MeTa post: Ask the Moral Compass
ikkyu2 is one of the most intelligent, well-loved members of Metafilter (which on a site this large is really saying something).

Nobody's saying he's stupid, but he sure can be a dick sometimes. On this one, I'm with the fish lady.

OK, I admit I've been curious about this. If people still have extras, I'd like one!

MeTa post: Photograph this!
That thread was useless without pictures.

Agreed.

From zadcat's final follow-up, it's clear that she doesn't want an actual answer:"...I don't want to enter into complicated discussions of my motives or the would-be photographer's motives. I would like the preference to be as simple and unremarkable as preferring coffee to tea."And I'd like a million dollars, but you don't see me starting some trainwreck of a thread on AskMe about how it sucks that I'm poor.... MeTa post: Jessamyn in the NY Times
Well, thank god that's over. Now we can finally get back to the real point of this thread: discussing which one of the hot librarians is the hottest.

I nominate the little number in the yellow sundress and platform sandals -- who's with me?

MeTa post: Fearless Leader on Consumerist
So, while we're talking about the iPhone, is it really true that you can only delete one email at a time? Because that would drive me totally insane.

MeTa post: My Friend's Dull Blog
I've recently been told by an admin that posting about a friend's site is not OK.

As punishment, I suggest we boil him and that flash interface in oil.

MeTa post: I don't buy it
1. The license story is really suspicious. Most people would get a new license, though it's possible that she doesn't care to or they live in a state that doesn't allow it.

2. When people lose that much weight, it is immediately obvious when you see them naked. As in, there's big, loose folds of skin, or there's scars from the removal of the skin (example). Unless he's blind, there is absolutely no way he would not have noticed.

As to why I... [more]

Also, you realize that you're suggesting that most people would brave the lines and the "customer service" at the DMV unnecessarily?

I think that if their license photo showed them at 200 pounds more than their current weight, they absolutely would. You seem to have a different opinion, which is fine, but which doesn't change the fact that this question sucks a donkey's balls on multiple levels.
posted to MetaTalk by myeviltwin at 1:19 PM on June 4, 2007
What I'm trying to say is the expectation that of course any reasonable person would get a new drivers license after losing 200 pounds comes off as one of the more shallow things I've read in a while.

It comes as a direct consequence of once having had a license picture that looked noticeably different from my current appearance, and CONSTANTLY getting comments about it. It was seriously annoying, and had I not lived across the country from the issuing... [more]

MeTa post: Please improve the coherence, for the kids
It seems I'm always late to these parties, but I have to admit that I found the AJAX tabs at the top of the page to be dreadfully confusing at first; it's not at all clear that they are meant to provide a filtered view of the page, and also the labels overlap confusingly with other functionality ("My Comments" means something different in that context, for example). So, how about we ditch the tabs and just have a drop-down menu to filter posts? I made a mock-up of what I'm talking... [more]

...actually, I guess they're not AJAX, not that it matters one way or another.

At least a presentation-level separation between one's favorited posts and comments, yeah?

That seems like a good idea.

The trick would be finding some reasonable classification system to make it possible to quickly and usefully quantify the sample.

MeTa post: New UI feature: resizable textareas
While the cross-browser issues get figured out, why not set the non-resizeable comment box to be a more reasonable percentage of the page width (say, 50%)?

Works great using FF2 on Mac OS 10.4, btw.
posted to MetaTalk by myeviltwin at 5:36 AM on April 13, 2007

I guess if I could work out the CSS bugs in the Opera and IE7 browsers, I could make this an optional UI element in your preferences.

That would be AWESOME.

MeTa post: Functional, clear design & intuitive systems would improve MetaFilter
Hey, so I realize I'm late to this party, but:

I found the new post page to be awfully confusing at first, mainly because I didn't realize that the "Link URL" and "Link Title" boxes were just there to help people who didn't know HTML. So while I would have been perfectly happy to just type some HTML into a box, instead I first had to figure out which of four different boxes were required and what would end up where. So, how would people feel about... [more]

Yeah, I don't know...clearly Smilla has no problem taking this creep to school, and it's a pity to lose her well-written retort. On the other, the original comment just leaves such a bad taste in my mouth that my personal preference would be to delete it from the thread.

Maybe copy the exchange here, thus preserving it for posterity, and then nuke the originals?

On preview...I guess whatever happens the originals are getting nuked.

posted to MetaTalk by myeviltwin at 12:12 PM on April 7, 2007
Yeah, listen, I don't think this is rocket science.

Most reasonably attractive women have to deal with creepy come-ons of the "So...got a boyfriend?" variety on a semi-regular basis. At best, these interactions are awkward or annoying. At worst, they can be frightening, when the guy won't take no for an answer or gets angry that "bitch is too stuck up to talk to me."

(Incidentally, bruce's comment, which sparked this whole... [more]

hincandenza: I respectfully suggest that you ask some actual women about the kinds of unwanted advances they typically encounter. You may be inclined to revise your theory afterward.
posted to MetaTalk by myeviltwin at 11:38 AM on April 8, 2007
The smaller circle of "seriously, that's stalker-creepy and psychotic" unwanted advances is so obviously something no one should have to deal with, it wasn't worthy of including in the discussion. But I think- hope?- it's a fairly small percentage of guys who are doing that, and only an occasional experience for most women

I am suggesting that talking to an actual woman (or, hell, just reading the responses from jessamyn, smilla, and others... [more]
