Ask post: Bass Gospel Vocalist?
Aha, after searching kxjz's website for "Eric Alatorre" I found the interview I was looking for!

In an interview for the program "insight" he cites Isaac Freeman as someone he likes.

Man, that dude has a very low voice.

Thanks - I haven't listened to his stuff yet, but this reader (judging from the linked stuff above and the article at reason magazine) is also supposed to be pretty good.

Ask post: Where are more Bay Area Parcourses?
I know that there's at least a station at Lake Merritt in Oakland on Grand Avenue near the freeway overpass. I don't know if it's a whole course or not. (Can't think of where other stations might be, I haven't seen any others around the lake.)

I've also seen a station in fairfield, near (what I think was) the West Texas freeway entrance on the N/W side of the freeway.

Not sure if either/both of these are isolated stations or part of real... [more]

Oakland, by Lake Merritt. Yikes. I must have been making some pretty pitiful uncoherent sounding noises because my wife kept trying to calm me down.

There's that first five seconds or so, where you don't know if something really heavy is going to fall on top of you or not, that as a California transplant of about 8 years I still can't get used to.

Ask post: Do I need to buy a keychain breathalyzer or can I trust myself?
Have a look at Nolo's book on what to do if you get pulled over. (Search inside on Amazon.) Sleazily enough it's called "Beat your ticket." However, the book has a good explanation of how DUI tickets/stops work. Interesting reading that will hopefully prevent anyone from ever getting on the road with even the slightest suspicion that they might be impaired.

Ask post: somewhere other than the hot & muggy mid atlantic.
I like the Ukiah suggestion. It might be hard finding a job, but if you go there, or even up as far north as Eureka, the costs are definitely going to be lower than anywhere south of about Point Reyes. You can try craiglistto see what apartment costs are like.

The problem with "off the beaten path that don't cost an arm and a leg" is going to be getting work yourselves. (Arm and a leg are relative.) Oakland costs a lot of money because there are a lot of jobs... [more]

Ask post: L'Oreille Cassée
Jare,

I guess I'm asking about both Bolivia in general and Sucre. Given my point of arrival (La Paz) I will likely visit salar de uyuni, potosi, and possibly cochabamba. (Maybe yungas
road?)

I also have a friend who will be in Arica, Chile and its possible that we may meet up somewhere, either in Sucre or possibly somewhere in between.

Travelling around is one of the big question marks. Good bus lines?... [more]

Ask post: How would you protect your assets transparently going into merriage.
Get a book on marital property in Canada if you're just curious. (Maybe this one, no idea if its any good or not.) This is too complex a question to really deal with here.

In general, basic community property principles (US: Cal and other states) seem pretty fair in my opinion. Very roughly: If you earn it while married it gets split 50/50 between the two of you at divorce, if you had already, it's your seperate property. The court will have latitude to make adjustments... Ask post: Framing Papercuts?
Hmmm...looking around the web (yeah I know, I did this once to no avail - my keywords just seemed to work better this morning) it looks like what I need is some u-shaped came, some solder, and maybe some hanger dohickeys like the 'handy hanger' (an eyebolt looking thing that the frame hangs from.)

Still - any comments from folks w/experience doing this and specific recommendations for what sorts of tools I'll need and/or directions to good web tutorials will be much appreciated.

Ask post: Recommend the perfect cookbook
Bittman's great - but don't use his gravy recipe (or at least not the one with cornstarch - blech). Why get rid of good cookbooks? I guess I could survive on a desert island with Bittman's book and a well stocked pantry - but give up Marcella Hazan? Give up Joy? Give up Fannie Farmer? No thanks! I wouldn't even want to give up the weird old Larousse.

I don't know where you live, but the many of the investigators at a bay area government agency specializing in death penalty defense started of working desk jobs at the agency. I believe there is a track at this agency whereby you assist in information processing/organization with the agency for a year or so and then can move on to investigation if you want to.

The investigators at this office do a TON of background research on each death penalty case they are assigned.... [more]

I would walk, and have done so many times. (My wife also works in the baddest bit of the tenderloin and has for a few years. She occassionally comes home late and has never had a problem. Seen some unsavory stuff sure, but no real safety issues.) If the two of you are together, you aren't likely to have many problems. More along the lines of people sleeping where you want to be walking or drunk people walking back from a show at GAMH!

No, he paid his dues. These kinds of reporting requirements are wrong and should be themselves banned. (IE: the same way we disallow questions about, race/ethnicity/sexual orientation/etc as de facto discriminatory.)

Yeah, the underwater rock trick is a pretty good one. My grandparent's had a Jack Russel and he would do the same thing Ironmouth described. Okay, so the creek was only two feet deep in our case. But I'm sure the rock - in proportion to little stubby - was much larger.

Yeah, I know I cheated and put in a picture of a diamond mine. A pit's a pit as far as I know though. Living in Northern California I've had a chance to go to the malakoff diggings up in the sierra. Popular Ethics wins the prize for most informative response so far. (Does that mean that I won the prize for most misleading response?)

Wikipedia in any case discusses oil shale being removed with pit mines, but agrees with P.E. on pit mining not being a feasible option for removal of Canadian tar sands (though the entry for tar sands strangely[?] pictures a pit mine at the top of the entry).
