Can I post something I tested to Projects?

A friend developed a new Firefox extension. While I didn't write any code for it, I was one of the testers during development and like to think that my input has helped the product. Is this okay to post to Projects?

Full disclosure

A few weeks ago, there was a post about two Muslims about to be deported from Britain. Today in AskMe, the poster reveals that one of the potential deportees is a friend of his. Shouldn't this have been disclosed at the time? Is it okay to make posts about your friends?

E-mail to Twitter

Can I set up a mailbox that will forward incoming mail as a Twitter direct message? There are several services that will change your Twitter status based on an e-mail. This is not what I want. I shouldn't have to provide my Twitter password either as it is unnecessary for sending direct messages.

User comment dumps

Many of us have spent quite a bit of time writing our various comments and posts on MetaFilter. In the spirit of "All posts are © their original authors," I would like to request the ability for a user to be able to download all of their own contributions as a simple data dump.

What should I discuss before agreeing to a postdoc?

I've been interviewing for bioinformatics postdoctoral positions in the U.S. and will soon be discussing the details of taking a position. Do you have suggestions over things I should discuss with my prospective mentor or research on my own before agreeing to the job?

Should I vote in the primary at home or abroad?

I currently live overseas but am registered to vote in Texas. If I want to help Obama's campaign the most, should I vote in the 4 March Texas primary, or the 12 February Democrats Abroad primary?

Trying to put the genie back in the bottle

Chicago adds a 5-cent-per-bottle tax on bottled water. Will this reduce bottled water consumption?

Science, Evolution, and Creationism

The National Academies release their new book Science, Evolution, and Creationism, targeted at the public, which summarizes the "scientific understanding of evolution and its importance in the science classroom." Download the 89-page book free in PDF format (you will be asked for your e-mail address, location, and employment sector first). Other resources on evolution from the National Academies, including other free online books (previously on MetaFilter). There's a brief NYT story about it as well.

How should I get connected in the U.S. again?

I'm probably moving back to the U.S. in August or September. I'm visiting this week and again in late March/early April. I already have a UK tri-band GSM phone. What should I do to get mobile phone coverage in the U.S.?

How do I keep my keys from chewing through my trousers?

How do I keep my keys from chewing through my trousers? The threadbare spot on one pair has developed into a hole. This is probably related to the fact that it's where I place my keys in my front pockets.

UCLAPD taser investigation

UCLA releases the results of an independent investigation into an incident where a UCLAPD officer repeatedly tasered a passively resisting student (previously on MetaFilter). The investigation found that the officer violated UCLA's use of force policies. Furthermore, it found that these policies are "unduly permissive" and that "the UCLAPD policy stands alone in its legitimization of the Taser as a pain compliance device against passive resisters." An internal investigation by UCLAPD previously determined that there was no violation.

RSS feeds in Google searches

The new RSS feeds (which are wonderful) are starting to show up in Google searches. I doubt this is what anyone wants. I would suggest that they be disallowed in robots.txt, or set NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW.

Big Wheel Keeps on Turning

Ferris wheels making a comeback. Wheels across the world, past, present, and future, big and small. Graphic comparing various wheels. The London Eye. The Singapore Flyer. A triple Ferris Wheel that closed 10 years ago. And George Washington Gale Ferris's 1893 wheel that started it all.

Review patents from the privacy of your own home!

Peer to Patent goes live. First mentioned on MetaFilter almost two years ago, this project allows open review of patent applications, so that members of the public can better inform patent examiners of prior art. Discussed more on the project blog. This experimental system is part of efforts to improve patent application review. (thanks to ubiquity)

My National Security Letter Gag Order

My National Security Letter Gag Order "Under the threat of criminal prosecution, I must hide all aspects of my involvement in the case -- including the mere fact that I received an NSL -- from my colleagues, my family and my friends. When I meet with my attorneys I cannot tell my girlfriend where I am going or where I have been. I hide any papers related to the case in a place where she will not look. When clients and friends ask me whether I am the one challenging the constitutionality of the NSL statute, I have no choice but to look them in the eye and lie."

Rising Bollard Revue

Rising bollards in the middle of the road are becoming more used in the UK to physically enforce traffic restrictions, such as roads open only to buses and taxis. But some drivers in Manchester think the law doesn't apply to them. See what happens when they try to tailgate behind authorized vehicles. Also, see a video of what happens when a loaded lorry is rammed into an anti-terrorist rising bollard at full speed.
