MeTa post: I must really rank
It was deleted because we all know that financial crises are caused by the Jews, not the blacks.

MeTa post: hugs all round
Six or seven amazing posts of his ago, I thanked him in thread for his consistent awesomeness. He sent a MeMail thanking me for the compliment.

So, he's consistently posting great stuff, and he's a courteous fellow. Pretty much the ideal MeFi user. Thanks, Kattullus!

MeTa post: Users and tags and dendrograms, oh my!
Dammit! I only have 24 posts!

Pay close attention to when I do another one so you can run this all over again, ok signal?

Thanks for doing this, it's kinda neat. I'm disappointed to see that its use hasn't taken off like I'd hoped, so I don't have a branch with other users of the "tutsnuts" tag.

Yeah, that's roughly what I do, too, liquorice. Nice to know that it's not unique to me, but common to many blog-reader types.

Hmm... I'd be down for late August brunch, like the 4th or 5th Sunday. But if I'm the world's only person with that view, it doesn't make sense to change things around.

Oh, man, I'd love to go. It would be tight-- I am not entirely sure where I'll be living then, and I might still be far away from there-- but I will make it if at all possible.

MeTa post: What gives?
Wow, that Peggy Noonan column DaShiv linked is blistering and perceptive. Only about 1/10 as great as DaShiv's post, but still well worth reading.
The headline Wednesday on Drudge, from Politico, said, "Republicans Stunned by Loss in Mississippi." It was about the eight-point drubbing the Democrat gave the Republican in the special House election. My first thought was: You have to be stupid to be stunned by that. Second thought: Most party leaders in Washington... [more]

MeTa post: GiveWell
dawson, it was the astroturfing for himself + astroturf bad-mouthing other charities, + setting up an email account bearing the name of a new employee to do further astroturfing.

konolia commented,: "You know, I think maybe you just need to go out and get a real job, then give your own money to a good charity." I think that was well-received because many people felt that the entire GiveWell enterprise may be as concerned with self-promotion and self-regard... [more]

MeTa post: Seriously?
Ever notice how white people conduct themselves in the Balkans, in Nazi Germany, in colonial Congo, in the Jim Crow South, in Pinochet's Chile, in Stalin's Russia?

It's no wonder they couldn't hold onto control in Zimbabwe-- their reputation preceded them, so they were kicked out.

IQ isn't a particularly important number because IQ tests don't measure innate intelligence.

If they did, then Dutch army conscripts in 1952 wouldn't score 30 IQ points lower than conscripts in 1982.

Ascribing political results to group IQ is a little like saying that rich people are rich because they have more money. Well, maybe, but that doesn't really tell us anything about how they got there, or what it might mean for the future. IQ is a... [more]

bigsky,

As I pointed out above, IQ doesn't measure innate ability.

Even if you have inarguably established that black Zimbabweans are worse test-takers than white ones, you have not explained (1) why/how/that low IQ = bad governance; or (2) whether the actual leadership of Zimbabwe is taken from the low-status, low-IQ majority of the black population; or (3) why Zimbabwe would be different from South Africa or Botswana in... MeTa post: Favorites Filter
Those of us without greasemonkey skills can always just search for "favori" to see which comments have been favorited. I guess that doesn't work too well in a thread about favorites, but it'd probably work OK in that Charlton Heston thread.

In general, I don't think this would be a great feature, because favorites are, as Miko et al point out, a pretty uneven indicator of goodness. We don't need to encourage the one-line snark stuff that often messes... [more]

MeTa post: He should have known he would get responces like this from wacked-out liberals.
To what extent can scriptural support be found for this?

The practice of Christianity, like support for a given political party or Grateful Dead fandom, can easily be severed from any underlying principles. It need not happen that way, but it can and does.

It is pretty galling to see the religion founded by Jesus, of all people, used as some sort of paganistic God/country/family totem, but hey, they know not what they do.

MeTa post: why are racist questions allowed on netatalk
PeterMcDermott's comment reminded me of this John Waters interview:

Later, when I showed them in a class I taught at prison during the '80s, the reaction was racially divided. Oddly enough, when I showed Pink Flamingos to my class—and I had a good class, because the warden gave me the smartest and the worst, the smartest people who had done the worst crimes—and every black person left when Divine ate dog shit. I disagree with what people are saying in this thread. I think there are some solid discussions about politics around here. For example, I was glad to get to go back and forth with koeselitz and others in this thread.

We are, unfortunately, living in a politically charged era. Are there really that many places that are better for this kind of discussion than MeFi?

MeTa post: Metafilter Ethos
From the article: It's because our audiences are starting to be as big as those of the mainstream media, and the mainstream media have taught us to be afraid of saying what we really think to those audiences.

The phenomenon of watering things down to reach/placate wider audiences existed even before ARPANET.

I agree with languagehat, macrone. As unfathomable as it is, I think he really does go with the redundant line rather than the sensible one.

John's "Stand By Me" is the moral equivalent of Michael McDonald's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (or, if you like, Elton John's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"). It's a completely superfluous Vegasification of a classic. You'd have thought that John would have been beyond that by that point.
