Fountain pens and climate change, two great tastes that go well together

Why is Mont Blanc's height so stable? The pen company has been marking 4810 on their nibs since at least the 1930s. Just this year, it measured 4810m tall.

Shaken, not Stirred?

Seismologists: how likely is a major Pacific Northwest earthquake? The Canadian Geological Survey seems to think a big quake is likely. The Pacific Geoscience Center thinks the probability went up, but is still very low.

This post about James Kim and family was not very carefully constructed, but some of the comments rescue it. Most of the rest of the comments debate whether the item is newsworthy or not, and need to be deleted. Coments about the post should go in this thread.

Hasn't the Gulf Coast suffered enough? The fact that this is an anonymous post suggests that some MeFi admin thinks it is reasonable to forcibly send a troublesome kid off to some "volunteer" rebuilding program. I suppose if you wanted to harm the rebuilding process, this might be a reasonable approach.

How did this post get through?

Things that don't go boom

Need a power source for your electric car? Be careful building a nuclear power plant in your back yard, or you could be the center of the next suburban superfund cleanup.
And it is perhaps best that he does not work on the ship's eight reactors, for EPA scientists worry that his previous exposure to radioactivity may have greatly cut short his life. All the radioactive materials he experimented with can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact and then deposit in the bones and organs, where they can cause a host of ailments, including cancer.

Are there any consumer-grade virtual city products...

Are there any consumer-grade virtual city products out there? Back in '92 or '94, it seemed obvious that an impossibly costly but "killer" internet app would be a click-to-nav 3D city, built out of photographs of an actual city. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Katamari Damacy demonstrate that it could be done if you subset the city properly and keep the models simple enough. Has anyone done this at the retail leve, or research level?

MacFilter: How do you make the screen fonts bigger...

MacFilter: How do you make the screen fonts bigger in OS X? I've just upgraded my grandmother from a virus-infested WinME box to a 17" iMac G5. Unfortunately, the text is much too small for her to read clearly, and she wants her WinMe box back. I've changed the resolution down to 1024x768. Other than seriously degrading the image quality, it doesn't make the fonts much larger.

I'm comfortable working with the command line and editing plists, so don't hold anything back.

Does anyone make an expandable, portable stereo...

Does anyone make an expandable, portable stereo digital music recorder? Several hard-disk MP3 players now support voice recording in mono. Korg has a cool little four-track recorder that unfortunately uses SmartMedia (128MB limit). This would be for a musician who likes to record every gig, but can't afford to hire a professional to mic every instrument. At the moment, he uses a consumer-grade minidisc recorder and a high quality stereo mic.
