MeFi post: Jonathan King Sings
Thank you for being the first person in the thread to finally spell his name correctly, unsane. I was going to start shooting.

MeFi post: Non-sucky web typography
I spent a ton of time reading Designing The News, which is completely great, and the huge bold header is really an excellent touch. (And the body type is sans-serif, by the way.)

The rest of this list really seems to be unexciting, though. And what the hell is it with list posts lately? Anyway, read dtn.

MeFi post: Why everything new in finance has already been new at least once before
Mutant, about half of the column inches on this thread are you. I don't even necessarily disagree with you, but you might want to save up some of your words for your own blog, rather than making this your pulpit.

Okay, well, now that I've waded through the swamps of more recent comments, I actually do disagree with a number of the things you've said. The rest still stands though.

So, despite how you've chosen a grand total of three pages from the same blog, this is still a blog link, and it's ... not that great.

MeFi post: Imagine It!
Spotting the words "value" and "add" next to each other anywhere is pretty much a guaranteed sign that the thing in question is going to suck horribly, unless you're teaching kids addition.

MeFi post: The System loves you for your money, not your soul.
MMORPGs are barely RPGs. Roles are not being played; buttons are being clicked and virtual money is being acquired. There's some pretty scenery, but it's basically pointless. People ignore what story there is. It's decoration, like the story in the Diablo series - probably the first successful game that trained people to ignore the pretty things and just click. The story was actually was very interesting, but very few people noticed or remembered it. Pretty much every MMORPG is Diablo with... [more]

Well okay, you're right. And I've heard City of Heroes is a great example of that, though I've never played. There are also a handful of RP-encouraged WoW servers. But the percentage of people RPing (in these beautiful worlds that were at one point, I think, designed for RP) is tiny, tiny, tiny.

People will always carve out their little RP niches, but the games themselves, in both terms of mechanics and how they end up being played by the vast majority, have been... [more]

MeFi post: Cannabis reclassified Class B in UK
Wow, good job Gordon.

Canadian politicians don't seem to have much trouble talking about previous pot indiscretions - I seem to remember something from the last election in a paper about the fact that pretty much every leader was like "well, yeah..."

Despite this, no one moves to decriminalize it. It's glacial. Politics is a broken art.

MeFi post: The story of the Democratic primaries so far, boiled down to seven minutes.
My spider sense indicates he's going to take Indiana, it's 52-48 Clinton right now with 1000 precincts left to report, and the biggest (most urban) precincts report last, which seems to have confused CNN for about six months so far...

And yes, if there's an assassination, at this point, I'll get a gun and join a revolution. And I don't even live there.

The joke is that it doesn't matter who 'wins' with representative delegates..

Yeah, but that's not what they tell you on the tee vee!

I did some poking around, and this blog post (scroll way down until you see indiana maps) is the first place I have ever seen a real breakdown of how delegates are awarded and from where. I wish there was some sort of ... organization... of people... that were there to dig up information... aw... [more]

I've never linked to this site before but uh, Drudge Report, of all places, has a big ol' picture of Barack and Michelle on the front page. Underneath it: "THE NOMINEE."

Yep.

MeFi post: Lost and Found, $4 Million Violin
An even funnier variation on this theme: David Hanson leaving the 1 million dollar robot head of Philip K. Dick behind on an airplane... never to be seen again.

"Huh? Yeah, no, I didn't see any robot head of Philip K. Dick. There was some other robot heads but nah not that one. Huh? No, they're pretty busy, we can't really call em up now. Yeah, no, it probably wasn't there anyway."

MeFi post: The Making of The Pentultimate
So, this is neat and all, and very nice, but how the hell do you get all of that material, a computer-guided mill, and enough time to design that and build it? I guess the builder must be at some university somewhere, but damn.

You have no right to ask anyone where they get the time to do anything

That was Clay Shirky, talking about "cognitive surplus". (I don't know who Clay Shirky is, but he sure is pushing that book.)

I was talking about money and materials and opportunity, not just time.

MeFi post: The Rise of the Rest
I think even that is more positive than is justified, considering how the rise - and really is rise the right word? The roaring modern capitalist success, maybe - of various nations seems to be negatively affecting the world food trade, energy supplies and prices, the environment...

MeFi post: wrong, wrong, and terribly wrong.
You don't have to (*SPOILER*) necessarily interpret it as they turned on their cameraman, wendell - you could think of it as they were trying to leave a message for Everyone Else, and spitting on them etc is what they think of them. And then they left the camera & tape on the ground for the police to find. (*END SPOILER*)

Or whatever.

Pretty interesting though anyway, and the music wasn't... [more]

Venetian Snares is usually a sure hit when I want to scare someone with music-as-noise but I can't find something good to link to at the moment to just be "here, this is noise!"

But I want to link to this anyway: Szamar Madar (it's not an official video, it's not perfect, but it references Norman McLaren old school video/animation at the beginning, so that redeems it. It does something retarded in the middle, too. But anyway.)... [more]

MeFi post: Ways of Seeing
Finally got around to watching this, and it is brilliant. I wonder what sort of magical incantations and tectonic shifts would have to happen for me to live in a parallel universe where television was like this now. Or even some website somewhere. I guess Metafilter is all I get - I guess that's okay.

Even though Beverly Kammerer was bawling her eyes out in my office, the lipstick was perfect - she was the kind of dame who would make sure of that before she came over to tell you that her husband was dead. Yeah, it was probably her. But I may as well make a good scene out of it.

The name's Miller. Sam Miller.

MeFi post: Ready from Day One, 2001 Edition
One side of me wanted to forget that I respected the office he held and talk to him as if we were a couple of blacksmiths with a bad bet to settle, but I checked my temper, shook his hand, thanked him for having me in, and walked out.

And there's the other problem. Sure, Cheney is a diabolical psychopath, but ... you gotta respect the office. It's very important. The world will collapse otherwise.

MeFi post: Charting the Uncanny Valley
Why would someone make this?

I get that people would try to make animatronic sleeping dogs. I mean, as a lark, as a one-off thing, as an experiment. "Hey look, I made this animatronic sleeping dog, isn't that freaky? You should hire me for your film/art project/talent show/horror show/cocktail party/whatever!"

What really freaks me out is the people who buy them. And put them places. It freaks me out almost as much... [more]

I find it hard to believe that the endless consumption of internet information is any different from the endless consumption of Seinfeld information. I waste at least as much time these days doing stupid things online as people in the early 90s did with TV. I guess it's nice now that I get to comment, and people occasionally even read what I write ... though they often forget it again by the time they're writing their own comment.

We are absolutely not at the end of a... [more]

Well, okay, now that I actually read the content of the post (*cough* sorry) I think the bushy-tailed excitable sort that put together that powerpoint is most likely barking up the wrong tree. You know, I get that it's really sad that rainforests are being destroyed to get more farmland, but if it comes to a choice between people being fed and preserving rainforests I'd have to go for the first option every time.

This is exactly what the people who clear rainforests are thinking. And it's easy to understand why - which makes it hard to blame them.

It will be easier to blame them when millions of people die in... [more]
