several trading sessions into one huge selloff and taken a week off. But watching our clients' 401(k)s, IRAs and pension plans get destroyed while the market deleverages is not my idea of entertainment. It's sickening, quite literally.
Interestingly, we... [more]

Today's volatility in the DJIA after the vote was like nothing I've seen before. On a volatile day, you might see the average move several points with one tick. But today, there were 10- to 50-point jumps from one tick to the next, moving in either direction. You can't even see the volatility on the 1-minute charts; they look orderly in comparison to what was happening on my screen. Crazy.

US Bailout bill, TARP, and economists' and journalists' reactions
Actually, let me put it even more strongly: I would rather let the economy burn than pay for one single golden parachute.
Well, that's something, I guess. The financial equivalent of "kill them all and let God sort them out." It's really hard to fight with such a reasoned, nuanced viewpoint, so I won't bother.

I'm hesitant to post this, because I know how foolish one can look when warning of a disaster that may or may not come to pass (in fact, it would be irresponsible to create undue concern). But I'm fortunate enough to work with people who understand the intricacies the credit markets far better than I could ever hope to, and I've been lucky enough to hear their take on this over the past 18 months. Everything they've talked about for the past 18 months is either coming true or already has.... [more]

Yeah, what the fuck was that? On any other day, that probably would have been the top business story, but everyone was busy watching FNM and FRE collapse while the market soared. When they discussed this on NPR yesterday the legal expert said there there is almost no way to recover money from decisions based on bad reports in news articles. News orgs make mistakes, we all know that. You are responsible for judging information for yourself.
Yeah, after digging around a bit, I'll happily recant that part of my rambling. Here is a ruling that addresses most of the issues, and the shareholders don't appear to have much recourse.... [more]

Kind of like Corel Painter, but without the crashing
It dies without a message box, without an error message, without making a sound, it just suddenly destroys all its windows, discards any open files, and thus unadorned folds up and flees the mortal coil. It looks very much like the window has minimized, but it won't be found on the taskbar or in Task Manager.
That's almost....beautiful.

O Pan! Io Pan!
Strange Angel is another great book about the life of Parsons.
I've long been fascinated by his rather tragic tale, especially with the parallels between his own story and that of John Dee, with L. Ron playing the role of Edward Kelley. When I first began my research, there were no biographies yet released, and I was considering writing one myself, but ran into rather stiff resistance from Helen Smith among others. Still, this... R.A. Wilson created his own version of events in Cosmic Trigger, even attributing the founding of CalTech in part to Parsons, which is wildly incorrect.

I just read that last link...Marilyn Manson thinks Parsons was responsible for the atomic bomb? And that the objective of the Babalon Working was to bring about the end of the world? I've always given him credit for being reasonably intelligent, but nearly everything that he asserts about Parsons is wrong.
(For those who have read that link and are trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, it is true that Parsons was a disciple of Crowley's, but Crowley was... [more]

Oh, my apologies for not knowing you had a deep personal relationship to Parson's brain function. It must be my guiltless patriarchal attitude.
Hmm...I'm not sure what provokes your hostility. But if you can point me to anything in Parsons' writing that displays the nihilistic ambition of literal world destruction attributed to him by MM, please do so. Otherwise, I'll continue to maintain that Manson is full of shit.

It's ironic to watch people cling so desperately to the ability to take for free that which they turn around and proclaim "valueless."
If I see a penny lying in the street, I won't waste the effort to pick it up. And I won't bother defending my so-called "right" to do so when someone asks me to just leave it there.

One of my favorite concert memories is from seeing the Cocteau Twins in Hollywood back in '85. After they had played their full set, the crowd naturally wanted an encore, for which they were not the slightest bit prepared. Flustered, Robin rewound the reel-to-reel which had their drum tracks, and they played a couple of songs from the yet-to-be-released Tiny Dynamine again.
