MeTa post: Facts do not respect majority opinion.
Cthulhu f'taghn

I've always wondered if the emphasis should be placed on the "f't" or the "agh."

Then I wonder if I even want to pronounce it properly.
posted to MetaTalk by malocchio at 7:13 AM on May 30, 2008
It's pronounced "Bill Smith", believe it or not.

Aha! That probably explains all the strange, amphibian sounds coming from the old Smith house. Good to know.

And even if you do manage to pronounce it correctly, locusts fly out of your mouth and the sun turns black.

And therein lies my apprehension...though it would be pretty cool to watch it happen to someone else.

(I used to have a friend, may he rest peacefully, who was fascinated by Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant, and the whole Typhonian current. His greatest ambition: to unleash a plague of locusts upon the earth. One... [more]

heh, adamdschneider...I should mention that the friend lived at least 500 miles away, so shenanigans were out of the question. It has all the makings for a hell of a prank, though!

DA - fair point. I'm a genuine skeptic by nature, but the thought that he could have pulled this off through mundane means is almost more impressive to me than any mystical mumbo-jumbo I could imagine. Poor Bart was far too destitute, bi-polar, and out of his mind on trazodone or whatever he was on at the time to pull off a stunt like that, even though that is clearly the most likely scenario. But you really would have had to know him to believe that, so a good healthy dose of skepticism is... [more]

The OP said here I'll go first and gave several answers.

Which is an excellent definition of chatfilter. I wonder where we all saw it?

Here, I'll go first. At MetaTalk.

Goddamn. If it was that easy for me to evoke the chthonic entities, I'd be at home muttering passages from the Goetia right now.

MeTa post: Or do I have to be in the cabal?
Oddly enough, my dry cleaner has autographed pictures of porn stars on the wall. I've long suspected some sort of conflux between the two industries.
posted to MetaTalk by malocchio at 6:29 AM on May 20, 2008
Well, I always assumed that the porn stars were the people doing the autographing, just as I also assumed that the dry cleaner was the person doing the cleaning.

I could be horribly mistaken about any of this.

MeTa post: We'll all need lobotomies to keep from shouting "Don't do it!"
To me, it kind of seems like taking steroids for an athlete (if it could be proven to be efficacious at all). Would one really want to be the Roger Clemens of the meditation world?

No, I think lobotomies have no place in the world of competitive meditation.

Well, it's still a little early, but I think spring is definitely here.

MeTa post: We Came, We Saw, We Recorded
My absolute favorite part of this year's challenge was collaborating on a song with another RPM participant from halfway across the world (Finland!) She has a simply amazing voice which you can hear on My Voice in Her Heart, a beautifully haunting song that sounds a bit like a cross between Dead Can Dance and Yann Thiersen.

I'm pretty happy with the rest of the entry, though I think it pales in comparison to our collaborative effort (which is hopefully just the first... [more]

It is important for a project I am working on to know which of you are from the mongrel races.

I think they do that over in Arizona, but here in California, it's strictly about the ponies. And it looks like this one broke down before even reaching the gate.

Really? No dog racing in Ca?

Nope. There are only a handful of states that still allow it.

Oh yeah, it's that whole exclusion thing again. Wow, this stuff is harder than it looks, but I meant no offense.

My other thought was "anything laminated," but that's probably just me.

MeTa post: link requests, askmefi
This thread reminds me of a thought puzzle I came across long ago...

You awaken in a room with a window and a door. There is a desk in the corner, and an office chair that is missing one wheel. The window is open, but sealed off by bricks. There is an electrical outlet near the desk, but the walls are otherwise bare. You try the door, which is naturally locked. A 60-watt bulb illuminates the scene from the ceiling. You can reach the light bulb by balancing... [more]

MeTa post: Mefi Musicians... up for a challenge?
The front page of the contest states: "You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website."

So that non-transference/redemption clause is a little strange in this context. I think what they are trying to say is that the winner can't ask for cash instead of the "rights" prize. (Nor could the winner ask for rights to a different song, or for... [more]

I'm late to the game, but I think there is an easier way to visualize this than the rollerskate analogy.

Let's take a Hot Wheels car and place it on conveyor belt. Turn the conveyor belt on, and the car moves along with the belt. Now if we hold the car steady against the belt, the wheels spin, and the car now has momentum relative to the conveyor. I can keep turning up the speed on that belt, and continue to hold the car in place (relative to everything but the... [more]

This whole mess has me playing Madden '06 again (I don't really care enough to buy a newer version.) I think the real-life Falcons should do what I've been doing, make him scramble on every down; hoping for either a career-ending or life-threatening injury with every play.

Unfortunately, he's averaging about 450 rushing yards and six TD's per game. But damn, it feels so good on those sacks where he doesn't get back up!

This happens to Music posts as well...I've found mp3s that I have uploaded only to Metafilter on various music aggregators. I don't think that's a big deal, and neither is this. I certainly wouldn't blame Matt for sending a C&D, but unless they have deep pockets it's not worth much of a fuss.

Jessamyn, I'm not quite sure if they are hosting the files or just leaching bandwidth from Metafilter; I'd probably have to guess the latter, which makes it a bigger deal than I first thought. I'll send you a link to one of them (actually, it is the only one I can find today, these things seem to spring up then disappear.)

Here in the US? Absolutely. State after state has enacted anti-gay-marriage legislation, and only a handful of states have been able to buck the trend. I think it's well past the time that all people of good conscience take a stand against anti-gay bigotry.

This really was a lot of fun. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out...I've been describing it as an unholy combination of Coil, Massive Attack, and Yann Tiersen.

I would have liked to have done a lot more guitar work and maybe take a stab at some vocals, but I don't think I ever would have been satisfied, and would have become too bogged down to complete the challenge.

And I swear, that 10-minute experimental track at the end of... [more]
