Is it time for MetaFilter consignment?

I know a MetaFilter swapsite or Craigslist-y thing has been suggested before, but now that I have a thing burning a hole in my pocket that I'd like to give to an interested local Mefite -- like, today -- I'm wondering if it's time. I'd like to sell or give away things to you, and I'd like to buy stuff, too. I'm pretty sure that we could do some really interesting things with this, like what Miko did with her $9 something offer.

What's the hot Java web framework?

I'm starting a new project at work rewriting a web application from scratch. We want to rewrite it in Java for a number of reasons that aren't really important. I've spent the last few months off and on researching web frameworks, but I haven't got a really good handle on how the web-development community feels about them. Help me choose!

AskMe on Cat and Girl

I'm not generally a huge fan of these kinds of posts, but Cat and Girl mentioned AskMe today as part of its is-this-sarcasm-or-double-sarcasm pop culture revue, and my heart filled with glee.

Movies with Mysterious Jews?

My wife (raised Catholic) and I (raised Jewish) were watching The Exorcist the other day, and she turned to me and asked me if there was any movie where Jews were depicted as secretive, mysterious, and spooky. The best I could do was Lenny Meyer and his fellow Hasids in Pi.

Generic dancing class?

I'm a nerdy white boy from the Northeast. I dance like a nerdy white boy from the Northeast. I want to dance like.. well.. I just don't want to embarrass my wife when we're at weddings/parties/clubs. Are there any classes I can take analogous to "conversational" language courses? I really don't want to learn swing or ballroom dancing or anything in particular. (A class somewhere near Boston would be ideal.)

Is December too late to do a North California winery tour?

I'm considering taking a 4-day weekend trip out to California's North Coast to do some winery-hopping and hiking. Is this a mistake? My wife has vacation time the first couple weekends of December. Is it going to be too cold? Are the wineries even open this time of year?

Buying a .org but not the .com

It is a commonly held belief that enough Internet users foolishly expect every Internet domain to end in ".com", it would be a mistake to purchase and promote a domain ending in ".org" unless one can also purchase the corresponding domain in the ".com" TLD to redirect these foolish Internet users to the proper URL. Is there any statistical evidence that there are so many foolish Internet users out that that this is a necessary practice? Or is this merely unsubstantiated myth?

Last weekend of the MLB season

There are three nights left in the 2007 Major League Baseball season. The National League has seven teams within spitting distance of the four playoff spots (five of them could end up with exactly the same record), and we could conceivably see one-game tiebreakers through next Thursday. Those in charge of stadiums, planning TV schedules, managing local hotels, are dealing the best they can with the unclear schedule. Considering also the myriad noteable records set this year, it's hard not to call this the most exciting MLB season ever.

What's the fewest number of pitches pitched in a complete game? How many times has a relieving pitcher been awarded a win without even facing a batter? How many different pitchers has Julio Franco faced? What's the greatest number of hits in a game where all of them are home runs? Who's hit the most grand slams in the ninth or extra innings? These questions and many (many) more at Baseball-reference.com's fantastic Stat of the Day blog.

Off-the-beaten-path things to do near Lewiston, Maine

I'll be spending next week with my wife in the midcoast region of Maine. (Just outside of Lewiston-Auburn.) She has family there, so she has spent plenty of time at all of the touristy things around. What off-the-beaten-path things can I suggest for us, within about an hour of Lewiston?

Hiking map of Baxter State Park and Mt. Katahdin

I'm having trouble finding a decent hiking map of Baxter State Park in Maine, and more specifically the area around Mt. Katahdin. The map on their website is all but useless. I'd like to be able to figure out where the parking lots are and how long and how tough the different trails are. I can't even tell where the peak or the Knife Edge are! I've tried to find books at my local library, but they've all been out. I know there's some decent maps at the visitor center, but it's a 9 hour drive to get there, and I want to plan my hike and figure out which campsite to reserve before I'm on the park grounds.

Name this electronica/dance song's artist

Please name the artist who made this mystery electronica/dance song. I pulled it off of ageispolis's fantastic MeFiSwap mix, but sadly, he only knows the name: "The Hand". I don't know if it's the mystery of it, but it's my favorite track among a lot of great tracks. And I want to hear more, but Googling is is essentially impossible since there are no lyrics. According to his liner notes, he ripped it from a friend's vinyl. (Link to downsampled MP3 inside.)

If you dupe a deleted post, does it make a sound?

One is deleted because it has no link. The other is deleted because it's a dupe of the first. But can you dupe a deleted thread? Can you dupe a thread that has no link? Or is this just capitalist revisionism?

Vegetarian collard greens

I want to make delicious collard greens, but I want them to be healthy and vegetarian (so, no pork fat). I've tried a couple recipes I found online, but the results have been uninspiring (and the greens didn't strike me as nearly tender enough, even after an hour of boiling). Any advice? Any recipes?

Ficlets are extremely short stories (a maximum of 1024 characters). Other writers swoop in and write prequels and sequels to your ficlet, making interesting branching narratives a la Create Your Own Adventure.

There's someone with the same name on Netscape.com's digg-esque site who does the same thing, and one on StumbleUpon, too. And that's not all. Am I being paranoid? Is this even worth frowning on, as long as they're all decent posts?

He's becoming the Human Baton, and with the help of dozens of internet strangers, he's started his trip cross-country. They're each putting a pin on his jacket, posting photos, and blogging it. Oh, and they're planning meetups with him all through his route.

What do Greek speakers call dinosaurs? Do they use the same Greek-derived words that English speakers do ("dinosaur", "tyrannosaurus", "stegosaurus", etc)? Do these names sound as silly to them as calling those extinct animals "terrible lizards", "tyrant lizards", and "roof lizards" would to us?

Fritz Haber

Fritz Haber's story is the story of the double edged sword of science. He won the Nobel prize in 1918 for his groundbreaking work in breaking the nitrogen cycle for Germany's WWI efforts, but it's been estimated that two out of every five people now living would not have been born if it weren't for artificial fertilizers created using his process. He also spent much of the war developing poison gases; first chlorine (after watching its first use, Haber's wife committed suicide) and later Zyklon B (the cyanide insecticide later used against his fellow Jews in concentration camps). He died alone and in poverty in Switzerland. But the lessons of his life haven't quite been forgotten.

Cheap travel from Estapona to Gibraltar or Algeciras

What is the cheapest way for me to get from Estapona (Spain) to Gibraltar or Algeciras? The closest train stop would be in Malaga, which is even farther in the wrong direction. I don't have a European driver's license, so it appears that I won't be able to rent a car. Bus? Taxi? Are those going to be outrageously expensive? My Spanish is quite bad; should I even consider hitchhiking?

Why is the opening at the front of men's briefs still there if it's rarely used?

UnderpantsFilter: What is the opening at the front of briefs (and boxer breifs) for? Okay, I know what it's for, but does anyone actually use it? It seems far more trouble to manipulate than pulling the front of your pants down four inches. If no one uses it, why is it still there? It seems to add extra fabric and stitching that cost-reductionism would have eliminated long ago. Is it simple industry momentum? Does it add something to the comfort I don't see?
