MeFi post: Maybe Rap Really is the Poetry of Our Time...
"Soulja Boy Tell Em", like much hip hop music, is not about the lyrics so much as it is about the beat and the flow.

Hip-hop in the current mainstream has been heavily influenced by the southern styles in recent years. The "crunk" style is largely repetitive dance music. Like techno, like disco, like a lot of funk. I had never heard the original before this, but in the intro he says he is basically advertising a new dance. Yknow,... [more]

I am against any criticism of the family guy in that it might encourage Fox to renew its contract.

MeFi post: Listen...... ....yeah?
A friend of mine just finshed the job of remastering the whole collection of shut up little man (he worked with Eddie Lee Sausage for several years). A full compilation should soon be available on CD. Sorry, no more info beyond that.

MeFi post: Opiate of the masses
Calling religion a drug is an insult to drugs everywhere. Religion is more like the placebo of the masses.

Worth logging back in just to make a non-remark!

This site has a few articles on the history of the beat generation, though it mostly revolves around Neal Cassady. [Note: Quasi-self link.]

MeFi post: Jon Stewart on cspan
rxrfrx: Wrong. He is quite up front about bush being a bad president. The difference is that he is NOT a democrat, nor does he give the democrats a "free pass" the way Dennis Miller did with Bush.

OK, his interviews with high ranking politicians are often soft, and he didnt ask Kerry the "tough questions". But he didnt claim to. He was equally soft on Richard Perle when he was on plugging his book on "winning the war on terror".... [more]

MeFi post: The Good Boy

I get more than a little irritated, when I hear whites cheering Cosby on. Nothing wrong with agreeing with his options, but keep it to yourself. It's not our place. It's not constructive.

Absolutely not. This attitude is segragationist and wrong. We all live in a society, if one particular, sector of society is not working than society itself isnt working. It is indeed very difficult to discuss issues of race without automatically pushing... [more]

The effect of race is very subtle, lkc. While nobody may be handing out passes to you on the basis of your skin color, it does subtly effect how the world interacts with you. This is certainly no reflection of how you interact with the world, but how it choses to see you.

I understand that. Part of the point was that I came from an almost exclusively white background. In that sense, I dont think race was really an issue in my early... [more]

journalism : the final resting place for assholes with nothing to say.

Biting my tongue.

I like pitchfork, even though I dont listen to any of the stuff that they seem to live and die by, like Radiohead. But I read it and other review sites just like I read reviews for movies. I already know what I like, but I like to see other peoples opinions on things. And their reviews for crap is usually pretty funny.

MeFi post: Meet the New Walkman
I have an iRiver iHP and it does everything I want. Namely: no DRM, upgradeable firmware, can record wav and mp3 through an internal mic or an external analog/optical connection. It is USB 2, which is apparently a little slower, but not enough to bother me. It does not require any drivers or software, just a USB capable computer. It works under any operating system (except my friends mac where he had disabled all his USB extensions). Great sound quality, long battery life. Plus, it isnt made by... [more]

MeFi post: That's what Dave Chappelle had to say to a...
I think chapelles show is great, but there are points where he falls back on character gimmicks, or gets the pacing off, especially in the first season, but very admirable for having such limited resources, as has been pointed out before, he gets passed the "black people walk like this, white people walk like this" (though sometimes not too far). His musical segments can be hit or miss, and there is sometimes a sense of trying to pad out the episode, with the clips in the audience,... [more]

T r a c y:
Absolutely. I was going to make a comment earlier to the tune that, while USA today is the fluffiest and most obvious "news"-paper in the U.S., the fact that they are reporting stories like this goes to show how obvious the psychological problems of Japan are becoming.

Gender is one issue, and admittedly a huge one (i could go on for hours, actually), but even the lonely planet guidebook describes their culture as being "morbidly... [more]

stav: yeah ok, fair enough. Also, stuff like that is why people become the expats in the first place, right? Cultural perspective and all. From what I have heard of Korea and Taiwan (from an admittedly small sample size) much of the same happens: all white guys look like brad pitt or tom cruise, friends of yours will still complement you on your amazing chopstick skills after they have known you for years, and some old men dress like rappers with an admirable obliviousness. Oh its fine, absolutely no offense taken. There are good things here, and there are reasons that I have been here as long as I have, certainly. Ultimately, I think its some of the difficulties japan is having in progressing that is what makes it so appealing to foreigners, who I generally find more objectionable than the japanese, who are usually at least polite.
Back on topic though: I dont think living with your parents your whole life is really -- as any measure of social progress... [more]

Yes, but originally was on eclipse for the first 10 or 11 issues, then moved to the marvel subsidiary epic (or do i have those backwards) where it got to 100 issues before moving to dark horse. I have everything up until then, but that was when the indies were having a gimmick/price war with the big-guns, part of what caused the industry to crash.

For the record: Michael Winslow rules. In fact, I just watched Buy and Cell (called 'Money Academy' in japan, to play up the fact that he was in police academy), it has quite possibly the greatest 80s cast: Michael Winslow and Robert Carradine (davids brother AKA the head nerd from revenge of the nerds) Rowdy roddie piper, the biker guy from raising arizona, and Malcolm McDowell as a prison warden...if only it had Curtis Armstrong.

OK, so maybe its not that good, and... [more]

MeFi post: Beatallica!
Since much of the lyrics seem to be original, its more of a stylistic tribute, musically to metallica, and lyrically to the beatles, though I am not intimately familiar with either.

Though given how litigious Metallica has proven to be, and the protection of the perpetual cash-crop of the beatles is in the best interest of the publishers, you never know...
