Customer service is a privilege, not a right...

But water is a fundamental human right. Anyway, most of the English people I know seem to have no problem asking for some tap water at a restaurant or even a pub.

Toilet itself was originally a euphemism. Bathroom itself is not really considered a euphemism today in America. In U.S. English, a toilet is not a room.

I don't think so. All y'all is a double plural, it indicates some group of people larger than the group that would be referred to by y'all.

"The message we're trying to send today is the criminal justice system works," Harris County District Attorney Kenneth Magidson told reporters at the courthouse.

FAIL.

I can't remember ever seeing such a big FAIL.

It's really okay to discuss how you think posts could be made better in general without it becoming a guideline or enforced by moderator fiat.

MeTa post: One is feets, the other is boots?
The car-booting post would be a great post if the description were accurate. But it's not.

As far as I can tell, they didn't "go off the deep end, booting nearly everyone's car in the community," the media did not "[become] involved" and we did not "become witness to a business owner suiciding his own business."

MeTa post: Don't ask me!!
I agree that for more serious situations, such as people accused of a crime, or people in situations where thousands of dollars or more are at stake, getting real paid-for advice from an attorney is essential, and I think providing legal information in such cases is counterproductive.

On the other hand, there are more minor disputes where the cost of a lawyer could easily be more than what you stand to lose by not having one. In these cases, I think it is helpful for the... [more]

How do you know how "minor" the dispute is?

Sometimes some common sense is warranted. Yes, I know, we're talking about the law, and that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with common sense, but it's not really cost-effective for people to consult a lawyer when they want to do things like terminate their mobile phone contract, or get Dell to fix their broken laptop, or try to get their landlord to return the $100 they withheld from... Why the obsession with not having MetaTalk threads as long as possible? If you don't like reading MetaTalk threads, maybe you shouldn't read MetaTalk.

MeTa post: Full disclosure
Oh, my own personal answer to the first question is "Yes, definitely." I don't know as much about the second. Although if it had been disclosed at the time, the post might have been deleted, which may explain why it was not.

gjc: I can understand why people wouldn't want the whole world to know their answer to a sex question. But I don't see why, when that is the case, they are willing to have the whole world know they answered it. A subtle distinction, perhaps.

I thought polls were not allowed as questions. If the question really meant to ask how each individual MeFite pronounced the word, then it should have been deleted.

MeTa post: Stinking of gin...
Instead I've discovered that the lot of you are an unusually priggish and judgmental bunch, eager to dispense ad hominem personal attacks on the basis of mere presumptions of my character, educational standing, or even—most offensively—financial background and social class.

That's your presumption if you're going to judge an entire community of thousands of users based on the reaction of the few dozen who felt like weighing in there.

Kindergarten teacher is a much more difficult and important profession than dude who checks in every now and then to see how your research is coming along.

Ridiculous. The "dude who checks in every now and then" on my research is one of only a few dozen people on the planet who would be competent to do so.
posted to MetaTalk by grouse at 9:21 AM on May 28, 2008
I think it's more difficult too. The vast majority of people would not be capable of doing it even with training. Certainly it would be far fewer than the number of kindergarten teachers. That's more than just scarcity.

As for importance, I'd rather not bash other people's professions as being unimportant. To be honest, I think the world needs both science professors and kindergarten teachers, and would be a worse place if we lacked either.

It's not about the conversation; it's about the links.

That doesn't mean that it's okay to shit in the conversation. It means that a crappy link should not stay just because of the discussion it inspires.

MeTa post: Thread deleted, missing or imagined?
Good point, stavros. I think of the "removed at poster's request" as a courtesy, and I think that in many cases it's fair for it to not be totally removed. After all, the poster caused others to put their efforts in answering the question, and they certainly didn't request the deletion. Perhaps this should be made clear in the FAQ.

That said, in cases where the post can cause imminent harm to the poster, and many of the answerers are saying "get this... [more]
