Do a curly-haired person's curly hairs all have the same chirality?

Do a curly-haired person's curly hairs all (or nearly all) have the same chirality (i.e., left-handed coils or right-handed coils)? Does it vary from person to person?

Tally of cycle types in a permutation group

Anyone good with GAP? I've defined a largish permutation group and would like to make a tally of elements by cycle type - how many of each cycle type occurs in the group. Possible? Trivial? Use something else instead? Oh, and where's the right place to ask GAP questions?

Shuffling a pile of papers

I have a moderately-sized pile of papers (say, several dozen) in front of me. What's a quick way of getting them thoroughly shuffled by hand? I am familiar with lots of shuffling algorithms, but they don't work well by hand, and techniques like riffle shuffle that work well with small, stiff cards don't work well with standard sheets of paper.

Sudenmorsian

Sudenmorsian: I'm very interested in finding a recording of this little radio opera by Pylkkänen, or at least a copy of the libretto to read (not the original story of Kallas that it was derived from). I'm nearly convinced no commercial recording exists, but AskMe is sometimes miraculous...

OSX RealPlayer sends audio to internal speaker

Mac Pro, OS X 10.4.10: Why in the hopscotching christ is Real Player (10.1.0) sending audio to the internal speaker? Output is directed to go to the line out in System Preferences, and no other media players or noisemakers fail to do the right thing.

A hilarious but faintly remembered celtic ballad

I'm looking for a song with little to go on: I'm nearly (but not entirely) certain it was sung by Andy Stewart; it's basically a humorous ballad (in the story-telling sense) which ends up with the protagonist making a hasty exit from town, quite possibly chased by men with swords, quite possibly pulling his pants up as he goes, with a genius lyric in there somewhere on the important of learning discretion as the better part of valor.

Bicycling into Charlottesville, VA

Can you recommend me a reasonably bicycle-friendly route into Charlottesville, VA coming from the west (from Lexington, to be precise)? I don't mind sharing a road with traffic - I ride Route 11 frequently and happily - but as much as possible, I would like to avoid getting mixed in with dense commercial traffic.

What's the dryest great circle on Earth?

Which great circle on the Earth has the largest proportion of its length lying on land (not water)?

Pronunciation for Burns's Address to a Haggis

I am called upon, with short notice, to deliver the Address to a Haggis. I know the words, but I want to make it sound as good as possible; can you point me to a pronunciation guide or - better - a credible recording?

OS X Server alias remembers last-used name. Stop it!

OS X: An alias to a server remembers the last user name that was used. Where is that piece of data stored, and can I change it to be blank? (On a public lab computer, I'd rather the dialog comes up empty rather than suggesting the last-used name.)

"I hate humanity and I wouldn't hesitate to kill"

I'm trying to remember a metal song with the lyric "I hate humanity and I wouldn't hesitate to kill." I'd have sworn it was Edge of Sanity, or Carcass, but no dice. Probably mid-90s vintage; almost certainly a growling vocalist; I'm pretty sure this was the opening line.

Out of print Schoenberg CD

Help me find a copy of this out-of-print Schoenberg/Craft CD, issued by Koch in 2000 and apparently vanished into the ether?

Chinese character for "good luck"?

Can anyone steer me to an image of a Chinese character suitable for expressing "Good Luck!" (as in, good luck on your exams)?

Word 2004 makes bad PDF?

Has anyone experienced Word 2004 on OS X generating malformed PDF? I have a friend who constantly has difficulty printing documents (that typically have a lot of equation editor objects in them.)

ut, do, si, ti

Are "ut" and "si" just variants of "do" and "ti", respectively, or is there more to it than that?
